Listomania

Assorted technical problems at my rustic holiday base in Ireland have put me a whole day behind schedule — so my Best of 2009 list will land tomorrow, in lieu of a Long Shot column. With any luck, a best-of-decade collective will follow sometime before the year is out.

In the meantime, you have Kris’s own rather brilliant 2000s retrospective to keep you entertained. À bientôt.

Thanks for continuing to promote Summer Hours, Guy. Such richness and emotion. I need to watch it again soon.

Glad to hear you’re on the team for the film too. Though I should warn it won’t show up on tomorrow’s list — having already appeared on last year’s! (Too low, at that — it turned out to be a grower.)

Looking forward to your list tomorrow. And London film critics did a great selection with A prophet, The White Ribbon and Hurt Locker nominated for their Best Picture award.

Guy, I imagine you’ve seen the “Big Four” by this point? I’m just asking because you haven’t chimed in yet with your thoughts on them.

Did you get to see them in advance screenings, or did you have to wait for them to open in London?

The Big Four are Avatar, Nine, The Lovely Bones and Invictus, right? Then I’ve seen them all. I’m sure my thoughts will become clear eventually.

    I love Phoenix.

The London Film Critics should be ashamed for not nominating Tilda Swinton in Best British Actress. WTF is happening this year?

Oh yeah, btw Guy, before I saw Julia, I hadn’t read about its plot. From the pics posted on the site here whenever she was mentioned, seeing the tragedy mask on her head–my gut assumption was that her character was a theater diva….

Boy, was I thrown for a loop!

Oh, and two I saw upon release, one at an advance screening and one on a screener.

Other James D: “Julia” won’t be eligible for any British awards, as it was a 2008 release here in the UK. That said, the London Film Critics failed to nominate her last year, so your reprimand still applies.

I believe it was the Evening Standard Film Awards, however, who gave her their Best Actress award at the start of the year. Credit to them.

Yup, it was. They get major kudos for not only nominating, but awarding her. It’s a muted satisfaction to know she has at least one award to her credit for that role.

I guess all that’s left are the Oscars and…the Chlotrudis Awards.

Swinton also got a Cesar nod early this year, together with Kristin Scott Thomas. They both lost to … LAFCA winner Yolande Moreau.

Who would have thought the Cesars would be so ahead of the curve? ;)
