‘Metropolis’ at Berlinale

Guy is either en route or settling in at the Berlin fest presently, but I came across this live stream of a screening of Fritz Lang’s original cut of “Metropolis,” happening right now.  Go check it out.  One of my top three films of all time.

Fritz Lang’s “M” is one of my top three films of all time. Can’t wait ’till it comes out on Blu-ray. In the meantime, it’s available on Netflix instant watch.

    I need to see “Metropolis.”

I want to check the new version out when it is released in the US, since I was definitely impressed with Metropolis, but I did not love it (Sunshine: A Song of Two Humans is probably my favorite silent film and one that is my top 10, maybe top 5 of all time).

Some dedicated people in Berlin standing in a park in the cold with snow on the ground to watch a silent film. The crowd seems to have lessened since it started, but still a good size.

Speaking of silent films, I just saw La Roue last weekend. My God, what a revelation. Abel Gance was an incredible filmmaker. Incredible montage editing two years before Potemkin. Anybody who hasn’t seen it should immediately put it in their netflix queue.

Can’t wait to see the new version of Metropolis

I almost bought Metropolis on DVD one day, but it was a pricey $70 dollars and I thought it would be best to spend my money a little more wisely. Thank God I did because it was LITERALLY a week later that it was announced a full copy had been discovered… so I’m waiting until the whole thing gets released on DVD / BluRay. It will be well worth the wait… which might be a while, from what I understand. : (

Also, anyone who leaves “Häxan” of off a “Best Silent Film” list should be punished very, very harshly. (Ahem, mark kratina.)

Regret to say I am not standing in that crowd. Actually, it’s so freezing out there I don’t regret saying that at all.

NEW DVD in APRIL 2010 (i think):

    …kino.com/metropolis

Saw it last night on TV, it was awesome. The new scenes still look scratched though.
The movie feels considerably different from the 2002 version. They also reedited certain parts.
The movie feels darker and more charater driven than the 2002 version.

About 3 scenes are completely new, a lot of the new footage are extensions to the previous footage.

I posted this a while back but it seems not to be published.

Yeah, The Passion of Joan of Arc is pretty amazing too.

I have travelled to my parents especially to see the broadcast last night. It was beautiful! The 2001 restoration was already good, but with the found footage in place, plus the slight rearranging of some scenes, the movie looks so much better. Also the music sounded somewhat more “dark”, but at the same time more “bright”. It all makes more sense to me now.
Let all of us just hope that somewhere, somehow is a more complete and undamaged print laying around. Not that I’m unimpressed or unhappy with what we have now, but one must never lose hope for something better or complete.

I forgot Sunrise in my best silent films. Late addition there.
