In Contention

R.I.P. Patrick Swayze

I got the AP alert on my iPhone while I was out this afternoon and my heart sank.  Patrick Swayze is gone. For most it was “Dirty Dancing.”  For some it was “Point Break.”  Still others, “Ghost.”  For me, the man was epitomized in the bad-assery of “Road House” and that’s how I choose to remember him.  But I couldn’t resist the opportunity to pay this ode to two of our fallen entertainers:

This story reminds me of when my uncle was diagnosed with esophageal cancer (very low survival rate) only a month ago. He recently underwent an operation that actually changed mid-procedure because the doctor’s instincts “didn’t feel right.” I guess he had good instincts because he made a full recovery and is now able to swallow food.

Reading this reminds me that not everyone is that lucky with cancer. Rest in peace, Patrick.

For me it was Dirty Dancing. I was a kid and was fascinated by that film.

    RIP Patrick Swayze

I’m saddened by the news despite the fact that I despise Dirty Dancing and Ghost (thanks to my sisters watching the VHS tapes every weekend, it seems).

Also for some reason, I thought of Ron White’s bit about bouncers beating off to Road House when they’re home not bouncing.

This is one of the most oddly-articulated but well put tributes I have ever seen dedicated to a person. Well done.
