Even though the thriller throttle is wide open, the moody atmospherics of this just-released trailer for Martin Scorsese’s “Shutter Island” had me from frame one. DiCaprio looks in confident control, everything in stride these days. Kingsley conveys subtle sinister panache with the best of them. Haley is having the time of his life, taking the bull by the horns. And how can Bob Richardson be at the top of his game each and every time he turns his light meter on?
This one just shot to the top as must-see. Now. Give it to me ASAP.

I’m a big Scorsese fan but this did nothing for me. The trailer was very psychological thriller/horror film-ish.
This looks pretty fantastic, but i don’t see any oscars. Dicaprio looks good, though. The trailer pretty much had me at hello. Looks like Scorsese and co. having a lot of fun in a very creepy sort of way.
David: So what? You want the same thing from the guy each and every time out? Iâm more stoked to see him offering his considerable talent to a genre film because we know thereâll be more than surface thematics lingering between the frames.
This looks really good. Although I wonder what one would think about this movie and the trailer if they didn’t know Marty was directing. My only problem is Leo. I’m really tired of his Billy Costigan shtick. I cringed when I heard his Boston accent in the trailer. I hope Nolan will ask Leo for some new notes when Inception gets underway.
wye: Leave the “O” word out of it. I know we’re awards-focused but that’s the last thing on my mind when something snaps me to attention like this did.
Loved the book. Dug the trailer. But my roommate, who hasn’t read the book, guessed the twist about 1:20 into the trailer. Doesn’t bode well…
Kris, I didn’t like the trailer, doesn’t mean I won’t like the film. My problem is that if you removed Scorsese’s name from the credit, this would have seemed like any run-0f-the-mill psychological thriller trailer that has ever come out.
And yeah, i agree with Mr. Gittes. The trailer made it seem like Billy Costigan got a partner and got stuck on an island (partly another reason I didn’t like the trailer).
@Mr. Gittes: Be careful what you wish for. He may give him the name of the guy who taught Bale his Batman voice.
The InSneider is right, the twist is obvious.
Easy with the plot talk, InSneider. I want to know nothing going into this. Maybe I shouldn’t be here talking about this, then. Yeah.
Actually I wonder if Leo is insecure about his voice. Seriously.
I’ve been whining about it on other sites – I didn’t read the book and the twist was obvious.
However, I love how creepy the movie looks.
I think this looks great, Marty has dissapointed since 2002

Wasnt that a New York accent, not Boston?
In the book, DiCaprio’s character is from Massachusetts.
FYI, I read this book while listening to Interpol’s Antics over and over so that’s the only music I hear in my head when I think of this film. Very ominous and foreboding. And oddly enough, pictured Teddy as a guy in his 50s or 60s, like Clint in Blood Work.
Supporting cast looks fucking fantastic in this. Elias Koteas is the MAN!
omg…i really hope the twist isnt the one that my 10 year old brother could guess…could it really be that?….i’d be pissed.
BS, no one guessed the twist.
I can’t fucking wait. I haven’t read the book, and I have an idea of what this twist is but I don’t care. Michelle Williams first appearance freaked me out with that weird colored sky
I don’t get it. Should DiCaprio do a Boston accent DIFFERENTLY in order for you to be impressed. Blame the character, not the actor.
And I have no idea what said twist is because I’ve never read the book. I couldn’t begin to figure it out by this trailer, so yeah, weird that someone would. Nothing “obvious” about it.
Anyway, if we’re going to be approaching plot talk, consider this the last time I poke my head in this comment thread.
^Are you sure you don’t know the twist? I was barely paying attention to the trailer and heard the blatant line that gave it away.
If every thriller looked like this, Scorsese’s name or not, we’d live in such a better world.
Surprised that Ruffalo was barely in the trailer – don’t know if that’s a twist or not as I hadn’t read the book, but I had always assumed that he was co-lead with DiCaprio.
And the combo of Von Sydow and Kingsley is so delicious, that alone had me there opening night.
Good trailer. Didn’t know this was another Lehane book though. Haven’t been a big fan of any of the films made from his work yet.
Andrew: Shut up.
That is all. Leaving this thread. NOW.
Yeah, shut up all you twisted twist busters out there. I read the book but I can tell you that Scorsese can take the twist and turn it on its head. That’s all I’m saying. And I read the book. Kris, honestly, I don’t really care about the frickin “O” word. But this is InContention, after all.
