‘Amelia’ trailer

Written by

Judging from this recently posted trailer for Mira Nair’s “Amelia,” the Amelia Earhart biopic that will certainly be the centerpiece of this year’s Fox Searchlight Oscar campaign, I’d say Richard Gere, rather than Ewan McGregor, has a shot at the supporting race for a role that looks to sport some considerable screen time.  He even gets above-the-title placement.

As for the trailer itself, it’s a pretty standard glimpse.  Everything is as you’d expect from a period, some might say “Oscar bait” production such as this.  As usual, Swank haters will gag at the “2 time Academy Award Winner” intro, of course.

Here is the embed, but Yahoo! Movies had the exclusive, FYI:

That doesn’t look bad at all. Sure, this is not the actual movie and who knows if Swank’s greatest moments are shown on the trailer or if the script is good or not, but that trailer makes me look forward to it.

I have been very clueless about what to expect from this but it actually looks interesting and a very good looking production. If it delivers it could definitely be a contender in many categories.

They’re remaking The Aviator awfully soon, aren’t they?

I agree with Chad lol. It looks to boring, it doesn’t give anything new. And Hillary Swank with another character with men behavior? We already know that she’s good at that…

The production values look top notch, actually its not as bad as I was expecting for the whole picture, but still as biopic-y as they come it seems.

    OMG That looks amazing!!!

And on a side note, I’m getting really irritated at the fact that people don’t like anything. It’s all bashing and bashing.

I could not agree more. So you can’t sell your screenplay or land a paying directing gig, GET OVER IT. Bashing everything others do will not get you any closer to your own personal success.

Looks all right. Richard Gere needs to GTFO but otherwise – I’m intrigued.

People better not start hating on Swank if she becomes a contender for Oscar #3.

I actually think having a critical eye can be monumentally helpful in achieving your own personal success in the movie business.

Well think again Chad. You do not say “Abracadabra” and suddenly you make a movie! A movie requires effort. I mean, I made a 15 minute short, and the process was really long. I think it’s impressive how a lot of people can manage to make high quality long lenght films.

Amelia looks amazing. Did you see that photograhy? The costumes? And Hilary Swank looks really good in this. Her makeup is great as well. It’s also refreshing to see this type of biopic being made by a woman.

Maybe this year’s Australia? I don’t know why, but I think this blow up.

Again, for me, it’s looks like a Hallmark production. Good technical aspects thought. Swank looks regular (Nothing outstading) and I’m more interesting in Ewan McGregor instead Richard Gere (Who looks miscast)

I still believe in “bright Star” as the female drive film with Jane Campion and Abbie Cornish as the frontrunners in their respective categories

Xavi i had the same thoughts about australia actually. But i think everything about this looks good, everything except Swank that is.

    Looks solid. I’m digging Gere.

There’s a difference in being critical and simply being a complainer who travels from blog to blog whining about just about everything.

There are certain posters I see on a daily basis posting their always negative views about the Oscar nominees, the Oscar telecast, James Cameron’s success, Michael Bay talent or lack thereof, I could go on on about what some of these people who post here complain about, literally, trashing a film sight unseen most of the time.

Amelia will probably the sames as Cotillard’s movie, “The last flight of lancaster”

Marion Cotillard can be her rival for best actress with her similar movie “the last flight of lancaster”. i think marion might overshadow her performance with the similar aviator role.

marion can be a double nominee at this year’s oscars with “The last Flight” and “Nine” like penelope cruz.

OH MY GOD, marion cotillard can be a triple nominee for this year’s golden globes with 3 strong movies this year.

Best actress in a DRAMA for The last flight of Lancaster
Best actress in Musical for Nine
Best supporting actress for Public Enemies

    Me,

Obviously, a critical eye is not the only thing you need to make a great movie. Great photography, costumes and makeup aren’t the only things either. We are allowed our different tastes. I just think everything about it looks the opposite of refreshing.

I bet she won’t get a single GG nomination.

She might be nominated for best picture though (what a vision).

Last flight, I really hope so… Marion Cotillard for the double nominations PLEASE!!!

I get the feeling this will be the “Frost/Nixon” of 2009. A movie that most people will like but nobody can really hate it, so it will pop up at the bottom of top 10 lists and get nominated for a few awards at major ceremonies but never win anything. Even in a field of 5, it probably would have gotten a Best Picture nomination just because of its status as THAT movie. But soon afterwards, it will just become the movie with “Nominated for 5 Academy Awards including: BEST PICTURE” plastered across the top because it didn’t actually win anything, and not long after that it will be doomed to third grade history classes and countless Hallmark Channel showings.

Also, “Golden Globe Winner Richard Gere” and “TWO-time Academy Award Winner Hilary Swank”?!? Are they really so desperate to plaster any sort of awards recognition on this movie that they will name drop anything? I mean, they don’t say “Three-Time Academy Award Winner Jack Nicholson” or “Two-Time Academy Award Winner Meryl Streep.” I guess in Fox Searchlight’s defense, Hilary Swank isn’t a perennial Oscar nominee like those two. But still, this is ridicuous.

Looks too…simple? The sets, costumes, art direction and cinematography as a whole look well done, but the story seems too straight-forward. It looks like any other biopic, at least based on what was shown.

And while I’m not a hater of Hilary Swank, I am getting a bit tired of her playing characters with similar traits. She needs to challenge herself, and this wasn’t the film to do it in. While I’ll probably get a little more excited as more trailers drop and as the release date approaches, right now this is one of my least anticipated of the Oscar season.

This looks pretty damn promising to me. On the other hand, I must admit: After I saw a 20- minute assemblage of rough-cut footage last year, I was convinced “Australia” would be a MONSTER hit. So take this with a grain of salt.

I think Chad was too polite to point out that he has actually made a feature film. So spare him the lecture.

Anyway, the trailer does nothing for me. I actually like Swank, but she’s never gelled in a period piece before — and while I can’t tell much about the performance from this, something about it seems a little off here.
