Even though the thriller throttle is wide open, the moody atmospherics of this just-released trailer for Martin Scorsese’s “Shutter Island” had me from frame one. DiCaprio looks in confident control, everything in stride these days. Kingsley conveys subtle sinister panache with the best of them. Haley is having the time of his life, taking the bull by the horns. And how can Bob Richardson be at the top of his game each and every time he turns his light meter on?
This one just shot to the top as must-see. Now. Give it to me ASAP.

The plot twist is not at all obvious from this trailer. If you think you know it, you’re guessing wrong.
I agree with The InSneider; I was picturing an older man when I read the book, but don’t think Leo will have any trouble.
Now we need trailers for An Education, The Lovely Bones, and Avatar.
Good trailer, but not impressed. And again just like Rev. Road, the fault is from DiCaprio. I just don’t like the way he acts. He always looks the same, no matter how hard he tries.
I know is just a trailer and Scorcese is master and looks a horror Hitchcock movie and the cast is amazing, but DiCaprio is not good enough.
Scorcese is almost always good so this will be good in its genre, I imagine, but I am not impressed with DiCaprio here. The overdone accent — yet again. He was the weak link in The Departed in my opinion and while I think he is a fine actor in many roles, he does not appeal so far here.
Looks like an episode of The Twilight Zone. I LOVE the Twilight Zone so that a good thing. I just watched Decaprio in Revolutionary Road. His acting was great. Movie is bleak but some of it rings very true.

Brendan, I couldn’t disagree more. I thought Leo was THE actor in The Departed. IMO, of course, he outacted Jack in that and made Damon look pretty ordinary. I loved the Baldwin and Wahlberg bit parts, but Leo was what made the movie an acting success for me.
McGuff, just my opinion, of course. But what bothered me is the constant look of fear/I’m hiding something on his face every time he’s talking to Jack Nicholson. Utterly unbelievable. Who, for a moment, would think the Nicholson character would buy a guy that’s looking that way all the time. This has been a real sticking point for me. It was true overacting — as was the accent. He was much better in Revolutionary Road
DiCaprio was the weak link in Rev. Road, because he just tries to hard. He didn’t seems to be Kate Winslet’s husband, but her brother or child lol.
He is a good actor, but not the best of his generation just like Kate W. and Scorcese should know that.
The funny thing is, people overact in real life…have you ever seen someone truly angry and full of rage like Leo was in Rev Road? They look like a cartoon. Anyways his accent was spot on in The Departed, but if you’re gonna criticize it, you have to criticize Wahlberg and Nicholson, because they laid it on just as thick.
I saw Kate W. angry and full of rage in Rev. Road and it didn´t seem to be like a cartoon, but a real person. That’s why she is a wonderful actress and Leo no.
DiCaprio owned Revolutionary Road, in my opinion. And I agree with McGuff on his work in The Departed. It’s been a long time since the actor let me down. (Admittedly, I never saw Body of Lies.)
As for the trailer, it certainly pushes my buttons, but then I’m a longtime Cape Fear champion. Can’t wait to see Scorsese in full Grand Guignol mode again.
“DiCaprio owned Rev. Road…”? What, that is insane! All the critics said that Michael Shannon was the surprise of the film, but when I saw I couldn’t stop looking at Kate w. in every scene. It’s her best performance.
An in the end, I was mad about Leo because he couldn’t be in the same level of her, so the couple that was the main character of the film was ruined, because of him. He has a baby face and a way of act that will never change. And Shutter Island will be another example.
And by the way, you can take that nomination for best actor, as you did for Philip S. H. It will never happen.
The Leo bile is shocking. I think he’s been at the top of his game for years now. The last questionable performance he gave was in “Gangs of New York,” IMO.
Last questionable performance? What about Body of Lies? Terrible. And Blood of diamonds not so good…
It’s not bile. At least not from me. I think he’s a good actor who gets great roles because of his power in Hollywood and his box office draw. I’m a bit tired of him, to be honest. And I think there are actors who are a better fit for some of the roles he’s had. Actors who are far more interesting and with more depth. All I’ve seen is a trailer here. He may be great. But the trailer is ho-hum relative to him. It’s a standard problem with big stars, I think. You just start to get tired of them unless they do something significantly different — doesn’t look like that here.
Sorry, I’m trying really hard, but I don’t get that Leo Love from Scorsese. 2 films, ok, but 4 ? whats next, the one about Theodore Roosevelt ?
