Christopher Nolan’s next film: ‘Inception’

Written by

Christopher NolanAs expected, Christopher Nolan’s next film will not be a sequel to “The Dark Knight.”  He will instead go into production on “Inception,” described in the breaking Hollywood Reporter story as “a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind.”  Here are the usual kisses from the studio:

“Chris Nolan is a visionary filmmaker who continually raises the bar with each movie he makes,” Warner Bros. Pictures Group president Jeff Robinov said. “We are thrilled to be collaborating again with him and Emma on this exciting new motion picture.”

Sadly we don’t have any information at the moment, but hey, I’m excited.  Nolan took a break from the Caped Crusader after “Batman Begins” to focus on the Christopher Priest adaptation “The Prestige,” a film that took a while to grow on me.  But it certainly gave the director a chance to take a deep breath before diving back into Batman, and really, if that’s what it takes to get a film like “The Dark Knight” out of him, I welcome “Inception” with open arms.

I want Bale in this, too! Why not!?

    Bring it the fuck on!

Excited to see a Nolan original scripted story again. Instantly at the top of my list of films I’m excited for in 2010.

That said, I wouldn’t mind one last trip to Nolan’s Gotham. And I’m dying to see what he and the Peoples come up with for The Prisoner.

Great! I would see any film Chris Nolan or Paul Thomas Anderson make.

    Can’t wait for more details.

Sure, this is only good. Batman 3 won’t be released before 2011 anyhow.

    Kris,

Just curious about your comment about “The Prestige”, and your opinion of it. What are your thoughts on it now, and how have they changed?

drbenway: When I first saw the film, I was not at all convinced by the payoff. In some ways, I still feel a bit cheated by it. But what has always been apparent is my respect for Nolan’s sense of structure.

No one puts narratives together like he does, and though he shouldn’t be expected to be the “broken narrative” guy, I was slightly disappointed that “The Dark Knight” was just a point-a-to-point-b yarn. But obviously it worked out just fine.

In any case, I also wasn’t particularly convinced with Hugh Jackman’s performance in the film, and that’s still the case. But I could never argue with the artistry (specifically, Pfister’s best work to date). And I’m happy someone took a stab at Priest’s book, because it’s quite the dense story.

I thought Jackman and Bale were both good, though Bale was definitely more convincing. Bowie did a really good job too and obviously Caine was great as usual.

I will say that I’m kind of disappointed that Nolan’s next movie will be another summer action flick. Yeah, it’ll be a high quality action flick like the Batman movies, but I think he’s too talented to use it only on that type of film. I am, however, very pleased that WB isn’t just using him for the Batman movies. The two parties clearly have a good relationship.

“The Prestige” remains my favorite Nolan film. I think it’s stellar in every way (save Scarlett, part of Nolan’s recent lacking of decent female characters).

I am in for this. No Jonathan as co-writer?

The Prestige is also my favorite of his films. I, like Kris, felt cheated by the payoff. But after a couple more viewings, it just keeps getting better, which is something I did not expect.

Can’t wait for this. Anything this guy touches is gold. What a badass title too!

The Prestige was brilliant IMO. I read the book before hand and was still impressed that Nolan pulled it off so beautifully. His direction was assured and confident in The Prestige, and that definitely continued with The Dark Knight.

    Needs to change the title.

Haha whoops. Allow me to elaborate. Too similar to INSOMNIA, boring title, and he’s got way too many one word titles already.

Not as bad as Aronofsky’s The Fountain, The Wrestler and The Fighter.

Thanks for elaborating on your thoughts on ‘The Prestige’, Kris. I think the nature of the twist is ultimately thematic, but that doesn’t necessarily make it satisfying. I suppose maybe it’s a question of how much the rest of the film hinges on that twist.

… and by “the nature of the twist is ultimately thematic” I just mean, given the ideas put forward here, the twist is very logical. And obviously it would (I imagine, having not read it) work better in the book.

why does the movie title make such a big deal? I’m pretty sure if Citizen Kane was retitled “Big Fat Ass Dying” people would still hale it as one of the best of the century.

If doing a Batman movie is what it takes to get a film like “The Prestige,” I shall thank “The Dark Knight” in retrospect for giving us “Inception.”

Mr. Big you’re not being serious, you know you’re not being serious, we know you’re not being serious, so let’s move on.

I’m with BurmaShave here: “Inception” is one of those generic thriller-style titles, like “Deception” or “Duplicity,” that kind of makes me glaze over.

Titles are important. Not film-altering, true, but potentially perception-altering. When I work on a script, it usually takes me ages to settle on a title — I’m fussy that way.

I liked Prestige a lot and think this is good, it gives his mind a break from Batman and then he will come back even stronger and maybe there this trilogy will get betters with each chapter (something not done too often).

I think the title is fine, Chris likes short titles, and we know he can deliver the goods and title probably wont matter that much. It def wont matter in terms of box office, since once they mention “director of TDK” people will be there

Well they only refer to the script as Inception, the movie may well end up being called something entirely else.

But if it doesn’t I won’t care that much. Inception might just be the RIGHT (in addition to actual) title for the movie.

I loved Prestige, and I’m looking forward to anything else Nolan does. This included.

There is a common misconception that Batman Begins “got” Nolan The Prestige. At a glance this seems to be the case, so I don’t fault anyone for thinking it, but in fact The Prestige was in development since before Memento was released, and was green lit and ready to go before Nolan started on Batman Begins. He didn’t want to have to rush through production on The Prestige to get to Batman.

… and if someone were to write a book on Nolan’s oeuvre to date, they could easily title it “Architecture of the Mind”. I actually wonder if that’s Nolan’s phrase. The guy builds labyrinths.
