Clint to be named Hollywood Director of the Year

The 12th Annual Hollywood Awards will honor Clint Eastwood with the Hollywood Director of the Year Award.

The Oscar-winning director and producer will receive the award at the festival’s Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony in Beverly Hills on Oct. 27.

“Just when you think Clint Eastwood is about to take a breath, he shoots two films in a year and starts prepping a third, and barely thinks any of that is worth mentioning. He brings dignity, grace, humility, humor, quiet confidence and a sense of ease to a profession that is in sore need of all of those virtues,” said screenwriter, director and Awards co-chair Paul Haggis in a statement.

Not that Haggis should be doing anything BUT kissing Eastwood’s ass.  Good to hear it, though.  Probably the first step toward Oscar this year.

These awards still baffle me — have they actually seen “Gran Torino,” or are they just giving it to him on reputation alone?

I still have a feeling the Academy may pass this year. A Best Actor nod seems more likely to me.

I don’t even think Clint has seen Gran Torino.

Well, to be fair, isn’t the writer of “Milk” getting an award from the same organization as well? And the director of “Doubt”? Nobody’s seen either of these movies either. At least “Changeling” has its boosters.

I do agree, though, that these awards are pointless. Every year, they honor people whose film haven’t been seen (or even finished). They confused me.

Am I they only one who doesn’t think every single film Eastwood touches is a classic?

I could barely get through “Letters from Iwo Jima,” “Flags of Our Fathers” was choppy and sappy.

”Mystic River,” “Million Dollar Baby” and “Bridges of Madison County” featured outstanding acting (which is expected from the likes of Streep, Penn and Freeman).

Just maybe we can wait until these 2 films come out before we once again kneel down in the church of Eastwood!

No, Patrick, you’re not alone. He’s made a number of really fine films (including some undervalued gems like “A Perfect World”), but the WWII pair left me pretty cold, to be honest. And “The Bridges of Madison County,” to me, is pure schlock.

I do like the look of “Changeling,” however, provided he can rein in Jolie’s excesses. The prospect “Gran Torino” isn’t getting me very excited, though.

And yeah, Liz, I don’t understand the point of these awards either. Oscar pundits like us also try and guess which films will be the year’s standouts, but at least we don’t hand out awards on that basis!

Let’s hope the Best Actor category will not be filled with “career achievement” nods. There are so many other candidates (Jenkins, Mortensen) whose work should be recognized.