KRIS — THANKS FOR CALLING IT — BILE INDEED!!!! Leo is among the finest actors working in movies today, perhaps the most natural talent since Sean Penn emerged back in 1982 — he makes each line coming out of his mouth soumnd as though he were saying it (and meaning it) for the first time — the weak link in “The Departed”???? — are you freaking kidding me???? He should have been nominated for that instead of “Blood Diamond” which in itself was a good performance — he was not the issue in ‘Body of Lies” and in fact was just fine and bloody Oscar worthy in ‘Revolutionary Road” — get off his back and learn something about great acting — Jesus Christ this pisses me off — “I just don’t like the way he acts” — what the fuck is that??? Perhaps the person making that comment should be his acting coach?? May I remind those nay sayers the kid was brilliant in ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?”, incrdedible in ‘Catch Me If You Can”, ‘The Aviator”, “The Departed”, “Blood Diamond”, “Revolutionary Road”, and elevated a terrible James Cameron screenplay in “Titanic” — he struggled with “Gangs of New York” but was not terrible — best actor under 35..destined to be thought of as Brando was….
Make no mistake, I think Winslet is very fine in “Revolutionary Road.” But I thought DiCaprio’s physicality in the film was quite astonishing — it’s certainly a quieter performance than those of his co-stars, but it’s stayed with me the most. If that makes me “insane,” so be it.
And nothing Kate Winslet has done, before or since, has come close to topping “Eternal Sunshine” for me.
I’m gonna stop reading because someone’s gonna spoil the movie more for me. But I do wanna say how amazing it looks and feels. Can’t wait!
I see that nobody can’t touch mrs. DiCaprio. But comparing him to Sean Penn? You must be really crazy. And again, the worst part of Rev. Road: Leo D. He have always the same expressions, that mad face that he does for the same movies is so annoying.
And there are soo many better actors: Joaquin Phoenix, Heath Ledger, Matt Damon, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Ryan Gosling and the list goes on and on…
Really? Gosling? He’s okay, but what exactly has he done to prove he’s one of the best actors of his generation?
Also, I must be crazy because I think Sean Penn is as overrated as some of you say DiCaprio is.
Before I forget, I thought Half Nelson wasn’t that great.
Well, I think that his performance is Half Nelson was at the same level of the greatest from Leo. That is exactly what?…
@brando..how are you even putting jonathan and ryan in the same league as leo? they have done absolutely nothing for cinema and i honestly cannot give you a performance from either of them that is even above subpar.
Leo has consistently provided great acting performance after great acting performance.
@guy
you really think eternal was kate’s best performace? because i would have to disagree, i think finding neverland, little children and rev road were all better than eternal
I don’t have a problem with Leo’s acting but his career is becoming pretty uninteresting to me. I didn’t bother seeing his last three films and I think all three of his Scorsese collaborations have resulted in sporadically good but overall messy films.
Deshawn: I’m afraid we’re on very different wavelengths here. I’d say Winslet’s five best performances are in:
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Holy Smoke!
Extras (seriously)
Romance and Cigarettes
Heavenly Creatures
Only then would I start to consider the likes of Revolutionary Road or Little Children.
Chad: Why am I not surprised?
(I kid, I kid.)
Deshawn, I think that Jonathan and Ryan may have been involved in few projects, but they didn’t had the same chances that Leo had. And the results are no surprising at all.
I have no problem with him, but he is a privileged actor that never made significant progress.
Chad’s the king at dissing stuff he hasn’t seen.
Anyway, regarding Leo, he was fine in “Body of Lies.” It’s the film that sucked. And he was actually outstanding, I thought, in “Blood Diamond.” Another accent nailed (Guy?).
So yeah, I still say the last time he offered something confused, it was GONY.
I agree Kris, that he was outstanding Blood Diamond. I fucking love that movie. However, I enjoyed Body of Lies. Not as good as one would’ve hoped from DiCaprio, Crowe, Scott, and Monahan, but still good.
Agreed that DiCaprio gives the best performance in “Revolutionary Road.” In fact, I was surprised to come out of the movie thinking he one-up Winslet. Pretty amazing, and horribly overlooked last year.
Yep, I thought his accent was almost impeccable in “Blood Diamond.” More than that, however, I thought he captured the gait and mannerisms of the typical Afrikaner male more precisely than any foreign actor I’ve ever seen. It’s a really smart performance that gets undue hate simply because the Academy didn’t nominate him for “The Departed.”
Sorry, *one-upped.
Thank you Brando for bringing up Jonathan Rhys Meyers. He is exactly who I think of as an extremely gifted and very interesting actor who has not yet had great opportunities. He’s been very special when given strong roles. Look at Matchpoint. Look at The Tudors (TV but still). He even managed to squeeze sex appeal, charm and a bit of depth out of August Rush. He’s one to watch, for sure.
Thanks, Brendan. I completely agree with you, he is an extremely gifted actor that had few oportunities so far. And he was wonderful as Elvis, also. I thought that Match Point could do what did for Scarlet J. : chances.
Guy, i feel the same way about Winslet in Eternal Sunshine. For me, it’s the best female performance of the decade.
