How we did

I’ll let the other contributors’ picks speak for themselves, and they’re more than welcome to pipe in with notes if they like, but here’s my tally.

Coming off probably my best year yet last year, I didn’t do great.  I only nailed one category 100 percent (Best Film Editing).  There were more 3/5s popping up this year than in years past, but so it goes.  We all hit speed bumps.

I correctly guessed 73 of the 102 nominees I predicted, which is, what, I don’t know.  74 if you count Winslet, but for the wrong movie (which you shouldn’t…I wouldn’t).  Percentages escape me.

The somewhat unexpected calls I made were “Slumdog Millionaire” showing up in Best Sound Editing and the “Defiance” nod for Best Original Score.  A lot of people seemed to jump of the Melissa Leo boat recently too, but I knew she was solid.  The acting branch was in love with that performance, and when you have someone like Dustin Hoffman out there pushing your cause, you’re in good shape.

Also, I had a conversation last night with a sound mixer friend who told me “Wanted” was the best sound job of the year.  And it shows up in both categories.  Go figure.

Who am I most happy for?  Michael Shannon.  One of the good guys.

Anyway, those are my stats.  What about yours?

I correctly predicted 74 of 97 nominees (I didn’t bother guessing the shorts).

Went 100% in Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing, Visual Effects, and Foreign Language Film (usually my worst category).

I correctly predicted 72 of the 97 nominees I guessed My 100%’s were Picture, Adapted Screenplay,Editing and Visual Effect. Missed 10 categories by one.

68%. Pathetic. I only predicted the top eight categories. Was perfect on adapted screenplay; hit 4/5 for picture, director, actor, and supporting actor; 3/5 for supporting actress; 2/5 for lead actress, and butchered original screenplay (just one of five).

Here’s a question: I predicted Kate Winslet for “The Reader” for Best Supporting Actress. Do I get half a point?

You didn’t hit Supporting Actress 100% — You missed Tomei.

The nominee list I read didn’t have “Defiance” down for cinematography. Are there conflicting reports?

Xavier: Should have said lead actress, sorry.

And really, that’s wrong too, because I guessed Winslet for the wrong film.

Worst showing for me in a while. Eesh.

After knowing the nominations, I cannot understand why I spend my time in shits like Oscars.

Not is only the snubbed of TDK in pic/director/adapted screenplay and original score , choices like Jolie instead of Sally Hawkins, Pitt instead of DiCaprio or Del Toro, Courtney Hunt instead Woody Allen or Jenny Lumet, Howard instead of Aronofsky or the absence of Gomorrah (previously shut out) and Bruce Springsteen make me disappointing even when these are typical AMPAS mistakes year by year. In 2007 when The Departed and Scorsese won I think they began to change their way to appreciate films but that was just a fluke maybe.

If only I would have put Winslet down for The Reader for lead I would have done much better. I had that feeling of a tilt to The Reader and should have acting on it in that category. Personally, I didn’t mind the Dark Knight snub to much.

The Main 8 categories I was 29/40… Yikes! My worst year of the 6 I’ve done this. 4/5 in everything but the Winslet tricky nomination and I got massacred with a 2/5 in Original Screenplay.

My dream selections come Oscar Sunday would be Mickey Rourke and Marissa Tomei winning the respective categories. I hoped for The Wrestler to be the shock selection if The Dark Knight was gonna get the shaft and I really hoped Robert Siegel would get a nomination in Original Screenplay. Oh well. Last year I cheered for Into the Wild and came up lame as well. If you made my favorite film of the year… you can pretty much guarantee your not getting your name called at 5:AM when noms come out.
