Catch up with the idea behind these weekend posts here.
Well. Here we are. It’s probably going to be kind of difficult to use this weekly open thread for anything other than Oscar chatter, given tomorrow’s festivities, but here’s the space nevertheless.
The Oscar Guide has been another lovely success this year and I thank everyone for the discussion and voting. It’s come to be a nice way, for me, anyway, to fully consider things during phase two while ticking off the calendar days, eyes on the prize the whole way. Tomorrow I’ll post what would essentially be the In Contention readers’ ballot, the results of our daily polls. You can dive back in and revisit the categories here.
Today brings the Independent Spirit Awards, moving back to the beach in Santa Monica after trying downtown out for a year. I’ll be on hand, but it will be TV-delayed, so if you want the winners first hand, follow me on Twitter. Show begins at 2pm PT.
The only Oscar story I participated in this year was this Susan Wloszczyna USA Today piece, because I appreciated the balanced approach she was taking. I think that, even though it comes at the end of a slew of “The King’s Speech” vs. “The Social Network” stories, it is a solid final word on a wildly passionate season.
(Actually, now that I think about it, I spoke on Christopher Nolan for a Brian Truitt USA Today piece that should hit some time this weekend, I guess.)
Anyway, not much else to throw out at you. The coverage is ubiquitous this week, so if you’re dying to talk about something else, here’s your open thread. (And remember to join the Oscar pool.)

Many great new trailers up these past few days
Meek’s Cutoff – Kelly Reichart’s follow-up to Wendy & Lucy and one of the most acclaimed films on the festival circuit last year
It looks visually dazzling beyond belief, in academy ratio no less.
Also Certified Copy, Uncle Boonmee, Heartbeats & Potiche – all widely acclaimed festival hits. All up in glorious HD at Apple.
I expect atleast Cutoff, Copy & Boonmee to feature on any no. of 2011 year end Top 10 lists.
Saw ‘Unknown’. Big fat whatever. Not bad, not good.
Looking forward to the annual Oscar party that I go to. About 15 friends. 6:30pm. Tons of food and drink.
Oh, and Oscar predictions game at my party, too. Most correct gets $280 this year. I’ve won twice in recent years. Choosing Streep was my foil last year.
Nearly time to look to 2011. Whose excited for Terrence Malick? I am!
I watched The New World for the second time yesterday. First time I saw it I wasn’t familiar with Malick or his style, the cover of the DVD made me think it was some kind of Apocalypto type actioner and I was watching it in a group in the mood for such an actioner. Needless to say, we were disappointed.
I came back to it having since seen and loved the rest of Malick’s all-too-small body of work and it landed this time around.
I hope Tree of Life is as good as it looks to be. The other 2011 film (assuming it manages to land this year) I can’t wait for is Jason Reitman’s new one with Diablo Cody, Young Adult.
Once again, I must give a big shout-out to the AMC Best Picture showcase. What a good time that is. And the AMC Colonial 18 in Lawrenceville does a great job in hosting it.
For the record, I liked “Winter’s Bone” a lot more the second time around; but have no idea what people see in John Hawkes’ performance. Rush and Ruffalo are not perfect either, but their characters at least have personality.
Good
