I wrote about this trailer after being surprised by it at the cinema almost two weeks ago. Now it’s finally appeared online, you can see for yourselves. I’m still a little uncertain of the brittle, faintly campy comic tone present here — Colette’s novella (which I’ll get into when our Page to Screen series begins) is a rather more delicate, melancholy animal. But it looks like a classy outing all round. We’ll see.

and the oscar for best costume design goes to…
That black hat when Pfeiffer first arrives probably would’ve won it for them if the rest of the duds weren’t so gorgeous.
Looks good.
I wasn’t aware Bates was in this, she lights up the trailer every time with her hearty laugh. I don’t know about the source material, but the trailer appears to be announcing a delightfully cheeky film. I’m certainly looking forward!
I think it looks like the first period film, that is actually entertaining to see. Though the trailer is lite, I hear its sad in the end. Dramedy.
It looks fine.
I wish I could get into these period pieces, but every time i try to watch them I get incredibly bored. This looks no different, no matter how much Pfeiffer and Bates bring to the table.
Anyone know of one that might not bore me as much? I really don’t want to shut out an entire genre like this.
I don’t know what you’ll think (or if you’ve already seen it), but I find “Howards End” particularly engaging and wonderfully entertaining.
I’m eager to see Michelle. Nice to see her back in a REAL LEADING ROLE. Hasn’t seen that since What Lies Beneath.
Shrug? I can see this going nowhere.
“I think it looks like the first period film that is actually entertaining to see.”
A wild exaggeration, surely? ‘Period’ is a very broad bracket, after all.
And yes, “Howards End” is a masterpiece.
Saw the film in Berlin during the Berlinale last month, and Michelle Pfeiffer brings the kind of performance we have so dearly missed since her days of “Married to the Mob” and “The Fab Baker Boys”. Oscar seems too far to call (“Cheri” is a pure comedy after all), but I guess GG Comedy/Musical for Pfeiffer is a lock.
Give the Oscar to Michelle right now!
I seriously hope that this will bring back these types of movies–period pieces and James Ivory. It’s like comfort food, filmwise. The type of movies that got me into “film” and start thinking critically of movies.
It looks like Kathy Bates will steal this ‘show’.
Looks good and promising.
I should were a monocle and a top hat if I watch this movie.
is it a comedy ?
can someone confirm that this is a comedy ? The trades seemed to suggest it’s a drama
its a dramedy.
