A nice guild mention for “Crazy Heart” which establishes some wider-spread love for the film. It’s still a threat to slide into the 10, I’m telling you.
I expect this to be the period field minus “Julie & Julia” and add “Inglourious Basterds” (which was surprisingly snubbed) or “Bright Star” (which, the fact that it missed here is a friggin’ TRAVESTY).
Then again, I suppose Nora Ephron’s film, or even the flashy “Bruno,” are certainly possibilities. Maybe even the vibrant threads of “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” my pick for best in show in this category.
“Avatar” gets another guild boost, while Danny Glicker is cited for “Up in the Air,” reminding me of our discussion of his vision for the threads in Jason Reitman’s film. Check out the full list after the jump and at The Circuit.

Out. Of. Their. Fucking. Minds.
But then, these are the guys who didn’t nominate “Moulin Rouge!” and who have given Sandy Powell only ONE previous nomination. Go figure.
Who does Bright Star need to fuck to get some attention?
“Sandy Powell only ONE previous nomination. Go figure”
Say waah? – Actually I don’t feel so bad for Bright Star now, but I think come Oscar time there will be no love for Bright Star
Call me crazy but i loved what Kaplan did in Star Trek. It would be a very nice Costumes nominee. Better costumes than Avatar.
When I first saw Bright Star, I liked it but had a somewhat muted response. The complete snubbing it has faced throughout awards season has turned me into a rabid supporter of the film. This is insane!! Not only are the costumes beautifully crafted but they are an integral part of the story in gaining insight into Fanny’s character.
I certainly hope that the costume nomination for Avatar means they are acknowledging the digital costumes because there was nothing else in that film costume-wise worth noting. Seriously, I only remember the real physical characters wearing raggy t-shirts and sweatpants so it can’t possibly be for that.
Anyway, I wouldn’t discount Julie & Julia. It may not have had the most lavish costumes, but they were memorable not to mention it is a female-driven film, which is almost the only kind of films that get Oscar nominations for costumes. Inglourious Basterds did deserve a nomination, but at the same time it’s not a huge surprise since it’s not very female-driven.
Yes, I (emphatically!) agree the across the board snubbing with the last & biggest straw being Costume Design is down right ridiculous. Did Jane Campion kill someone recently or do something taboo that would cause a precursor blacklisting in this fashion? Outrage. Lets hope the AMPAS gives it the cinematography, cost des, art dir love it most definitely deserves and wishful thinking about Ms. Cornish in Lead.
Nominations will be: Nine, Ingl. Bast, Sherlock Holmes, Imaginarium, and Coco Before Chanel.
I was hoping maybe Red Cliff would show up here.
Remember, there’s usually an out-of-nowhere Oscar nod that pops up in this category despite missing the CDG. Think “Australia,” “Across the Universe,” “Troy”…
Doesn’t this guild almost always make odd and rather obvious snubs though? I can’t think of any other off the top of my head, I just have a vague memory that they have snubbed films that seemed like shoe-ins (and that often did get an Oscar nomination).
I’ve said it before though, Bright Star seems like it’s cursed. I’ve never seen such a relatively acclaimed film be so unlucky/unloved. I keep waiting for Campion or someone in the main cast to die suddenly and mysteriously, it really seems to be that unlucky.
big inglourious and bright star snubs, certainly some of the best costumes of the year
When I think of the year in costumes, I think of Laurent’s red dress in Basterds. Of Pitt’s white tux. Of Firth’s impeccable Tom Ford-approved wardrobe. This list is bollocks. Nice to see Bruno get a nod though… and 500 Days. Loved Zooey’s red-lined coat in that one…
No Inglourious and no Bright Star. FAIL.
And Avatar, but no Watchmen?
Worst guilds this year … ever.
They’ve just become so populist lately, rather than awarding what’s specialized for their guild.
Kris, I agree. TRAVESTY for BS. I mean, not only were the costumes gorgeous, but it was part & parcel to the story, really.
How discouraging. I want more and more to burn the costumes of “The Young Victoria” in effigy.
N8, lol.
‘Inglourious Basterds’, ‘A Single Man’, and ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ all deserve to be in here. I am baffled by some of these lackluster noms (Nine? Really? Boring film, boring threads.) and hope that the Oscars will get it right.
White tuxedos don’t get nominations though, never have, never will. As much as one would think that a period film like A Single Man that on top of everything is directed by a fashion designer would be a shoe-in, it’s exactly the kind of film that gets no respect.
At the precursors, get bent.
At Jane Campion & Co., I would marry “Bright Star” if it were a woman. There’s a lot of love for your film from Me.
They just had to nominate Avatar? For what exactly. Army clothes? So why no Hurt Locker?
Please correct me if I’m wrong but costume design has as much to do with making the costumes. Not just designing them on paper (or computer).
This is alsmost as stupid as the Avatar best make-up nomination from the BFCA. But at least they nominated Inglourious Basterds and Where the Wild Things Are for costume design!
Oh well.
Avatar has done quite well for itself with guild noms

First, how is “Nine” period???
Second, how could “Cheri” be ignored? Just gorgeous costuming… http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1179258/mediaindex
How is “Nine” not period?
The costumes/puppets for the wild things in Where the Wild Things Are were considered apart of the visual effects. They were made by the Jim Henson company, not Casey Storm, the costume designer.