I cannot wait! Looks like Scorsese is having some fun with this one! That man never let’s me down. He’s done every genre and keeps reinventing it each time out!
yeesh, If plot twists are so important, go rent a Miss Marple DVD. I guess Psycho was ruined and worthless if you’d already heard about the shower scene.
DiCaprio, Williams, Clarkson, Von Sydow, Kingsley, Ruffalo, Haley…this ensemble looks just as good as the one for “Nine.”
Great novel. I’m still trying to figure out if it’s Lehane’s writing that makes his adaptations so good or if it’s simply the directors behind them.
The trailer… I liked it. Didn’t really capture the eerie tone of the novel, though.
Totally off topic…but does anyone know what the running time is for Public Enemies??
Man, right after I finished this book (which is a hard one to put down) I KNEW that Scorsese was going to knock it out of the ballpark and this trailer just affirms all my thoughts.
This is by far my top 5 most anticipated of the year. Easily.
IMDb is saying 143 minutes, david.
That does not at all look very sophisticated. I know Scorsese did not cut the trailer, but it seemed to be relying a lot on cheap thrills. It’ll likely be good and does look pretty glossy but definitely seems like a lower effort compared to what other auteurs are doing.
The movie doesn’t exactly shout oscar, but you never know. *ahem*Silence of the Lambs*ahem*.
I love that Scorsese likes to be versatile with his films. This has an amazing cast lined up, and it looks fantastic. Can’t wait.
I like the trailer, but does it bother anyone else that Leo is the only actor credited in it?
You guys can quote me on this….Best Picture.
JAB, yes. Can’t believe they didn’t run down the names in this thing.
Alex, I don’t see it. Then again, I don’t see a real front-runner and after The Departed/NCFOM duo, I wouldn’t hold its dark commerciality against its Oscar chances.
I’m with JAB. Not even gonna work in a “with Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley”, guys?
I have to say, this has really grown on me after three viewings.
also, the Best Actor race is going to be ridiculous. I only hope the likes of Peter Sarsgaard and Jeremy Renner can keep up with Leo, Freeman, Viggo, Johnny, and DDL.
oh yeah, and Matt Damon.
Eh, had I not known this was Scorcese, I’d have guessed it was some run of the mill psychological horror stuff we’ve seen before (“Identity” and “Hide and Seek” come to mind).
Thanks Ryan, for bringing your angst to IC. And here I thought it was out of your system.
Ash, i completely agree with you. I said the very same thing with the first post for this topic.
No angst. Just trying to reassure people that this novel and script don’t revolve around a twist as their raison d’ĂȘtre. Relax, it’s not a Charlie Chan movie.
Did knowing Hanna Schmitz was a Nazi ruin The Reader for anybody?
Did knowing Anton Chigurh kills Moss and Carla Jean ruin No Country for Old Men?
I guess I assume you and lots of IC readers… read. You do have a script-to-screen feature here.
The plot of a previously published novel is about as secret as who won WWII.
I came to play nice, Kris. You want me to stir things up? How about you scolding wye for bringing up the “O word” about Shutter Island when you’ve had it charted in several categories on your side bar for months?
Anyway, I thought you threw a fit and left this discussion.
I’ll take your word for it then, since I haven’t read the novel. And I’ve never sought out the plot’s particulars. You make it sound like it’s a staple of pop culture, can’t take two steps without knowing what happens in “Shutter Island.” Come on.
(By the way, since you wouldn’t be caught dead reading IC often, my guess is you can’t tell when I’m throwing a tantrum and when I’m offering dry asshole-ishness, which includes my playful jab at wye.)
I dropped by to see if you’d posted the trailer and hung around to read the interesting comments. This is a movie I care about, so I’m excited to see other people excited.
ok, I misunderstood the playful jab at wye. Sorry about that.
Seems from his reply that he misunderstood you too.
I gathered. I’m not for everyone.
Certainly doesn’t look like your typical Scorsese flick, more like something Frank Darabont would have directed. Anyways, I was riveted, I will certainly see it.
I’m with Kris. First off, my entire family is from New England and Leo’s accent is dead on, as was his NY accent in Rev Road and his Texan accent in The Aviator. Secondly, the fact that Scorsese is doing a psy/thriller means that a 65 year old geius is actually spreading his wings and trying something new, which alone is worth embracing. With this cast, trailer or not, the film is worth checking out.
Looks…amazing — goddam Scorsese is the man…