I don’t get this Leo hate at all. His performance in Revolutionary Road may have been a bit flawed, but that entire movie was a bit flawed. I didn’t bother with Body of Lies (because i can’t stand Russell Crowe at this point). I thought he was the best thing about The Departed, which is a movie that frustrates me in many ways (one of the most poorly edited Scorsese films winning best editing!?). But you simply cannot argue his brilliance in films like The Aviator, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, and Blood Diamond.
I didn’t diss anything I hadn’t seen. Except to say that they didn’t seem worth seeing.
Boo.
You’re right. I should be more positive. I’ll go to my grave defending The Beach as a great movie.
I thought DiCaprio was outstanding in “RR.” He was probably nominated for “BD” instead of for “The Departed” because WB pushed for a supporting nod (Wrong wrong wrong). And his work in “This Boy’s Life” was awards-worthy.
Winslet in Extras as one of her top 5 performances? Seems like a back handed diss to me, you cannot be serious?!
Sure, it’s a great comedic guest spot – but better than Sense and Sensibility? The Reader? Jude? Hamlet? Iris? Little Children? Jesoos. Give the lady her props, Meryl Streep doesn’t have to put up with this shit.
Brando — Phoenix better than Di Caprio? In what? Gosling? In what? Damon? In what? Ledger, brilliant as he was in “Brokeback Mountain” and “The Dark Knight” we will never know how brilliant he might have become…while Di Caprio is already on that path — Gosling was very good in “Half Nelson” but hardly has made an impact and is certainly not deserving to be called one of the best actors of his generation…come on man…are you serious???
If anyone cares what I think, I find DiCaprio among the more talented actors of his generation. More than anything else, I’m very impressed by what he’s done with his career – when handed to opportunity to be an Efronesque “hearthrob” he instead focused on shedding any such label, building up a strong resume of classy performances.
That said, the babyface can be a bit difficult to get over. Hard to believe he’s already in his mid-30s. I wonder what he’ll look like in his 50s. Can this guy really be nearly 10 years older than Seth Rogen?
While I was rather wowed by his performance in Blood Diamond at first, on repeat viewing I found it a bit silly. The film spends too long justifying the accent. The scene at the beginning where DiCaprio’s Danny Archer spells his name has me chuckling. (Aeeh, AAAARHH, seee, auhch, eeee, AAAARHHH.)
The Departed perf was a solid, solid entry into DiCaprio’s resume. He fit tightly into a firm ensemble, with each player about on par with the rest. Damon, Nicholson, Whalberg, Winstone, Baldwin, and Martin Sheen were about just as good. DiCaprio was excellent, but I didn’t find him a stand out.
Maybe Shutter Island will be his moment, but I imagine DiCaprio will strike gold soon enough.
Guy, cheers for sticking Extras among Winslet’s finest moments. A great bit to be sure, but wouldn’t you say that it was the writing more than the performance that really made it work? Anyhow, she was lots of fun. Same goes for Lindsay, Bloom, McKellen, Les Dennis, and Chris Martin. Actually, I do rather think Extras was Orlando Bloom’s best performance.
Nothing back-handed about it, Patrick — Winslet is genius in “Extras.” (And yes, as Bill says, the writing helps immeasurably, but that goes for any number of great performances.)
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — the lady does her finest work in comedy territory.
I have to disagree about Ryan Gosling, John — he was stunning in both “Half Nelson” (robbed of the Oscar, in my humble opinion) and “The Believer,” while the fact that he actually managed to make any sense of his character in “Lars and the Real Girl” demonstrates real actorly intelligence. I think he’s in it for the long haul.
Enough of the Leo defense. He’ll always have his detractors. What genius doesn’t?
JOhn H Foote I hate phrases like best of his generation but Brando’s point, and mine, is precisely that all these actors — Gosling, Rhys Meyers to name two — are interesting and textured and versatile but they are not getting those huge roles. DiCaprio is a good actor. But in some cases he’s not as good as his roles, or even his directors. This is what happens with big stars. I’m not saying he hasn’t earned his stardom. It’s just that as a star and Hollywood powerhouse he’s getting parts that others would do a better job with.
Guy — not saying he’s not a fine a actor, he is — but with only perhaps three strong performances he does not deserve tag “best of a generation” — time will tell — I like the dude, he’s Canadian, but tags like that must be earned as I am sure you will agree —
That looks utter shit. Right now I’ll bet there’s a lot of people crossing this turkey off their Oscar list.
The thing that these kinds trailers do with the “scary” sound effects…cheesy. It’s like they don’t trust the movie to be suspenseful on its own and add some “scariness” to get people interested. At least I HOPE that was just the trailer.
Ben Kingsley in particular looks very good.
Aaaaannnnddd…100 comments! First time we’ve broken that threshold since the season, I think.
