Examining themes of faith, family and fortunes, “A Serious Man,” is a film about consequences, both unwarranted and equitable and a meticulously crafted film that demands a second viewing to soak up all the puzzle pieces and clues. It’s a picture you need to meditate on, but breathtaking is really the word for it. It starts out rather humdrum and unremarkable, but as the story builds, lilts, exhales and then crescendos, it’s like an incredible orchestra firing on every cylinder, virtuoso notes and vibratos being held just thusly.

From Rodrigo Perez’s all-out rave of the Coen brothers’ “A Serious Man.”

Gong! I can’t get excited with its movie trailer. The “second viewing” is a turn off. It’s homework. Seriously, a second viewing to soak up everything? A $10 luxury that I cannot get behind.

I don’t “need” a second viewing, but give me a break. If you’re not willing to see films multiple times you’re nothing but a filmgoer in passing who has no business discussing movies beyond water-cooler one-offs. Sorry.

At first I found the trailer too stark, but as the days pass, I appreciate more and more the finesse it has. It’s not flashy or “Yowza!”, but rather a meditative one. And I like that; it’s great when it’s against the grain of typicality.

Also, how can you judge solely on a trailer? Hasn’t recent evidence proven how irrelevant trailers are? Oftentimes, the most exciting trailers yield the least exquisite films. I actually avoid trailers until the latter half of the year, because I prefer less expectations.
