I guess it’s landing a little early. /Film has the exclusive teaser for Jason Reitman’s “Up in the Air,” which the director conceived himself exclusively for the internet. It’s a beautiful piece that really captures the tone and spirit of the film.
I generally prefer trailers put together by filmmakers (Paul Thomas Anderson does it a lot) because they tend to be free of the usual marketing tropes and have an artistic value unto themselves. Reitman didn’t do the actual editing (he gives credit there to the folks at Acme, who also do his opening credits sequences). But still, it clearly comes from the same mind that conceived the film. You don’t get that very often. There will be another trailer down the line, something geared toward the masses, I’m sure (and there’s obviously a necessity for that), but I’m glad this one’s out there:

I like that a lot more than the clip you posted yesterday. Also, Galifanakis.
I don’t know if this is newsworthy for your site, Kris, but io9 did an interview yesterday with Jordu Schell, who is the concept artist and character designer for the Na’Vi in James Cameron’s Avatar.
The interview itself reveals some…interesting details about what Cameron wanted.
Whoa, guess I wasn’t expecting that. Looks much more serious than either of Reitman’s previous films.
Hamer: Thanks for pointing it out. I’ll give it a look.
Apparently there will not be any Reitman films ever sans J.K. Simmons. And there’s nothin’ wrong with that at all.
Hmm, looks rather haunting, actually. I’m intrigued.
Up in the Front…in the Oscar race. Err, something like that.
Jason Reitman is the master at finding and hitting the zeitgeist. I think “Up in the Air” will prove it.
Reitman: Cast J.K. Simmons in all of your movies for the rest of your life. Why mess with a good thing?
Is it possible those shots of swimming and running the treadmill at the hotel are a salute to Lost in Translation?
Also, thumbs up for Danny McBride. And Jason Bateman. And Zach Galifianakis?
It looks amazing. This seems like the perfect role for Clooney. For those of you who have seen the movie, does Kendrick or Farmiga get more screentime? Kendrick is one of my favorite younger actresses after Rocket Science.
And I didn’t know about McBride or Bateman or Simmons being in this… but that just makes me even more excited.
I’d say the screen time is about equal. Neither stands out from the pack (nor should they), but Kendrick gets the comic relief.
So, it’s lessons from a middle-aged man.
Hm, that looks veeery interesting and… melancholic? Anyway, can’t wait to see it.
Kris, does this trailer well-represent the mood of the film? It looks a little somber.
Also, I wonder if much has been written of the parallel careers of Judd Apatow and Jason Reitman. First film, a straight comedy. Second film, a pregnancy comedy, released in 2007 to critical acclaim. Third film, a deeply personal comedy, released in 2009 to much hype. Looks like Reitman pulled it off where Apatow couldn’t. Are Jason Bateman, Sam Elliot, and JK Simmons Reitman’s Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, and Paul Rudd?
No idea what happened to the trailer. Hunting it down now. Sigh…
Alright, we’re back up.
my excitement for this just keeps building
good trailer
Looks great. Love the voiceover and the somewhat forlorn piano piece.
I’m in.
Is the music from the trailer Rolfe Kent’s score? Or is it just a temp piece from another movie because it really is beautiful.
Typical liberal bullshit :
White Alpha Male facing middle-age crisis
White Female sexually frustrated
Both tired of having to work for a living (must be their French ancestry)
Both voted for Obama
Both bought the Juno DVD
Next !
I generally wasn’t that excited for this film till I saw this trailer, which I thought to be fantastic. This film has definitely become one of my more anticipated films for the rest of the year.
Trailer was great. Visually beautiful. Loved the voice-over and music. Gave an idea of tone, but didn’t really give anything away of the story. I love the cast, but I’m most excited about Anna Kendrick. She was phenomenal in Rocket Science, and I also felt that she was the only one in the Twilight movie who may’ve realized how ridiculous it all was. But that’s just my own reading of her performance. Again, amazing in Rocket Science, excited that she’s in this too.
hey Kris, do you by any chance remember if the music in the trailer is from the film’s score?
I’m kinda obsessing over it since I first saw the trailer , and really curious to know what it is!
The music is Genova by Charles Atlas.
Now has surged to the top of my to-see list. This is going to be GREAT.
Looks really great. Not at all what I expected it to be, agree with whoever said it had a melancholic/sombre feel to it. P.s. LOVE Vera Farmiga! One of the most underrated actresses in films today, IMO.
Zach might want to shave his beard for serious roles.
Hey, Marko, thanks.
