  • Harris is McCain

I had to stop and take a second to point this out. The Julianne-Moore-as-Sarah-Palin production still from in Jay Roach’s “Game Change” seemed about right, nothing to write home about, etc. But this still, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, stopped me in my tracks. THAT’s Ed Harris? I saw McCain straight away and had to search for the actor in there. Brilliant transformation.

Is that a fat suit or did Harris bulk up considerably? He’s a guy who loves to get way under the skin of a role, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he crammed some Twinkies and Ho-Hos and cupcakes and pizza and ice cream. Then again, last time we spoke (in January), he was as sinewy as ever, so I guess it’s doubtful. Then again…

“Game Change” is scheduled to air on HBO later this year. Check out the full still after the jump.

  • Live from New York, it’s a nose dive

Boy, John McCain didn’t seem to get the joke last night on Saturday Night Live.  Having him on the show was the final nail in the coffin.  The show’s writers, though smartly avoiding hitting it too squarely on the nose, basically succeeded in making him look sad and desperate.  Borderline Dole desperate.  And not in the ironic, self-deprecating way either.

It’s in the subtle glance Seth Meyers gives him on Weekend Update when McCain asks, “You know how they call me the maverick?”  Easily painted as a joke — “Duh, of course I know they call you that, you always talk about it” — that kind of thing.  But the “look” was so strangely unnecessary that it seems to be working on another level.  If the boos during that segment didn’t sell the moment enough, that is.

Anyway, just caught up with it on DVR and it’s the first thing that popped into my head.  Other than, “Give Kristen Wiig her own show already,” that is.

  • Silver lining in a CNN headline for McCain?

First and foremost, I hope everyone in the New Orleans area (indeed, the entire gulf region that is about to get pounded by an unrelenting storm) safely evacuates the area.  Our first trial run in this regard was enough pain for a lifetime, and having been at Mardi Gras the year before Katrina, I couldn’t help but notice how broken and sullen the town seemed to me when I came through in April of 2007.  The effects will likely never go away, and certainly not with reminders like Gustav every three years.

That said, my first thought when I read the highlighted portion of this CNN news module was that John McCain and the Republicans probably caught a publicity break:
