I’d have to agree here. I find Swank to be extremely overrated.
if Hilary Swank wins another Oscar I will probably be arrested for a large quantity of my belongings being thrown out the window of my room onto the busy streets of Boston
I thought she deserved her first Oscar and I wasn’t as annoyed of her second Oscar as well.
But I DO agree that it would be pretty insane if she gets a third Oscar considering Streep only has ONE lead actress win.
Then again, if she DOES give the best female leading performance this year, then so what if she already has two Oscars?
When is the last time someone has won 3 Oscars within a decade? Walter Brennan?
i’m honored, really.
I think 2004 was REALLY thin for lead actresses, and as much as I hate M$B, I can understand the win there. The Boys Don’t Cry win was well-deserved, though catch me on a different day and I’ll say Bening should have won.
I think Swank has simply been fortunate.
but in all seriousness. She deserved the first one (barely) over Annette Bening, but her win for Million Dollar Baby over Winslet in Eternal Sunshine was inexcusable if you ask me.
I would think it’s Pfeiffer’s year if Cheri is singled out. Carey Mulligan, the girl that blew the roof off at Sundance is too new. Cruz just won for a foreign language film, sorry Pedro.
Doesn’t Annette Bening have an Oscar Wilde film coming up?
Imagine the sting of losing Best Actress three times to the same person! Now that hurts.
god, i can’t believe she won two before Kate won one.
I personally really liked Million Dollar Baby, but Im a big Eastwood fan. I think Bennet deserved to win over Swank and I enjoyed her performance in million but Im not to familiar with eternal sunshine
In my opinion, she did deserve both Oscars (although Annette Bening deserved it too for American Beauty).
My friends and I have an ongoing joke when she’s in a new movie….is she playing a woman in this one? If so, forget it. When we saw the preview for AMELIA on Sunday, we all agreed a third nomination was a lock since she’s playing a “man”. Haha
However, a third acting Oscar I think is only reserved for legends. 1 win for anyone is plausible. 2 wins and the Academy considers you A-list. 3 wins is simply in another stratosphere. If it’s taken this long for Meryl to get a third, Hilary will either never get it or have to wait 25 years herself.
The only Oscar I feel Meryl actually deserved over the actual winner was in 02 for Adaptation over Catherine Zeta Jones and I’m being generous because Julianne Moore was equally deserving.
So fraustrating, I think Meryl deserved to win in Doubt. Anyway, the quest goes again, let’s see if she gets nominated for Julie & Julia!
Hillary Swank who?
I am absolutely shocked that so many of you are saying Annette Bening deserved the Academy Award for American Beauty. I thought her performance was PAINFULLY awful, roughly comparable to Sean Penn’s ham-fisted turn in Mystic River.
While I agree with pretty much everything everyone has said, I’m having serious doubts about this movie…I really don’t know if the director has proven herself. Remember how Vanity Fair was supposed to be a lock for Reese Witherspoon and then turned out to be a disaster??
However, I believe the story of Amelia is powerful and can be done well. I’m also amazed that it has taken this long to get to the big screen…I believe there are two possible outcomes…either she ease her way into another nomination (but will not win b/c the academy will not vote for her to win 3/3) or she will get rave reviews, but be left off the shortlist since we all know how the academy likes to play their own games…
…either way, I foresee two long overdue actors getting their prizes, Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer. In other news, I’m totally not a fan of this site’s prediction of Saoirse is a pipe dream…
Annette Bening’s turn in American Beauty was placed in a wrong category. I think it was a supporting role. Not that only it was a secondary character in the film, her performance was without nuance. But, I should say the performance itself is typical a winning supporting role.
But in the end, Hillary Swank’s performance in Boys Don’t Cry wasn’t that memorable for me–I can’t remember scene!!! Ask me if I remember Bening? Yes!
It would be lovely to see Michelle Pfeifer and Saiorse Ronan be nominated together in the best actress category. They were co-stars in a straight to DVD movie this/last year, as a mother and a daughter living an L.A. life in Hollywood.
The only thing that should matter is who gives the best performance, and if Hillary Swank is the one who has the best performance this year, she should be recognised with an Oscar…
I also think three oscars is too much for her, both annette benning and kate winslet should have won over her but life’s not always fair…, and Swank losing an Oscar, for a deserving work , only because she previously has won twice wouldn’t be fair neither
I’d be very dissapointed as well. Swank is totally overrated. I’ve never really liked her performances.
