Okay, so I’m a bit slow on the uptake, but this just occurred to me today, after Ari Folman’s semi-surprising win at last night’s DGA awards. So I ask you: Why was “Waltz With Bashir” eligible for the DGA, but “WALL-E” wasn’t?
Anybody?

My best guess would be because it was acted out first, drawn based on the live-action video and then animated. I guess they assume this to mean it was physically directed? I guess…?
You’re probably right, Brad. But jeez… talk about a fine line.
Well maybe Waltz with Bashir was only eligible in documentary and not the feature film category. Just as Wall-E was ineligible in the feature film category. That’s my best guess.
Maybe the DGA should think about a category for animated films.
Waltz was likely eligible because the director was a member of the guild. WALL-E wasn’t eligible because Andrew Stanton isn’t a member of the guild. The same went for the Writer’s Guild. It wasn’t because it was animated, although it still stinks.
Oh, I didn’t realize you had to be a member to be considered for a nomination!? That’s kinda unfair I think.
perhaps it is the contents of the film, maybe that helped rule it out on a technicality? The second half of walle reminds you that it is a Pixar/Summer film/family blockbuster. it is formulated/predictable..etc. While the first half was so sweet that i forgot. forgot it was animated, forgot it’s a Disney cash cow..etc. Waltz doesn’t stop halfway.
