As you know, I’m a big fan of this Focus summer release, which puts a neat mainstream spin on progressive sexual politics, and boasts Julianne Moore’s best performance in eight years to boot. It’s interesting (and, I think, appropriate) to see this trailer putting the film’s comedic properties front-and-center rather than going for the highbrow Oscar grab — some viewers might find themselves surprised by how artful and moving it is. It hits screens on July 7; read my Berlin review here.

I am surprised that ruffalo impressed me the most,i wonder how the 2 ladies will be campaigned they are both definitely lead from this trailer and i would assume mia is supporting.
Ruffalo is terrific, too — no weak links in this ensemble.
I sense the lead/support campaign issue is going to be a tedious topic of conversation for months. They’re both leads. Period.
Ruffalo seems to be back in YOU CAN COUNT ON ME mode. I’m very pleased, can’t wait.
Sweet merciful crap I NEED to see this! Julianne Moore and Annette Bening both need Oscars!
wow I didn’t really need to be convinced based on your berlin reviews and what I heard from sundance but this trailer put even more validation to the claims that this looks to be an enjoyably brilliant film. I can’t wait! I would love to see both actresses be nominated, but I’d prefer if they both won!
Alright. I’m sold.
I’m in.
@mark,
They could both be campaigned as leads.
It’s worked before (Thelma & Louise)
This looks like Ruffalo’s movie.
So far, even though I do not want to, I found Annette Bening performance more radical than Moore´s but that can be just a first look perception.
On the other hand I am surprised or at least I was not expecting to that much comedy, or at least so they are selling it that way, I guess.
Julian Moore is one of my favorite actresses and this film was on the top of my 2010 list since late last year, however , this advance seems to tell me (beside the date of Release), that its not flawless.
wow I can’t wait for this. Probably already a certain SAG ensemble nominee and 3 or 4 oscar nods for acting.
cineJAB: Easy, tiger!
Guy, I’m going to London with my mum next weekend to celebrate her birthday. I’de love to see you (because London is tiny :p). If you’re going to Lou Reed’s concert, come and say hello :)
Sorry to be the party pooper, but I hated this trailer. You sure about this one Guy?
I’m sold. I’ve been anticipating this one, and the trailer got me. Looks like a must see in my opinion.
Wait, WHAT?!?! Chad disagrees with the general consensus??
Actually, Chad is braver than me. I didn’t like the trailer either. I didn’t think it promised a great film.
Nevertheless, I still hope I’ll love the film.
looks like fun, nothing earth shattering but funny and romantic
Chad: I’m sure, but then I’m equally sure that you’d HATE this.
Jim: I’m not going to Lou Reed, I’m afraid. But have a great time in London!
This looks cute.
That movie looks pretty funny, and I can’t wait. I bet it’s this year’s Juno, or Little Miss Sunshine.
As much as I like the look of it and I think it will be good I can’t see this getting more than an Original Screenplay and maybe a Supporting Actress nom for, perhaps, Mia if she’s able to keep up all this breakthrough buzz.
I’m thinking “Mother and Child” is where Annette will make herself known with Oscar. I guess a Best Picture nom is definitely in the equation. I totally forgot about the ten thing for a moment there.
I’m sold on this one. BurmaShave is right, Ruffalo seems back on solid form–it’d be interesting to see where he’ll go from here.
They may both be leads, but I doubt Focus will promote them that way. They perpetuated that Gyllenhaal was supporting in Brokeback Mountain, so I’m guessing Moore will go supporting here while Bening is promoted in lead.
It may not be entirely fair, but same gender leads are almost always split up these days. The days of Thelma & Louise are over, and if Moore and Bening were to both be nominated as Best Actress, they’d split the votes and both lose.
Let the games begin:
The Kids Are Alright for Best Picture.
Annette Bening for BEST ACTRESS
Julianne Moore for Best Supporting Actress
Mark R for Best Supporting Actor
I’m sorry but i agree with Chad i didn’t like the trailer either.

I don’t know where everyone is getting this meme that Annette Bening is the chief beneficiary here. She’s good. Moore is better.
I think it’s simply the fact that she is the top. As bad as it may sound…
Moore’s best performance in 8 years?? Wow, in a comedy, that’s quite surprising. So she is better than in Blindness, Savage Grace, A Single Man and Chloe?
Definitely, yes.
(By the way, it’s a comedy with significant dramatic peaks.)
