Last week’s Oscar Talk podcast dug into the possibilities of “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn” in the Best Animated Feature Film category, while last Monday’s Off the Carpet column spent plenty of time mulling over 2011 as the year of Steve Spielberg. Today, a full international trailer for the film has been released via Yahoo! Movies. Check it out by clicking the image below or watch an embed after the jump.

Looks pretty good. It’s funny, you have to look to full-CG animation now (Pixar, Kung Fu Panda, this) for the most classical, coherent action sequences in today’s movies.
Looks like Wayne Rooney in the still on the yahoo trailer.
Because the logistics of camera angles, impossible gravity and epic-and-inventive explosions/shenanigans are overcome. That’s one genre that full-blown CG movies make me optimistic about.
Don’t like it. Looks like a film that could be great, if it wasn’t animated. They should either go for 100% realism (which still won’t work) or a comic style. But this is a mess, stuck in between. And especially Tintin looks creepyly fake.
I don’t like it either.
I was really looking forward to this, since it’s the only comic I read as a child.
But it just doesn’t click.
And looks like Spielberg’s made this too dark and violent for what the comics actually were.
I agree.. I didn’t like it.. The animation for me was just off…
I disagree with the above comments. I’m a massive Tintin purist and would have been up in arms if they screwed up the characters.
But, they look absolutely fantastic, perfectly capturing the Herge style. It’s exactly like the comic books (and the Nelvana animated series) brought to the third dimension, which is precisely what I wanted.
Not to mention, can you honestly think of a more appropriate director for Tintin than Spielberg? It’s the most perfect marriage between source material and filmmaker I can think of.
The teaser works better because we didn’t get much indication at exactly how childish the script for the film was.
The animation looks gorgeous.
It looks like escapist fun for me. The animation ranges from wow to slightly underwhelming in spots. And the fact that it’s animated makes me wish (kinda) that it was just live action.
But it looks … impressive.
Wow, this just didn’t do a thing for me. I didn’t like the animation, and to read “groundbreaking” on the trailer doesn’t make things better.
This would be great as live action or 2d animation, like the cartoon (that I loved as a child), but this is just not good looking.
I’ll repeat what I said before and that is I think Spielberg is releasing Tintin in December because he views it as Best Picture contender. I think it has a very solid chance for a nomination.
Goes without saying that if it does get nominated for best animated film – well, let’s just say HappyFeet 2 better watch out.
The visual presence, in addition to being unique should be on par with Avatar. Love how kinetic the scenes are. I cannot wait to see this on an IMAX screen, popcorn in hand.
And why they didn’t offer this trailer in 1080p is beyond me.
P.S. Love blink and you’ll miss it level of attention to detail – Tintin’s grooming his quiff and seeing it appear in the reflections in the mirrors. Sweetness.
The “they should have made it live-action” complaints rather annoy me. There’s a stylistic reason why Spielberg and Jackson wanted to go in this direction as they wanted to preserve the Herge look while still bringing it into a three-dimensional environment. You can’t quite pull off these characters in live-action (as the 1960s French adaptations very much prove), so this is the right direction to go in.
I wonder if the score is Williams or just a sample.
The animation looks much better than it did in the teaser.
Agreed Stefan. Plus if it was live-action people would just complain about all the cgi that would be in it.
Not bad.
You just can’t count this one out. ;)
I’ll probably go watch it, but this trailer makes it look really dull to me.
Vomit-inducing. I hate this realm of animation. It just looks like a video game.
Stefan, I agree with you on the animation of the film. I don’t mind the look. It DOES give me the Herge feel that it’s supposed to, but the vibe I get from the trailer is that it’s going to be too intense and violent compared to the original comics. I wondered if they’d make it more aggresive in the American version and the trailer makes me think they did.
I think it looks great. Minus the look of some the animals, and a few animation issues, I think it looks really good.
Based on this trailer, the story could go either way. I’m optimistic though, based on the talent involved.
I don’t like it at all. Frankly this main character just doesn’t seem very cool to me, and it doesn’t help that his face is straight out of the uncanny valley.
I agree that the characters look creepy- I just think Motion Capture looks off. It was the same with Beowulf and The Polar Express.
Still no word about eligibility for the Animated Feature Oscar. In an extremely weak year like this one and Spielberg pushing the branch to make a decision, how long until the branch say anything?
The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Uncanny Valley
I don’t know the source material, and this trailer looks just plain dull. The storyline and the characters fail to intrigue me in any way, and the animation looks effective if not particularly visually appealing.
I think Jake D just wrote what I’ve been thinking, but couldn’t write/verbalize.
It’s a bit L.A. Noire in its uncannyness and somberness – thought it’s s still very interesting and exciting to me. Can’t wait to check it out in theaters.
I’m a big fan of Tintin as well (both comics and animated show), and I think this looks great. Tintin is just something that in my mind can’t be done in live-action.
I’m a lot more optimistic about this than I was when I first saw the avatar trailer.
However, I think that Jackson’s follow-up based on Prisoners of the Sun will be more amazing, given the source material. Anyone know what they will do for the third one?
