Well, it looks every bit as glossy and gaudy as you might have expected (even more so in Apple HD), though it’s a tease, really: there’s little sense of the movie beneath the flash and sizzle. The only player amid the impressive ensemble that is even vaguely showcased is Judi Dench, but if her entire performance is in the amusing, imperiously tart register of that first speech, I sense a seventh nomination in the works. Otherwise, there’s not much here to go on, but enjoy the show:

cruz fantastic!!!!!!!!!!
I have to say, that looks good. Dench on form as usual. Day-Lewis looks pretty damn good as well (who who thought the opposite would be the case?).
That looks just fantastic. The only part that I didn’t like was Fergie singing such a important song and only see Judi Dench speaking. Why the others actors don’t talk?
And Sophia Loren looks just a doll.
I put Dench down on my year in advance predictions and after this it’s looking solid. She sings and she’s never done that before on screen (right?) so seems like a good bet.
It’s a bit worrying that Fergie of all people is only person seen or heard actually singing, but at least they’re not shying away from the VISUAL side of a musical. So many musicals are portrayed as being anything but in the trailers so this one is kind of getting somewhere.
There are some shots in that trailer that are simply GORGEOUS.
Yeah, kick Loren off the predictions list and replace her with Dench. Second supp. actress nominee is a battle between Cruz & Cotillard.
The reason we only hear Fergie singing is possibly because a) everyone’s really bad and they don’t want to scare us off; b) everyone’s really good and they want it to be a killer surprise the first time Day-Lewis opens his mouth and totally drinks the audience’s milkshake.
Judi Dench could probably win the Oscar, even if her whole performance is in the trailer.
I so want this to be good but I am nervious that it looked to much like Chicago and maybe that is okay but the music sounded great and Dench looked funny. I just want to hear Daniel Day Lewis sing and see if that is part of his talents as well.
Dench was indeed the obvious highlight from that trailer. But the movie looks very interesting indeed, classy even.
I hate musicals but i cant wait to see this movies for the DDL and some of the actresses.
I’m freaking out! This looks even better than I imagined!
Wow. This just blowed the top of my head off. This is definitely on my list of films to see this year. I knew what this was about, and was a little excited because it was a Rob Marshall musical, and because of the stellar cast, but… Wow.
There were a lot of breathtaking shots in the trailer. Interesting, classy, and hopefully with all the talent involved in this production, it would also be brillant.
Wow, this looks amazing. Big fan of Chicago, this looks like a sequel
I knew the director of Chicago was remaking 8 1/2 but I had no idea that it would look literally EXACTLY like a combination of those two movies. I love Day-Lewis but I can’t be bothered with this.
I have some of the same worries as chad, although this trailer was phenomenal. It’s just that, 8½ being one of my favorite movies, this kind of feels like a remake. And I don’t want to see a remake of it.
Hopefully it’s more “homage” than “remake,” though, and can separate itself well from Fellini’s classic to becoming its own distinct film.
THIS IS NOT A REMAKE OF “8 1/2”
When will people realise that? It’s an adaptation of the stage musical. Get annoyed at the makers of THAT. Same thing happened with the John Waters fanboys and “Hairspray”, too.
And even if it were a technical remake, what’s the matter? Aren’t people always saying “if you’re going to remake it then do something different with it”? Well they’ve thrown in songs this time! That’s different.
The Legend Kidman looks AMAZING, she’s Bardot-like in this film.
Uhm. I’m shocked at these comments. I could see this being on a contender’s list on paper, but now that there’s visual evidence- this reeks of epic disaster, Showgirls-sized disaster, a total embarrassment for Marshall. Self-indulgent glitterbomb that will be laughed off the screen. At least that’s the whiff I get from the trailer.
I think Fergie is the only one singing because she’s not a suprise in that area. Everyone else would be (except maybe Nicole, she’ll probably be featured in the next trailer) They may be saving everyone else, especially Day-Lewis for the actual film.
