‘Incendies’ trailer

Written by

While some pundits are assuming that Javier Bardem’s Best Actor nomination makes “Biutiful” the film to beat in the foreign-language category — despite the fact that recent Oscar history doesn’t favor the biggest name in the contest — my instincts tell me the real race is between Susanne Bier’s “In a Better World” and Denis Villeneuve’s “Incendies,” both of which Sony Pictures Classics will release in April. I haven’t caught up with either yet, though this new trailer for the latter is making me even more annoyed at myself for sleeping past an early-morning screening at Venice last year. Click on the image to watch the trailer at Apple, or check out the embed after the jump.

Outstanding film! One of the very best of the year. I can’t wait for you and Kris to see it.

Unless someone supplies me with a screener, I’m seeing it in precisely three weeks’ time. Looking forward.

Just finished Dogtooth. Geez. I don’t even know what to think. I know it’s chock full of allegory/metaphor about the family institution, sexual depravity, and whatnot. I just …. haha, I have no idea. It has to sit with me. Anyone else have this issue regarding Dogtooth? What did everyone else think of it?

Looking forward to Incendies (nice trailer), Biutiful, & In a Better World when they come near my theater(s).

Yes, it’s a very good movie, worth seeing, with some great scenes.

@JJ1 Yeah, I know the feeling. It’s a real grower. And It took me a few days to really go over the themes and metaphors. But it’s truely one of the best this year, in my opinion. The only other film that tops it is A Prophet, if you count that as 2011.

JJ1, I had the same issue with Dogtooth, I had no idea what to think about it for days. I’ve generally moved toward the positive side of things. I think the shocking violence and sexual depravity were necessary to advance the story and weren’t just there to shock you. I read the film as an allegory that people will always act out, potentially in disgusting ways if you restrict their freedoms either as a family institution, or as a country. But I could be completely off haha, that movie was definitely something else.

    Looking forward to Incendies.

Maybe it’s foolish, but as a Quebecker myself, I am very proud of this movie’s success. It is one of the best film of the year in my opinion and the screenplay is also from a famous quebecker playwright.
Anyways, I hope it’ll win and I think it has a serious shot!

    Go Incendies :D

Incendies is technically pretty solid, but the script is 2 parts Babel, 1 part Miral, with a dash of Carmen Sandiego for good measure. It’s just convoluted enough to win.

It looks like the font used for ‘Inception’.

Even one part Miral is pretty terrifying.

From all the nominated films in this category, “Dogtooth” is by far the one I´m most desperately looking forward to see. Hope it´s as provocative and savagely as the trailer suggests. But no chance, the film doesn´t even have a german release date, it will probably not screened here. This sucks beyond believe!
Speaking about predictions (I only checked the trailers of the nominees) it pretty much looks like “In a better world” the one to beat, even though the match-up between HFPA and the Academy has been pretty weak during the past years (ask Michael Haneke).
Guy, will you write columns from the Berlin Film Festival? I know it´s starts in one and a half week.

Okay, I’m instantly hooked. Very much looking forward to this now!

The film’s a brilliant character study and although it relies heavily on coincidence, it’s intelligently done with a very clever parallel structure. I think it’s got a good shot at winning, and, maybe paradoxically, I don’t mean that as a negative.

Dominik: Yes, I’ll be in Berlin from the 11th to the 18th, with daily festival reports.

wow man comparing this to miral is a crime.

i think the recent foreign film winner that best resembles this film is Lives of the Others.
Obviously the story is nowhere near similar, but in terms of being “traditional cinema at peak form” it kinda reminded me of that film.

A rough translation of RJL’s comment:

From the Rockies in Canada: Incendies is one of four films (the others are Black Swan, The King’s Speech and Burlesque) that I want to see this year. But with no cinema here — and worse still, the local DVD shop closed down last week — when will I get to see it? If anyone has a screener to send me, I’d be grateful.

“Incendies” is my pick to win the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. Although I haven’t picked a Foreign Film winner correctly since “Tsotsi”.

As for “Dogtooth”- it’s an odd little film. I certainly didn’t dislike it. It has some great symbolism andI think it grows on you and improves with conversation. The film will be a real turnoff to most people. The camera work is jarring at times (how many scenes feature the actors with their heads out of frame?), the themes are button-pushing and there were a few times I was grossed out and had to look away. I saw it last weekend with two friends and they both hated it. Although the imagery sticks with you for a while, in the end, it’s just too “out there” to make much of an impact with the general population. The best words I can use to describe it are groundbreaking and unusual.

Actually, I prefer the trailer on the film’s website at http://incendies-thefilm.com/#/trailer .

The editing is much better, and it doesn’t overuse the classical-sounding song, which in the film you only hear over the credits.

It is an amazing film…and I’ve seen “Incendies” four times. If it wins, and I hope it does, it would be the best foreign-language film to win the Oscar since “The Lives of Others.”

I’m sure you don’t mean it that way, but that’s not saying much, is it? ;)
