Check it out in Quicktime here.
Streep looks intense, of course. She probably remains the film’s strongest shot at Oscar glory. We can’t be sure whether Viola Davis’s role was expanded enough from the brief stage presence to grab a supporting nomination, while Philip Seymour Hoffman seems a little out of place to me. But it could be a stellar performance edited awkwardly for the trailer and result in some major notices at the end of the day.

Holy wow: Streep looks phenomenal. And I must say, Philip Glass’s music worked very well; I kind of wish he could have been able to score it. No matter, Shore will be fine I’m sure.
I have a feeling this will get acting nods for at least three out of Meryl, PSH, amy adams, and viola davis, and whichever gets left out will have been robbed.
Adams looks a little fly-on-the-wall-ish to me. Which, as I understand, is the nature of the role on stage as well? (I haven’t seen it.)
Looks like a bunch of great performances. Can we throw PSH’s name in for supporting actor now? Much better trailer than “The Soloist.”
Much different sell than “The Soloist.”
this has definitely just shot up my list,
my five for best picture right now are
Milk
Doubt
Changeling
The Dark Knight
Revolutionary Road
with Milk taking the gold
That was… bizarre? A bunch of interesting, reasonably well-acted scenes, awkwardly edited together. I just kept waiting for something truly gripping to happen, but the trailer just sort of… petered out?
I get that they are two completely different movies, I’m just talking trailer-wise. If it had less accomplished actors in it, “The Soloist” trailer makes it look like a Hallmark movie of the week. It struck me as trying to be powerful or uplifting and failing. This trailer is much more effective. I guess I’m just comparing the two since they were both just released.
JAB: Doesn’t it seem a little stagey to you to be such a sure bet for a best Picture nod? I feel similar to Markku here. Lots of solid performances, though. It seems…
I agree, Markku — there’s something really muted and disjointed about the whole thing. I appreciate that they haven’t tried to jazz it up with a standard slick Hollywood trailer, but there’s no discernible rhythm or style to it.
And those concerns about staginess aren’t going anywhere — not that that issue ever really bothered me.
Streeps looks very good, as one might expect — simply going on this evidence, I sense that the film’s awards prospects lie with her alone.
Thought it was a great trailer. Steep looks powerful, as to be expected. Plenty of PSH shouting moments it seems.
i mean i guess it might not be the academy’s taste, but it looks like what i look for in a movie.
JAB: My lord, that’s a grim Best Picture list. (I’m not saying that makes it less likely, mind — 2005 was no barrel of laughs.)
I think something more hopeful might slip in — Slumdog Millionaire, at a stretch Happy-Go-Lucky…
For me, this trailer actually helped me to strike Doubt from the Best Pic contenders list. But who knows?
PSH steals the show in the trailer.
i’m pulling for Happy-Go-Lucky for original screenplay, and maybe (BIG maybe) best actress, but i have it second for both to Rachel Getting Married.
Guy: I really don’t see this as BP material either. Streep, Hoffman (if he goes supporting) and maybe screenplay, but that’s it.
I don’t know…
apart from Meryl, I don’t think this is going to blow anyone away. I hope I’m wrong.
A very powerful trailer that did an excellent job of utilizing some humor and taking the focus OFF the fact that the movie is about a kid getting molested by a priest and makes it into a war of sorts between streep and hoffman’s characters. It did feel a bit choppy in a couple of parts but I didn’t feel it “petered out at the end.” It left the viewer, quite appropriately, with doubt. Who’s telling the truth? Who is not? Who will win the battle?
The Soloist trailer brought tears to my eyes. Looks like a helluva story.
Ok, Kris….I think you can add Streep to your lead actress predictions. She looks fantastic!
Good trailer.
I really liked Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Streep? I don’t know if I liked what I saw. For a few moments I saw Miranda Priestley dressed as a nun. “I was not inviting a guessing game, sister…”
But she’ll get nominated, that’s for sure.
Sean: She was only out a week. ;)
there is some violin music at the end of the trailer and I know that I’ve heard it before, either in another trailer or in another movie, can anyone tell me what the hell it is, it’s driving me nuts!
Interesting, the middle of the trailer sounds unmistakable like Glass and I think his sound worked very well for the movie. Alas, as dissapointed as I am for the switch, Shore is a great replacement and I would love to see him score a nod outside of his LOTR work.
Now for the trailer itself: it made the movie feel small and not in a good way. It also didn’t help that the trailer itself was quite long. Right now it doesn’t seem like a strong BP contender for me though it may change.
As for Streep, I am not particularly impressed by this particular performance. She is rearded enough and in a year where she was by far the worst thing in Mamma Mia I think the Academy should let this one go and pick another worthy actress for a change. Kristin Scott Thomas maybe?
I think it looks pretty poorly cast quite honestly.
They ALL seemed out of place to me save Viola Davis. I hope her role is bigger.
Why couldn’t they have taken the chance on Cherry Jones? I normally love Streep, but this looks like a poorly directed film, and no one is infallible when it comes to that.
Poor Angelina Jolie — she only gets a day to bask in the supposed glory of her trailer before Streep and Winslet muscle in with evidence of their own hardcore thesping. Why do I sense at least one of them won’t make the cut?
