ZOMG! Okay, here it is, in official form. I have to fess up and admit I watched the sketchy bootleg last week. But it’s nice to finally get a clear gander, and really, it’s nicely achieved, I think, given that there likely wasn’t a lot of footage to pull from and this raises the stakes for the series with just a brief exchange. I have no idea what is up with that chant, though. Anyway, check out the teaser trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises,” via the film’s Facebook page, by clicking the image below or watch an embed after the jump.
UPDATED (10:48pm): Thanks to Jack for pointing us to this version featuring clips from “Batman: The Animated Series” and other DC toons. Brilliant:

Batman dying is a real possibility and Nolan probably recognizes that to set these films apart from other comic book films, that would be a bold move. Surprisingly, from the sounds of things, fans of the character don’t seem to be THAT bent out of shape about the possibility. I remember reports earlier this year that someone at WB commented that they were concerned about Nolan’s script for TDKR and that they weren’t sure it would work. Whether that is true or not, who knows, but it would fit with the Batman dies whispers.
Another possibility, I think, is that Batman becomes so angst-ridden after battling Bane that he just disappears to “re-train” if you will. Perhaps to get a hold on his anger, he returns to an obscure third world country to hone more on the psychological training to better gain control of himself.
In the Batman canon, fans of the character know it is Batman’s angst that leads to Robin becoming necessary. Maybe Nolan could close his trilogy with Bruce leaving Gotham again after re-gaining the city, but leaving the slightest of cracks for someone to come in and carry on the story with the Dick Grayson/Batman Year 3 storyline from the comics.
Not likely, but short of Batman dying in TDKR, if the endings of the previous two films have taught us anything, the ending will be an eye-opener.
Kris: Have you read the Gotham Central graphic novels? They are kind of like what you are describing with the CSI Gotham thing. Awesome read.
Great minds think alike Kris!
I’d also love to see some DC action on the small screen. I know Marvel/Disney has some ambitious plans for ABC. The closest we’ve come to CSI: Gotham was the Birds of Prey series that ran for one season.
I think what we’re learning through these various posts is that there is a wealth of material out there ripe for both the big screen and the small screen. What’s lacking is someone with ambition and creativity to bring it to life.
Fess up. It’s WAY too similar, my friend. ;)
Jack: I own the whole series of comics and read them all. Get Brubaker in on it and, IMO, you have a hell of a series.
Agreed on Brubaker.
My dream would be to see The Long Halloween made into an animated feature. Excited about Year One this fall, but TLH would be awesome.
Here ya go, Loyal:

Great minds, indeed.
Oh no, I’ve been discussing possible endings to Nolan’s franchise since before The Dark Knight! lol
You can’t really kill Batman for reasons we’ve already covered. But killing Bruce makes sense. Having him killed during a senseless random act of violence carries great emotional weight.
I’d set it in an alley just to drive the point home that while Batman has made a difference to Gotham and it’s citizens, much hasn’t changed since Bruce’s parents died outside that theatre. The need for Batman is eternal.
Yeah, that Twitter thread convo got into some kind of robbery scenario where Bruce is caught in a tragic crossfire or something. Would be chilling and, I think, profound.
LOL, that’s spooky Kris. And awesome!
“He’s human, after all.”
“Check his wallet.”
Over/Under on TDKR running 3 hours?
I heard over 2 1/2 for sure, but a full 3 seems doubtful.
2 3/4 hours wouldn’t surprise me.
You start getting into 3 hours and it limits your showings, but I’m sure Nolan has a long leash at WB after all the money he has made for it.
He doesn’t strike me as someone without discipline, though. I don’t think he’d get too carried away on length.
They still have scripted stuff on broadcast?
Loyal and Kris,
I love that idea about Bruce getting killed in the same way his parents did, despite his years of training and his crusade against crime in Gotham. It would be an incredible ending.
I also like the idea of a CSI: Gotham, although preferably with a much grittier feel than CSI. You could make a hell of a TV show with it.
Touche, Drew.
Haven’t seen this discussed yet, but which Nov./Dec. release carries the TDKR trailer?
I think I Am Legend carried TDK’s first trailer in Dec. 2007.
I’m not in the know as far as winter releases. Any guesses?
I’ll take a stab at answering my own question: Sherlock Holmes on Dec. 16th?
http://www.moviefone.com/december-movie-release-schedule
Sherlock is most likely.
(Which will be a bit ironic given Downey’s comments re: TDK.)
That was bush league of Downey. It reeked of sour grapes. Or his incompetence for following the film, take your pick.
Either way, you likely won’t see RDJ in a future Nolan film. : )

I knew it wouldn’t be long-
TDKR teaser (Batman Animated Series style):

DRM, I like it. Very adult for an animated film aimed at older children.
Jack: Hah! That’s BRILLIANT.
Jack: Downey seems very competitive sometimes.
Kris: You know what, you could do it on cable. Seriously, Walking Dead has been huge, and with the success TNT has had with Falling Skies, they might be interested in more genre stuff. Write a spec, treatment, whatever the correct term is, and pitch it. I’m sure it’s more complicated than that. It could air late July around the same time as Nolans films were released and get 13 to 16 episodes a season.
I’m half joking, but I could see Kris doing it.
I’d be all over it.
Are you guys talking live action or animation?
Sadly, I don’t think that a live action TV-series would have enough production value to make it watchable. Bad costumes and bad production design can really ruin A LOT for this kind of thing.
I’d be fine with a really greatly written, dark and gritty hour long animated series.
Chris G: If they could fund the cape or wither of the shows mentioned above, I’m sure a live action show could be produced.
either*
Walking Dead and the Cape are not really impressive shows, IMO.
Production wise I mean. I haven’t seen Falling Skies, so can’t comment on that.
The scenario you guys are talking about – with the random street crime – was done on The West Wing. At the end of season 2 the secret service agent who took down a would-be assassin gets killed in a convenience store robbery. Pretty shocking.
*season 3
Chris: Live action, and it could totally be done. The costumes on the Batman films so far haven’t exactly been elaborate.
Nolan’s Batman films, that is.
John G: You just brought back memories lol. That was the family show in my house.
Well yeah, that’s true. But they still have an attention to detail and aesthetic that will be hard to achieve once you drop your money output in production design/costume design.
I just can’t remember ever having seen a sci-fi (yeah, I know, batman isn’t exactly sci-fi) TV-show were I weren’t bothered by the costumes, effects and set design.
I guess if you get as much money to do your show as Boardwalk Empire, then you’re home safe.
Is this Falling Skies thing any good?
I think it’s a small thing in this case.
I need to catch up on Falling Skies. Haven’t heard much, though.
@Jack Weil – That was bush league of Downey. It reeked of sour grapes. Or his incompetence for following the film, take your pick.
What ? Follow that mess? I’m pretty sure he had no problems.
Either way, you likely won’t see RDJ in a future Nolan film. : ) Thank God!
Tdkr trailler will probably be attached to Mission Impossible. Makes more sense.
Gioconda,
Mission Impossible isn’t a WB release, so it definitely won’t be attached to that one. But it will be attached to Sherlock Holmes 2.
