Now THAT’s what I call crashing the party. I don’t know how you nominate “Iron Man” over “The Dark Knight” in a category such as this, but nice to see someone standing up and being original.
The 2008 USC Scripter nominees are:
“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”
“Iron Man”
“The Reader”
“Revolutionary Road”
“Slumdog Millionaire”
I kind of expect Mr. Roth to win here, even if “Button” is beaten out by “Slumdog” at the Oscars. But we’ll see. The winner will be announced at the Jan. 30 gala, which I’ll be attending. If you recall, this will be the first year the USC Libraries will unveil the winner at the actual show.
As for Oscar, the WGA will be the first true road to the adapted screenplay category. The guild that stirred up a storm a year ago will announce its nominees on Thursday. Could “Iron Man” pop up here again? Time will tell.

Wow, that’s gotta be a joke. Iron Man? Are you kidding me? The last 20 minutes of that movie are terrible. I’ll tell you what these nominations mean, if anything. That David Hare is seriously in the mix for Adapted Screenplay. I liked The Reader more than most but I still didn’t love it. However, after hearing Hare speak about the film and explain his approach to adapting Schlink’s book , it really made me appreciate the film on a whole different level. I think he’s in along with Beaufoy, Roth and Peter Morgan, and hopefully either Shanley or the Nolans will take that 5th slot, or a left-field foreign choice like Tell No One, The Class, Let the Right One In or Gomorrah. I’ll be really surprised if Haythe gets nominated for an Oscar. The RR script just wasn’t. quite. there.
The Iron Man thing is surprising because I thought Iron Man’s script was improvised mainly by RDJ himself on set.
Still can’t quite get over it. Iron Man? Even if Beaufoy and Roth are the only sure things in this category in the Oscar race, even if the Academy decides Doubt and Frost/Nixon are too cut-and-pasted, even if voters didn’t like The Reader as much as I did, can you really say Iron Man was a better scripts than The Dark Knight? There’s no way. So give the 3rd spot to the Nolans. That leaves 2 spots and look at those foreign films. I think Let the Right One In and Gomorrah are both more deserving than Iron Man and Revolutionary Road. I guess it’s cool that the USC Scripter folks went their own way and made an original pick, but is it really cause for excitement when that pick is ridiculous and so many other quality films are overlooked? Iron Man? Hmmm…. Fun movie I suppose (thanks to RDJr. more than anything) but award winner? I don’t think so.
How is this surprising? It’s just silly/stupid.
The Iron Man script is horrid; Robert Downey Jr. was the whole movie.
plays and foreign language films are not eligible for the USC Scripter.
Good for Iron Man. About time something surprised us.
I do wonder if Iron Man will, in some way, hinder TDK’s Oscar chances. Iron Man will obviously not be nominated, but it might steal a few votes from it here and there (which it clearly did tonight).
[…] I remember last year when “Zodiac†was nominated for the USC Scripter award (for the best screenplay adapted from a book, comic or short story) I was thrilled that finally it was getting some much deserved love in one of the many categories it should have. They are the people who honoured “Children of Men†and “Notes on a Scandal.†This year, we have “Iron Man.†Which makes me throw up in my mouth a little. At least it is original, I guess. Of course, there is “Revolutionary Road†too which, if there is any justice in the award world, should take home the award. Here’s to hoping, the winner shall be unveiled on the 30th of January. My money is on either “Button” or “Slumdog” at this point though. [In Contention] […]
So wait a sec Mikey, an adaptation of a play makes it ineligible? Really? I didn’t know that, my bad. Still think The Dark Knight was much better written, and I’m not even an apologist.
Agreed. The last act of IRON MAN is terrible, and the film is completely overrated. Hardly a better script than THE DARK KNIGHT, or many films from last year.
[…] adapted field is a little easier to manage. But I wouldn’t look to USC’s typically road-less-traveled nominees for much of a barometer for the adapted screenplay race, however. That’s folly of a […]
