I absolutely love Miyazaki. The animation looks gorgeous but when isn’t it? I think I remember reading somewhere it was done with water colors and pastels. Ponyo sounds most like My Neighbor Totoro and that is what many children’s films should aspire to be. And what a voice cast! The animated feature category seems crowded this year. Maybe we’ll have another 5 films in Animated Feature like for 2002?

Well, there’s a film I’ll be skipping in the theaters. Not because I don’t want to see it, but because of the dumb American dubbing Disney feels obligated to enforce over every animated foreign Miyazaki film.

It’s supposed to be in Japanese. Give me the right language, please.

The marketing of this doesn’t look like a rip off of Nemo. No, not at all…

Reminds me of the Finding Nemo poster. They look very similar.

The lettering does look like Finding Nemo but otherwise that looks like a great poster. I still say only three nominees. Up, Ponyo, and Nine.
No faith in Princess and the Frog

ironic comment from someone called SpeakingEnglish.

but to answer your complaint, the movie is for kids who can’t read that fast.

CAN’T. WAIT. I love Miyazaki and Disney always does a good job with the voiceovers, probably the only ones I can actually tolerate.

I prefer watching cartoons in a language I understand. Animation is such a visual medium that adding subtitles would just make it hard to watch.

Why do the words ‘Cyrus’ and ‘Jonas’ appear on the poster?

I actually adopted that name after I saw “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.” You know, the whole Bardem-Cruz rapport. But make no mistake, I’m obsessed with foreign films and won’t watch them if they’re not in their original language. Even the animated ones.

Let’s hope Cate’s voice-over roles in Fox and Ponyo don’t overshadow her starring roles this year. It’s so thrilling to see her get top billing (she rarely does!), especially after her wonderful turn in Button last year. Looks to be a great year for animation.

Kevin: Not to burst your bubble, but Cate Blanchett is top-billing on “Ponyo” because the cast is listed in alphabetical order.

CBF getting the reference for you but I’m pretty sure Meryl Streep replaced her in Fox.

According to Kevin’s logic, Miley Cyrus’s little sister has higher billing than Matt Damon, Tina Fey et al…

I saw the film a few days ago (I live in Spain and it was released here a couple of weeks ago), and although this is probably the most “childish” Miyazaki film, it’s an absolute delight.. Even with a simpler plot than usual, it keeps many of Miyazaki’s visual and thematic keys (or obssesions). A wonderful film.. I was lucky to catch it in the single theater that was showing it in its original japanese language. It’s worth the reading!!!!

“Why do the words ‘Cyrus’ and ‘Jonas’ appear on the poster?”

Because they’re being smart and hiring people with those names to voice the movie? Gawd. Yeah, you probably hate these two because kids because they don’t appeal to your demographic but this being a kids movie and all it probably makes sense? Also, I’m sure the Japanese version features people that will appeal to a young Japanese audience.

Also, SpeakingEnglish some cinemas will surely be playing the original Japanese audio version of the movie. Probably more upmarket cinemas, but surely there’ll be a few. I know that’s what it’s like here. I thought I was going to see “Spirited Away” with english, but then subtitles came on. So… yeah. I’m sure it’ll be out there you might just have to look harder.

Does anybody can predict if there will be 5 nominees this year? Academy rules says there must be 16 films at least to have 5 nominees. Roger Nathaniels thinks there’ll be no problem but taking a look to this year’s list I don’t think so…

@Glenn….I find it very cynical for Disney to hire the younger siblings of its ‘stars’ to voice the two main characters. I would understand if perhaps Miley Cyrus and one of the actual ‘Jonas Brothers’ had a part, but both their siblings? They haven’t done anything to appeal to the target demographic, other than be related to those who might. One wouldn’t be noticeable, but having both of them is very conspicuous and frankly bizarre….are they being primed for something or is it some sort of contractual obligation?

They did use Elle Fanning a while ago but she is an actual actress in addition to being Dakota’s sister.

So this is the first year that all the nominees for Best Animated Film could be from Disney, assuming there are only three nominees of course. The Princess and the Frog, Up, Ponyo, and A Christmas Carol.
