In Contention

Delayed

I haven’t been able to even sit down and think about today’s Off the Carpet column, let alone write it, and I’m off to Sony soon for what should be an interesting sound mixing demo on “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.” I’ll have it for you later tonight.  In the meantime, the Contenders and sidebar predictions have been updated.

You gave up on Samantha Morton pretty soon!

I know you´re hesitant to predict Diane Kruger, but right now she´s looking better than Moore and obviously Gyllenhaal.

And Cruz will finally make it, imo, we like it or not. Even if it´s by default.

Interesting to see the Gyllenhaal prediction. I just saw Crazy Heart and was a bit underwhelmed – even as a Maggie devotee. Not that she was bad, but I felt the plot deliberately went against what the character stated quite explicitly. The character clearly knew she was making bad (or Bad) decisions but made them anyway with no real explanation. I don’t think it was Gyllenhaal’s fault, but she definitely didn’t help the matter.

I hope her first nomination comes from a better performance. I have no doubt it’ll be soon, but I don’t think this one’s the right one.

Nice you updated your predictions but i dont get Maggie Gyllenhaal in best supporting actress over Morton, Laurent and Cotillard and Crazy Heart in best A. Screeplay.

The movie only has chances for Bridges.

Jake: No real explanation? It didn’t need an explanation. Surely you’ve been involved with someone you know is bad for you but nevertheless commands your love and affection? (Or maybe you haven’t?)

Pablo: For so many reasons that have everything to do with the fact that you don’t talk to Academy members, you’re dead wrong on Crazy Heart.

Kruger is possible, certainly more likely than Laurent since no one with a cross-over AMPAS membership has mentioned Laurent (critics don’t vote for Oscars, that’s the mantra). Ditto Morton. Maybe Cotillard, but the film is just floundering. How can anyone NOT sense that at this point?

Maggie was shifted to supporting some weeks back and is working the publicity circuit now, when it counts, and I’m betting (for now) that it pans out for her.

District 9! Yay! Now just bump Invictus for (500) Days of Summer.

But I feel like she’s already had that experience in her life – and the script seemed so adamant that she -had- learned her lesson that the decision didn’t have any real character decision behind it. Buddy always seems like her #1 priority, but yet she defies that. They were seeing each other because the plot demanded it, IMO.

I really wish I could have bought into the film a lot more. I really appreciated the screenplay (especially the dialogue – no character said something out of place), but the plotting left something to be desired.

I can’t tell you how many times I or someone I know -has- learned that lesson only to be fooled again. Frankly I think that’s one of the points of the script.

I just don’t feel like there were the character decisions to back it. Agree to disagree I suppose. :)

Oh I so hope you’re right about Maggie Gyllenhaal! That would make my morning if she was nominated. Such a wonderful performance, and certainly one that helps make Bridges’ what it is.

Kris, I was curious if you were going to post your Top Shots of 2009?

Sorry to see you drop Bright Star from cinematography but I think sadly that is the right call. How this great film continues to be snubbed by all but BAFTA is the great mystery of this awards season

Andrew: BAFTA could still snub it. Don’t get too comfortable with those longlists — there are usually a few mismatches between the Chapter leaders and the final nominees.

Carter: I’ve addressed this already. It’ll come. Busy.
