X-Men Origins: Wolverine

The summer officially starts at the multiplexes this weekend with the release of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”  I’m already on the record, so tell us what you thought of the film in the comments section below.  I’m curious how this one is going to play to the masses.

I liked it a little less than you. I won’t retread everything you said, but I will echo the sentiments of everyone who has been quoted as saying that will.i.am should never be allowed anywhere near a movie set ever again.

Plus, the CGI was hilariously bad.

Bleh. I was hoping there would be a chance of redemption after The Last Stand. Sigh. Hugh and Liev did try though!

Weird. I actually didn’t mind will.i.am. I didn’t LIKE him, but consider everything going on around him, he didn’t stick out to me like the sore thumb everyone else is saying.

Being a big fan of “Friday Night Lights,” I like Taylor Kitsch as much as anyone, but any idea why Josh Holloway (Sawyer from “Lost”) wasn’t cast as Gambit? He would have been pitch-perfect, and perhaps served as a small pleasure in an otherwise reprehensibly awful film. It’s inconceivable that any adults could have put this together in an editing room and deemed the results acceptable. I don’t care how butchered it allegedly was by studio honchos.

I thought it was pretty awful, though Hugh Jackman is, as always, a very likeable actor.

movieguy1: From what I’ve heard, Holloway turned it down because it was too close to his “Lost” character.

Ryan Reynolds should’ve had more screentime. And Dominic Monaghan. Loved Liev.

    It was not good.

Thought it was gonna be complete shit, but it turned out to be average at best, so I actually enjoyed it.

I know a movie is bad when even I could have done a better job. It was both botched and bungled.

The movie was decent, it wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t great either. The CGI was real weak by today’s standards, and the story never really seemed to have any build up to conflict, it just played the same exact note the entire time. Still the action was entertaining to watch unfold, as well someone else payed for my ticket to go, so as a whole it wasn’t a waste of time or money, though I’d recommend waiting till it’s on Netflix if you’re spending your own money to see it. Overall it was slightly better than what I was expecting, but it is still a far cry from the first two X-Men films, and is even a slight step down from the third one.

Hmm, I’d give it 2.5/4 stars. Nothing great, nothing truly awful (in my honest opinion). It definitely could have been better, though.

Wow, I’m the only one who loved it. I thought the action was awesome and that it more than made up for the mess that was the second film. Very entertaining, if not perfect. 3.5/4

That’s a joke right, Joel? The second one was a mess?

I’m sure Joel meant 3rd… at least I hope.

I thought the movie was a little above standard. I hated the Roger Rabbit Claws. they should have just cut that scene out.
Hugh and Liev were great. But the movie seemed rushed and sloppily put together. Will.I.Am didnt bother me at all. i thought he was good actually. honestly im not sure if i had any problems with the acting…
They needed more development for the original team at the beginning. I never really felt like they had any connection or bond.
The gun shot memory loss was lame. especially because when Jean Grey is showing his x-rays to the X-Men, we would have seen the bullet holes in his head in the first movie… Maybe FOX will George Lucas them in for the 25 year anniversary Bluray release.

    Awful.

Oh, HA, oops. Yes, I meant the third. I need to fire my typist.

The second film is a cornerstone of the genre. This one was my second favorite behind that one, I think.

As a fan of every X-men film (yes even The Last Stand, although it’s certainly the weakest of the bunch), I can honestly say that film is nowhere near as good as the others. The actors did what they could with what they were given, even Will.I.Am did an okay job (not great, not awful). The CGI was ridiculous and I couldn’t believe how many characters they wasted, if they ha cut about 20 characters out of this film it would’ve been much better. I’m not one of those people who has to bitch and moan about things not staying close to the source material, but i think that might’ve been a better plan for this film. Now, with all that said, I will definitely be buying this when it comes out on DVD, just to have every movie in the series (I did the same thing with Spiderman 3). Maybe by then my disappointment in the film will have subsided and I’ll be able to enjoy it as a simple popcorn flick with a few good action scenes and some seriously talented actors doing their best to make it work.

Starts out promising, staggers with the introduction of Kayla and never recovers. CGI was laughable. Liev Schreiber rocked, though.

It was a mess. A bunch of known actors making pointless cameos, bad CGI, even worse screenplay… even Jackman and Schreiber weren’t all that good, almost on auto-pilot (although they brought SOME dignity to their roles). A bad summer kickoff.

I thought the film was just as good and just as bad as X-Men & X-Men: The Last Stand. The only thing that those two films have a step above are the special effects, but as for story & screenplay, it’s just as bad (especially Last Stand). Overall, flawed, but worthy. X2 still rules.

If someone were to make a definitive film about feces, X-men Origins: Wolverine would be pretty damn definitive.

    The Dark Knight = GOLD.

    Wolverine = CRAP-FILLED VAGINA.

Why do people grade out of 4? It is just ridiculous. Grading out of 5 stars is a little better, assuming you grade with half stars.

Trouble with 4 stars, is that 3 stars means everything from above average to nearly perfect. And if you grade in half stars, why not just grade out of 10. Doesn’t make sense to me.

  26. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

Adam: I grade on a four star scale because I think anything more nuanced is arrogant and silly, to be quite honest. Five stars, letter grading, it’s all silly. I’m not trying to give a definitive “grade” when I review a film. My aim is more to give a general idea of it’s overall quality and my actual review will give you the nuance. (And I use half-stars, by the way.)

If that’s “ridiculous” so be it.

Thought it was going to be terrible going into it. Was surprised that it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be so I ended up somewhat enjoying it. Better than X3 but that’s not saying a lot. Jackman and Schreiber were great, the action was a times good, but the CGI was way too corny (especially everything outside at the power plant). Xavier showing up though was pretty clutch though, but the entire time I was watching the movie I couldn’t help but thinking how much more fun I’d have watching X2

I think what helped it most was all the negative internet buzz. I thought this was going to be the worst movie of all time. then I saw it and thought it was a sliver below average…
When i went to Spiderman 3 I thought it was going to be the best movie of all time. I thought it sucked, probably more so than it deserved.
What we really need out there are Dark Knight movies. when the hype is huge and the movie performs. those are top notch Superhero films.

The fact that so many comments begin with “I thought it was gonna be the worst movie ever before I went” is puzzling. I usually skip the movies I think are going to be the worst ever. Like this one.

    Kris,

‘Ridiculous’ was over-stating it obviously, but since you use half grades it didn’t really apply to you anyway. I don’t really get the magazines that grade out of 4 and don’t use half stars. There must be such a massive diversity in quality within each bracket that it renders it meaningless.

I think a 10 point scale is about right, which with 4 stars, if you start at zero and include half stars, you bascially have.

i still haven’t seen this, so my question is:
Is it worth it? I’m a much bigger x-men fan than star wars…which should i see this coming weekend?

Loved Liev and he was actually the only reason why I wanted to see the movie. I’m pretty happy to report that he didn’t disappoint.

The CGI was really weak by today’s standards–I mean, I couldn’t believe that there were scenes where I could so obviously point out the CGI. Tsk. The material could have been better, but I appreciated the fact that they tied it up with the earlier series.
