WEEKLY WRAP: Guilds, lists and disqualifications

Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker• In a big week for precursor announcements, the DGA nominations were the biggest — and least surprising.

• The PGA, meanwhile, found room for all three of the year’s hot sci-fi titles in its nominee slate.

• “The Hurt Locker” triumphed at the National Society of Film Critics Awards, the first film in 12 years to sweep the three top critics’ prizes.

• Over five days, I counted down my personal Top 50 films of the decade that was.

• And we’re not done listing: Chad also gathered his 20 favorites of 2009.

• The USC Scripter nominations were announced, with the inclusion of “District 9” prompting much head-scratching.

• This week’s Off the Carpet column considered why “The Messenger” could spring a surprise in Best Picture lineup.

• “Avatar” maintained its stranglehold on the box office, and looks set to go unchallenged this weekend too.

• In Tech Support, we interviewed the assorted craftsmen behind “The Hurt Locker.”

• The week’s third Guild nominee announcement came from the Art Directors Guild.

• The AMPAS music branch was up to its usual tricks, disqualifying such titles as “Where the Wild Things Are” and “Crazy Heart” from the Oscar race.

• That’s nothing compared to the WGA, whose pile-up of ineligible titles includes “Inglourious Basterds,” “An Education,” “District 9,” “In the Loop,” “Up,” “A Single Man” …

• Speaking of writers, “Bright Star,” despite having an original screenplay, will compete in the adapted race at the Oscars.

• The list of contenders for the Best Visual Effects Oscar was whittled down to seven titles.

• A fortnight ahead of their actual nominations, the BAFTA longlists favored “An Education” — while the group also revealed their foreign-language nominees.

• We discussed the cultural significance of “Avatar” versus “Up in the Air” at the Oscars.

• But with all eyes on those two and “The Hurt Locker,” I made my case for “Inglourious Basterds” taking Best Picture.

• Once more, Kris and Anne handily summarized the week in Oscar Talk.

Great to see Bright Star figure well in the BAFTA long lists, making the top 5 (guild) choices in Actress, Production Design, Make Up, Costume and Cinematography and in the top 15 in Actor, Director, Original Screenplay and Music.

Oscar will not be so kind