Swank won both her Oscars in extremely weak years. I’d have gone for her in ’99 but for Winslet or Sandino-Moreno in ’04.
Bette Davis won 2 Oscars early in her career for for arguably her 2 least deserving nominations. Her greatest work would be passed over perhaps because of those 2 wins.
Hey gang, Sally Filed has two Oscars for best actress, Meryl Streep does not — Hilary Swank has two for best actress, Meryl Streep does not — Jodie Foster has two for best actress, Meryl does not — can you feel the fucking injustice of this folks????? It makes me ill…
Jodie Foster deserves two Oscars! Sally and Hilary, maybe not. But Foster definitely.
Why is everyone talking like Meryl Streep is the be all end all? The world can go on spinning without her being the most honored actress in the world.
I don’t see Pfeiffer and Freeman losing. And I think Eastwood’s film is the most probable for best picture. Nine will be loved but Chicago has already won. They won’t give the award to another Marshall musical. Look at me, so sure so soon. :p
I really don’t see Pfieffer scoring a win for Cheri. Granted, I haven’t seen the film but from what I know of it (a period drama full of romantic seduction), this role may not be the kind with enough meat in it. It sounds like it’s really harkening back to Glenn Close in Dangerous Liasons.
Swank deserved it for Boys Don’t Cry, and a nomination was worthy for MDB, but Kate or Imelda totally deserved it way more. Plus, Swank hasn’t done anything major or notable other than the two films she won Best Actress for.
I don’t know if Sally Field is a fair comparison: after all, they like her, they really like her.
i don’t know, i thought The Core and P.S. I Love You were pretty great…………………
ROFL to JAB
Don’t forget Swank’s brilliance in The Next Karate Kid.
If she deserves it, give it to her. Simple as that.
Winslet, Delpy, Kidman or Thurman deserved it more than Swank did her year. (I didn’t see Bening or Staunton’s perfs.)
2004 was an incredibly strong year for actresses, IMO. Swank was very good, but not at the same level as any of the aforementioned goddesses.
***after all, they like her, they really like her.***
No, they like her, right now they like her. She never said “really like.”
Swank deserved it for “Boys Don’t Agree”, I think most people will not be bothered by that win at all – but 2004? Ugh. Nicole Kidman’s finest work to date (but, admittedly, in SUCH an un-Oscary movie), Imelda Staunton’s incredibly “who IS this lady?” perf, Kate Winslet’s surprising and blissfully beautiful perf, Julie Delpy’s pure romanticism, Jamie Lee Curtis’ full throttle comedic brilliance… but they gave it to a previous winner for a Clint Eastwood movie. It’s more boring than undeserved. I can understand the nomination, but the win was hyperbole (I think).
I’m predicting a nomination next year for “Amelia” but no win. Seems like an Angelina Jolie/”Changeling” situation to me.
Oh, Swank is extremely overrated. She didn’t deserve any of those Oscars.
Hopefully Meryl Streep will win soon –either with Julie and Julia, the Norah Eprhon project or Dewey. Kate Winslet robbed her this year though.
Personally, I think Swank’s performance in “Boys Don’t Cry” is one of the greatest ever rewarded in the Best Actress category. Bening doesn’t even come close.
She’s strong in “Million Dollar Baby” too, though it’s the kind of role that stacks the audience’s sympathies so aggressively in her favour that I’m not sure how much she brought to it. Winslet would have been my pick from the 2004 nominees, but Staunton and Moreno arguably had more challenging roles too. (And I’m in full agreement with Glenn — between “Birth” and “Dogville,” Kidman was THE actress of 2004.)
Overall, I don’t have a problem with Swank having two Oscars. It’s not like one of them was for horrific work. I’m more bothered by the fact that Renee Zellweger has even one.

You got it.
why on earth did i type “Boys Don’t Agree”. haha. such a bizarre typo.
You know, somehow, somewhere, there’s a studio, a screenwriter, and a director fed up with Meryl Streep not having a third Oscar. When they find the material, they’ll call her, and she’ll do it, and she’ll win an Oscar for it.
I just hope it happens soon.
Eunice, I think that was the case with “Doubt,” no? As calculated a piece of performance Oscar bait as there was all year.
Shame it wasn’t all that good. ;)
