Baldwin on Vick

What [Michael] Vick did is, obviously, senseless and reprehensible. But I believe Vick, as a wealthy and talented athletic superstar who performs his job out in the open before crowds of amped-up and highly opinionated fans, suffers an unfair disadvantage as compared to, say, the heads of a meatpacking plant or the directors of a medical research lab where animals are suffering the cruelest imaginable abuses behind walls and doors that remove them from our sight and, therefore, judgments. Vick did horrific things and he deserved to be punished. He served his time and now I wonder what good does it do to exile him in shame and not let him show his example of how one can be rehabilitated after that kind of behavior.

From a recently posted Huffington Post item that I read with Alec Baldwin’s smooth, whispery syntax in my mind throughout.

    Good point.

But it takes a certain kind of mind and person to drown and execute animals. Why would one want that mind on one’s football team? Also, was Vick ever that good of a quarterback? RHETORICAL QUESTION.

What does Jamie Foxx in “Collateral” say to Cruise in the cab? Something about “lacking standard parts” I think. Have fun NFL.

    It’s time for college football!

That’s the thing, I don’t think he is genuinely sorry. He needs to address the culture of Dog Fighting in his apologies. He’s only sorry he was caught and punished for it, never really feeling any pity or remorse for the animals themselves, but for the setback it cost his career.

Although, point taken for Baldwin’s comment of our attitude towards animal cruelty in general. It is very true that we don’t (most of us anyway) blink an eye when eating a fast food burger. Those poor animals suffer systematically in government sanctioned slaughter factories, most of us wouldn’t want to give up burgers. Shaming and criticizing Vick is convenient, because we don’t have to sacrifice a thing. It’s so convenient.

In fact, we’re gaining. The “I hate Michael Vick” sentiment is the newest “look at me, my morals are bigger than yours!”