I really don’t get the nomination for costumes for Crazy Heart. Half the time Jeff Bridges was undressed in bed. I’m sorry, this is really a sad nomination.
Unfair that they chose to give Tom Ford a pass. I recall Jean-Paul Gaultier being snubbed of an Oscar nomination for The Fifth Element in 1997 (before the CDG Awards existed) — may it point to an aversion of movie costumographers towards haute couture designers taking their jobs? (It’s a stretch, but still.)
As for Avatar, I do believe the digital costumes are part of the costume design — I wouldn’t go as far to say Avatar’s were good enough to nominate, but they were costumes, and someone obviously designed them.
Remember a couple of years ago, when The Golden Compass was nominated for the best Art Direction Oscar? Bear in mind, that’s an award that includes the set decorator. And yet, most of the sets (not all, but the most impressive ones) were digital constructions.
Of course, this opens a can of worms: costumography, as well as make-up and hair and set decoration, is an art — which means it relies on one’s power of imagining beautiful clothing and costumes (be they real ol virtual).
But on the other hand, these are also crafts: a beautiful idea of a dress (or in Avatar’s case, a loincloth) might not translate into an actual beautiful dress if sewn less than skillfully. Yet, the designers of Avatar’s costumes didn’t have to worry about material, construction etc., because their creations were unrestrained by physicality.
Unfair? Maybe! Different, sure.
Tom Ford isn’t actually the costume designer on “A Single Man” (though some of the men’s wardrobe is taken from his collection, apparently). Arianne Phillips (a previous Oscar nominee for “Walk the Line,” and a three-time CGD nominee) is.
Oh! My bad, I just assumed.
Patterson’s never been nominated for CDG despite having 3 Oscar noms. However, she has picked up just her 2nd Bafta nom so I think she has a good chance at an Oscar nom.
Good call, j.
These are ridiculously bad.
Avatar?! WTF. Why not Harry Potter or Watchmen or Where the Wild Things Are? But they get passed over for Avatar’s costumes (army outfit, white lab coat, pieces of cloth) that you could find at any Party City around Halloween.
Bright Star is getting majorly screwed over but at least you would think it could get a Costume nomination, for Christ’s sake.
Inglourious Basterds has some of the most memorable costumes if the year– Shosanna and Bridget’s evening dresses and the entire Nation’s Pride premiere.
“Remember, there’s usually an out-of-nowhere Oscar nod that pops up in this category despite missing the CDG. Think “Australia,” “Across the Universe,” “Troy”…”
“Australia” was designed by an Academy fave in Catherine Martin, “Across the Universe” by a legend. That “Troy” one sure was out of thin air though and Bob Ringwood hasn’t done anything since, which is even stranger.
These nominations are so bizarre. How can they nominated (deservedly so, should be an Oscar nom for) “Bruno” and “Coco avant Chanel” yet not “Bright Star”, which all feature fashion as vital elements to the story?
That “Avatar” nod is just… wow. I don’t get it at all. “Watchmen” deserved that much more.
N8, I’m right there with you. Can we burn the entire film?!
If I had a say the nominees would be Bright Star, Bruno, Coco avant Chanel, Inglourious Basterds and The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus.
Glenn, that’s an awesome and deserving set of nominees you personally list up there. I’m for those.
Well, Nine is considered a period film because it is set in the 1960s [?]. And Julie & Julia’s costumes were great. Remember Julia Child’s height was like 6’2″ and Streep’s 5’7″. How did they make her look so tall? The costumes. So no undeserved nom here I am afraid.
I think Bright Star has more chances in the cinematography category. I also think the main problem with it is that the movie is beautifully boring. The average voters probably didn’t like it and that’s why it’s getting snubbed pretty much everywhere.
I am really puzzled regarding the overwhelming ‘ignore’ mode that the professionals(all the guilds-even the costume designers!!??) the critics(yes all those critics that gave it an 83% in rotten tomatoes while the top critics gave it a 97%positive notices, and raved about it in their publications) and the oscarologists and am not talking about us commentators, am talking about the bloggers who get so upset about the inclusion or exclusion of Nine or The Lovely Bones or whatever other film that once deemed a contender, and no-one really argues about the complete absence of Bright Star in any damn list, a period film that has Academy-friendly written all over it!! Even the Baftas which were it’s best cahences to get some big nods for Cornish, British Film or even for Campion, completely ignored it save for a mention in costumes! I mean , seriously? Is there an underground hate-campaign or what?
Bill and qwiggles I love you guys-At last I see that am not the only one bemused during this crazy aw-eirds season!
Yeah, I was kinda expecting Bright Star here… Now Janet Patterson has the right to start a revolution!!! LoL!
Anyway, even Cheri IMO deserves a nomination here compared to Coco Before Chanel..
I think Nine also deserves it nomination and it might be the only hope of the film for an Oscar…
In the fantasy category, I can’t believe the costume of Star Trek is better than that of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince or Nine?
And Avatar? Come on, there’s barely no costume on the movie….. And I don’t find the clothes of the real word fantastic….
But the rest were well deserved…
Correction: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and CORALINE, not Nine… ;)
Wow. where was it written about Patterson torching headquarters? I mean seriously, how could Bright Star not be nominated. THis great film is heading for 0 read ZERO Oscar noms