I still think this is Winslet’s year for some reason.
I still think Jolie looks 100% more compelling than Streep, though.
Have you seen the Scott Thomas film? Being boring, beyond slow. She is very good, but the film, ugh!
Kris, only a week…true :)
Adams looks meek and simple like in every other role – the character is the same
Kris, for sure about Jolie! I think overall changeling looks like a better full package than doubt, i think the acting in doubt will likely get more recognition in total nominations than changeling, but of any performances between the two Jolie’s seems the strongest.
PS i’m relatively new to this site, is there anywhere where people can straight up just post their predictions?
JAB: First of all, glad to have you.
I’ve considered starting a forum here at In Contention. Some have suggested it. But I’d prefer to steer clear of the potential drama involved.
Generally people offer their insight into predictions every Monday when I toss up my own updated charts with the “Off the Carpet” Oscar column, but I suppose I could throw up a Predictions post every once in a while for people to cut loose with their predix.
I’d like to hear other ideas and perspectives on that, though. What’s the best way to do that without going the full-blown forum route?
Guys, again from the blog of Anne Thompson at Variety:

UPDATE: Someone who has seen Doubt writes:
“It’s a knockout. I had read the play and the movie took it way beyond. Meryl Streep is definitely on the best actress list. Shanley’s direction is very ‘on.’”
My informant has also seen Frost/Nixon:
“It was just as good — it will be head-to-head between these two powerhouse smart, adult play adaptations. Frank Langella will get a best actor nomination for portraying Nixon, and Michael Sheen might very well get a best supporting as Frost. In each case, I think the screenplays will be nominated — J.P. Shanley and Peter Morgan, both for adaptations of their own plays.”
Do not count out Nicole Kidman. She is the leading lady of the Best Picture contender – Australia. The role of Lady Sarah Ashley is written especially for her. I heard she had a number of emotional and heart breaking scenes in this film.
can i say i don’t think we should count out Rachel getting married for a best pic nod, it’s my #6. quirky looking comedy with heart, maybe this year’s LMS or Juno?
that informant totally sounds…familiar
“I could fight you.”
“You will lose.”
PSH is going to be nominated. I am sure of it. Meryl, too, I think.
And this is doubtlessly in my top 5 most anticipated movies for the rest of the year!
Kris, who do you mean by saying “familiar”?? You mean he is the guy just doing publicity for Doubt? Do you still keep hearing negative buzz for Doubt?
I hope I’m not alone here (having not read every single comment, but most) in feeling that PSH isn’t all that convincing…? He seems very good, but I dunno. I didn’t get much of a characterization from him and I think he’ll definitely miss out on supporting actor this year. After all, that useless nom of his last year certainly doesn’t tell voters “ooh, let’s hand him another one”. Curse you, CWW!
Adams looks like her role was juiced-up a little, and I have no doubt she brought a quality to it which will matter to some voters. Not sure if she can get many #1 slots though…we’ll see. But I could see a BFCA nomination at the very least–maybe a Satellite nod, too.
Streep, however, will definitely own this film. So much so, in fact, I think it’ll just be her show, so BP may not happen. I think it’s, er…definitely stagy, as some said. But also, I think overall, it feels like something that would miss out on the big nom, in the realm of Notes on a Scandal, among other examples.
I’m not sure about Davis either. I think she’ll get some raves and maybe a couple of critic awards, but I dunno if it’ll be enough. I’d love it though, because she deserves a break ^_^. I loved her cameo in World Trade Center.
I thought PSH was really good in Charlie Wilson’s War. I myself would prob. not have voted to nominate him but I can live with it.
I thought everyone looked pretty good, To me Meryl Streep it seems will do very well and so will PSH who is one of my favorite actors. I also think Viola Davis’ best scenes are possibly not in the trailer.
I didn’t like the fact that there was a lot of build up to something but no truly emotional moment, i guess that’s why you go and see the movie maybe.
Not a BP Nominee but I think this is Streep’s third Oscar, Sorry, kate, but if you want to win an Oscar, you need to go to supporting category for “The Reader”. Davis’s nomination is very possible. But I’m not sure about Adams and Hoffman. We need to see them.
Best Actress cotneders: “I can fight you”
Meryl Streep: “You will lose”
[…] free to cut loose about whatever. JAB yesterday was asking about a space for posting predictions, so maybe we can wax on about that in the comments below. […]
Excellent little trailer.
Streep and Hoffman should get nominated. Hoffman definitely should. Streep should, but I’d be able to live with it if she’s not.
We shall see…
I’m really pulling in for Meryl Streep on this one. The trailer makes me want to see the rest of the movie, but I doubt (no pun intended) that I would see it for little else.
It’s going to be another tight race for the actresses this year. I guess it’s safe to say that it’ll be like the 2007, when Streep, Mirren, and Dench were nominated.
Winslet and Jolie can have their Oscars another day. (Hasn’t Jolie won one already?) If they give it to Winslet now, it’s going to be a pity Oscar for everything else she’s done, especially Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. If they give it to Jolie, I dunno.
I wanna see Meryl pick up her 3rd. She’s the world’s best actress and the Oscars have robbed her for other performances. She should have tied in ’95/’96 with Susan Sarandon and won in ’03/’04 for Adaptation.
