Coulda been a countenda

It’s on AMC, so I figured I’d go hunting down that original teaser for Michael Bay’s “Pearl Harbor,” featuring excerpts from Hans Zimmer’s “The Thin Red Line” score.  Remember when this was one of the coolest trailers ever?  Then the movie…dear lord, the movie.  I should really change the channel.  Anyway…

say what you want about the film overall, but that action scene is absolutely staggering

and that’s still a great trailer

Hey, at least Bay knows what he is now — a freakin’ Hasbro toy vehicle.

‘staggering’ is a bit generous, I’ll give you it’s easily the best scene in the movie, but the film sucks bigtime — the mission that takes up the last 30-40 minutes is such a waste of time…

the trailer looks good because there isn’t really a hint of the crap melodrama that would be the whole movie

That piece of music is one of the best score bits ever composed. It’s certainly my favorite Zimmer bit. Now when will they finally release a proper version of his brilliant Pearl Harbor score and while they’re at it the Thin Red Line recording sessions too…not even a bootleg of the latter.

The first third and the last third are heinous… but the middle third (the attack) is wonderful film. Stuff like that is really all Michael Bay has shown us he can do great… and he delivered there.

I remember being so stoked for this movie and walking out of the theater after seeing it utterly shocked at how bad it was. I actually wanted to leave during the movie, but since I was there with 7 other people, I didn’t really have a choice.

Pearl Harbor is on my Worst Movies of All Time list along with Armageddon and Bad Boys II. When Bay is good, he’s good; when he’s bad, he’s absolutely bad.

One of my friends thinks that Pearl Harbor is one of the best movies of the decade.

Yeah there’s a lot of people falling for Michael Bay’s films. It’s understandable, he’s had huge success. He re-invented the modern action flick together with Bruckheimer, Zimmer & Co. I mean The Rock and Con Air are some of my biggest guilty pleasures. Such fun to watch.
The action in PH is of course superb, but the rest is just too much trying to be Titanic II.
