Tom O’Neil’s Emmy intervention with Denis Leary

I don’t know how many fellow “Rescue Me” fans are out there, but if you’ve been watching this season, you know that the FX series is probably hitting its most powerful stretch.  Everyone is on their game, the writing is as crisp as ever and frankly, if ever a case has been glaringly obvious for some Emmy love to finally come actor and writer Denis Leary’s way, this is the year.

Tom O’Neil over at Gold Derby, with his brilliantly obsessive awards analysis, has put up a two-part video webchat with Leary that you have to check out.  It’s fun to watch Leary run through the list of names he’d be up against: Keifer Sutherland, James Gandolfini, Hugh Laurie, Gabriel Byrne.  “Wow, I’m really screwed,” he says.  “Those guys know me and I probably owe them money.”

O’Neil gives some sterling advice on which episodes to submit for Emmy consideration.  Brilliant.  I loved this.  And kudos on the Cobra T-shirt.  Here’s the podcast in two parts:

I stopped watching roughly a third of the way through season 4 when the show seemed to be turning into a massive Leary ego trip. From what I’ve read, it’s recovered a bit this season, but I’m still not sure whether or not I’ll jump back in.

Ego trip? I never got that at all.

    INCREDIBLE SHOW

The last two eps have been devastating in their honesty and pathos. This is Leary’s masterpiece for sure.

And someone give Steven Pasquale an Emmy, some movie roles, and some kudos — guy’s amazing on the show.

OK. You want to know whose been overlooked — Jonathan Rhys Meyers. He has created an incredible/horrifying/but entirely human tyrant in Henry 8. It’s time for people to get past the fact that he doesn’t look like the guy in our history books and acknowlege this amazing performance.

This season is incredibly strong, last night’s episode was great. Leary has always been wonderful but the supporting cast is really getting a chance to shine this year and I hope they all get some awards recognition, however doubtful that may be. Daniel Sunjata and Callie Thorne have been very impressive as of late.

One of the best shows ever on tv! Dr. Denis Leary deserves an Emmy! Really, come on he is fantastic as Tommy Gavin!
