I wasn’t aware that this was the greatest adventure of all time.

so did they recycle the voiceover from the Journey to Center of the Earth trailer or what?

Fox are totally right to do this.

For the first time, I think some of the CG looks meh in some of those shots.

20th Century Fox and the self-proclaimed King of the World invite you to experience the adventure of “Fern Gully: The Last Rainforest”. In 3-D, bitches.

hmm, i don’t know which looks worse: this or alice in wonderland.

    boycott horrible CG.

I dont know why everyone is getting their panties in a bunch over this trailer. It’s exclusive to Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, they’re aiming for the four quadrants. No different than the explosion heavy tv spot that played during the NFL/MLB game.

I was reading the extremely negative comments on AwardsDaily just a little while ago, and maybe I should post this over there, but I didn’t think this looks THAT bad at all. Yes, the voice-over is ridiculously over-selling it, but in all honesty, there must be dozens of other films that were also sold as being “the greatest adventure ever” and other such hyperbole.

What this trailer had though, compared to the other two, is a sense of adventure, a sense of wonder and amazement which is what I hope I would get out of a movie that is so talked about for creating a new world. All the other trailers go on about is all-out action, making it seem like there’s nothing else to it. If that ends up being the case, I think I can already chalk up Avatar as a huge disappointment.

But if also captures some adventure and wonder into it like this trailer suggests, this movie might actually turn out to be something more and something memorable.

Ignoring the exaggerated “family film” tone of the trailer, this actually boosted my anticipation of it.

The reason this is bad is not because I think the film will turn out this way, which is precisely what makes me mad. Its a matter of false advertising. Which is it, a care free adventure for the whole family, or what the other 2 trailers promised? Both of them have almost entirely the same footage, but different tones.

Im not doubting that this can appeal to younger audiences, as well as the older crowd, I’m merely pointing out that the same footage has an entirely different feel, and its kind of impossible for that to be the final product.

I was wondering what a Jar Jar Binks spinoff movie would look like.

  12. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

You’d think people didn’t want the studio to make any money off its product.

Making money off the product is fine, just don’t false advertise. And don’t tell me its not false advertising, almost the same exact footage that was presented to us as an Epic Sci Fi became a lackadaisical carefree blast of kid fantasy fun.

Same footage. Different Tone. False Advertising.

Either they are lying to us, or they are lying to them.

Wow. Fail to the max. All it makes want to do is find my VHS of Fern Gully and rewatch that instead.

Love how this was titled “I wanna see that movie, Mommy!”… because that’s exactly what this commercial conveyed

James Cameron better hope that none of the Oscar voters see this…

I can understanding marketing to the younger crowd, but this is a little absurd. Personally, I thought that the actual trailer was pretty trans-generational in appeal, with a special emphasis on younger audiences

Hahaha, I love the title. This really does look like it’s being marketed as a children’s movie.

    Loyal: You nailed it.

Of course it’s in a different tone! IT’S FOR A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AUDIENCE! I mean for goodness sake, it aired on Cartoon Network! That audience being boys ages 6-12. The ads aired during the World Series however, were for primarily men aged 18-34, so of course it had to use a different tone to sell the movie by adding hardcore action and explosions.

It’s genius of Fox to air the CN/Nick ad, in order to appeal to the kids.

This spot makes it look schlocky, superficial, derivative but it made me want to see it more than the previous two trailers (first one bad, second one gave everything away and laying on the allegory a bit too thick). Hopefully it will be stupid and fun.

Maybe that says more about me than it says about Avatar.

  22. […] There is a new Avatar TV trailer that shows a little more than we’ve seen in previous trailers and is narrated as if it is a children’s movie from the 90s. Check it out after the jump… [In Contention] […]

This always happens when a movie that fanboys are drooling over (myself included) decides to be aimed at more than 3% of the country.

This reminds me of the kind of movie advertising I’d see watching TV as a child. It’s sort of nostalgic in a way, actually!

I’d say it’s great for what it’s trying to do, i.e. bring in the legions of young boys and girls who will go on to buy the toys and stuff.

It’s just not /for/ us which I think a lot of people reacting negatively seem to forget. You can’t target everyone with one kind of advertising. Different demographics need a different pitch.

The entire point of a trailer is to false advertise. Screaming foul on that now is pretty naive.

On the topic of Fern Gully…..I don’t think Avatar can compete with Robin Williams’s Batty Rap.

And about the trailer, I just don’t see where the buzz for this movie is coming from? It looks to me like it is going to be a 2 hour video game trailer. This type of film just does not interest me at all. Everything looks like they are trying so hard to oversell it and personally I think it just looks kinda lame. With that said, I am a sucker for seeing all of the Oscar nominated type films so I will probably still be seeing it, but I will wait a week or two to hear how other people (not just critics) actually think of the film before deciding if it is worth my time. This trailer definitely doesn’t make it seem like it will be worth my time.

I just don’t find the CGI in this new and exciting at all. Same “gosh gee whiz” camera angles, same flourishes that we’ve seen in a million of these movies.

I enjoyed this trailer. Was it cheesy? Yes, but it sold the film better to me than any of the other trailers did. I’m a huge fan of children’s fantasy, so personally I’d probably be more satisfied if the end result was more like this than the other trailers.
