I go back and forth with Lars Von Trier. Lots of respect for “Breaking the Waves,” hated “Dancer in the Dark,” “Dogville” topped my list in 2004 (though shamefully I’ve yet to see “Manderlay”), etc., etc. But I can’t wait to see “Antichrist.” This new still from the film totally freaks me out but I can’t look away. What’s most striking, however, is how classy the composition is. I thought about linking rather than posting, since “NSFW” is arguable, but I figured screw it (no pun intended):

What’s wrong with “Dancer in the Dark”? It contains the female performance of the decade.
…….eh……..
Strangely, this reminds me much more of early Pre-Dogma Von Trier.
Dancer in The Dark also left me sort of high and dry. Especially since the first 20 minutes I kind of was thinking “This is Waiting for Guffman except with miserable people.”
Von Trier is my vote for most annoying and over-rated filmmaker, but this intrigues me. I’m sure I’ll regret that, but for now, I’m intrigued.
Looks strange.
I’m kind of with Chad on this one.
I kind of wish I hadn’t been a Bjork obsessive before the film came out, so I’d have a more objective place to stand on that performance. But fuck it, it’s fucking astonishing.
I agree with Kris in that I go back and forth with Von Trier. I did like both Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark (and I think both have phenomenal lead acting), but Dogville and Manderlay…I don’t know, I think both have great acting (especially Kidman and Clarkson in the former) but they rubbed me the wrong way.
What bugs me about Von Trier is that he says he’s making movie that are ‘pure’ since he believes that special effects and fancy cameras and and music and costumes etc are distracting. Yet isn’t the complete absence of all those things distracting also when they are so gritty and feel like a documentary or a filmed play? Not that I have problems with movies like those, but it can be “distracting” from time to time. Then again I was never of huge interest in Dogme 95 or the faux-Dogme 95. What a bunch of pretentious rules they have to follow that quite a few didn’t even follow
Plus, there was a scene in which he recorded killing a donkey for Manderlay and then the scene wasn’t even used in the film. What the fuck?
I actually am a lurker, I don’t usually post but Andrew’s comment made me laugh – obviously there’s no winning when somebody doesn’t like someone or something: yes the absence or the presence of one thing is same
You can thank Oscar winner Anthony Dod Mantle for that nutty shot.
Bill, I think “almost nutty shot” would be more appropriate.
Yeah, Willem. Get that shit.
I haven’t seen Dancer in the Dark. I’ve wanted to for ages. Every other movie I’ve seen of von Trier’s – Breaking the Waves, Dogville, Manderlay – I’ve enjoyed a lot. This image is great to look at, really interesting composition. I’m excited.
Agreed 100% that “Dancer In The Dark” contains the female performance of the decade. Hands down. Astonishing work. And as great as Kidman is in “To Die For” and “The Hours”, her greatest achievement is in “Dogville”. Such a riveting performance that is so raw and stripped, it serves to erase every questionable choice the actress has made over the last few years and help her maintain her status as one of the leading actresses of this decade.
Though I’m ashamed to admit that this is the first time I’ve heard of this film. Though my excitement for it is already through the roof!
(Oh, and Manderlay is interesting, though it suffers from being too similar and easily inferior to its predecessor)
Isn’t Lars shooting this with the Red One?
Why did he name it AntiChrist? It’s very misleading…
He is one of the best european directors. And dancer in the Dark is a masterpiece. And I prefere a movie with no visual effects, fancy cameras and musics, but with a good storie, like the Lars von Trier movies. I can´t wait….
Dancer in the Dark is definitely my favorite Lars Von Trier film and it makes me so sad that Bjork will no longer act since she has such natural talent at it. Oh well, all of us Bjork fans will always be able to have that film as a showcase for how genius and talented she is.
Anyway, this pic looks freaky in a good way and after reading about Charlottes comments about how graphic the movie is (in terms of violence and sex) I am really curious to see how Lars can pull it off.
Yeah, add me to the group that thinks Bjork gave one of the defining performances of the decade. Truly remarkable work.
“Dogville” is astonishing, “Manderley” was a disaster. There’s a reason why he decided to not make “Wasington”.
“Dancer in the Dark” is his finest achievement, but apart from the aforementioned “Manderley” I’ve never seen as a von Trier film I didn’t like. His early stuff like “Europa” and “Rigit” all have such great atmosphere, and movies like “Breaking the Waves” are so emotionally powerful. Even “The Boss of it All” was an amusing and original take on the office comedy.
