POLL: the most influential films of all time, round one, part four

Written by

in

I decided to bump today’s poll an hour to give some extra lead time to the sad news of director Marc Rocco’s passing, but I don’t think it ultimately mattered much.  The three survivors of last week’s slate were “Casablanca,” “The Matrix” and “Star Wars.”  On to a new set of 10.

Again, the groupings in these polls are decided at random.  So no yelling at your humble servant.  But I expect more than a few to be dismayed at having to choose three from the sterling collective you’ll find in the left sidebar.  C’est la vie.

Choose your trio and be heard!  Two more weeks of round one after this and we’ll be moving on.  Once again, for background on this series, click here.

Criminal selection here. Broke my heart to leave off Easy Rider.

Agreed. I decided on “Breathless,” “Easy Rider” and “The Seventh Seal,” but only because I assume the likes “2001” and “Pulp Fiction” will get plenty of votes from others.

Damn….this is the hardest one yet…I don’t know what to choose.

    The Godfather over BREATHLESS???

REALLY?! The film that was the catalyst to the French New Wave is not in the top 3?!?!!

  5. Chris Avatar

“Breathless”, “2001” and “Jurassic Park”, although it broke my heart to leave off “The Seventh Seal” which unlike the others is one of my 10 all time favourites.

Easy Rider made independent cinema possible…where are the votes?!?

“Breathless” is far and away the most influential here. Changed the face of cinema to what we know it as today.

Just for clarification – are we ranking the most influential films on the history of film, or the most influential films on society in general?

Breathless and 2001 are easy choices. It’s the third one that is difficult to decide on.

I’m with Woody Allen on “Seventh Seal.” If Bergman gets shut out again…

Kris do you get to see all the films at Cannes?

  12. Gustavo H.R. Avatar

2001, PULP FICTION and EASY RIDER.

Just remember, there would be no “Pulp Fiction” without “Breathless.”

When the final influential films list is compiled, we’re going to have to do another list: the films that influenced the influential films lists.

  15. Charles Avatar

    2001, Breathless, Godfather

although easy rider and pulp fiction should get an honorary free pass to the next round

if the lord of the rings gets grouped as a trilogy why are the godfathers split up?

Are people really voting for the movies they feel are more influential, or is everyone just picking their favorite movies, like me?

    Pulp Fiction. Jurassic Park. T2.
    Tarantino. Spielberg. Cameron.
I’m a sucker for the 90’s and the question is the definition of influential. Influential in terms of movie history, or influential in terms of Pulp Fiction made me fall in love with movies and want to write them? Tricky, tricky. Do you vote with the head or the heart? The latter tells me that 2001, The Godfather and The LOTR Trilogy are all overrated. Yeah, I said it.

I ditto Guy’s votes with “Breathless,” “Easy Rider” and “The Seventh Seal.” No real doubt about it.

  18. Glenn Avatar

“2001”, “Pulp Fiction” and “Terminator 2”. Just think how many movies use colour filters!

Pulp Fiction, The Godfather and T2, i havent seen 2001 (i have it for about year now, lol) i hope to change that this year.

  20. Homero Avatar

2001, Pulp fiction and Easy Rider…I still don’t understand how The Godfather is getting so many votes. If anything, it was the most influenced.

  21. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

At least The Godfather (which I did not vote on here, mind you) has a much clearer claim to “influential” than the sequel. Lots changed in the distribution racket after it landed $100 million.

The way this poll SHOULD (but won’t) turn out:

    1. Pulp Fiction
    2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
    3. Jurassic Park
    4. Breathless
    5. Easy Rider
    6. The Godfather
    7. The Searchers
    8. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
    9. The Lord of the Rings
    10. The Seventh Seal

    Sigh.

  23. Adam Smith Avatar

    2001, Breathless, Searchers

  24. Glenn Avatar

“Jurassic Park” influenced Lucas to make the new “Star Wars” movies. Whether it acts as a positive or a negative for the voting I don’t know…

the lord of the rings trilogy is the most influentional movie ever. the godfather is good but not epic.
