BOX OFFICE: ‘King’s Speech’ goes wide after guild wins

It looks like “The King’s Speech,” which went much wider this weekend, could quietly become a $100-million grossing movie.  Meanwhile, that re-expansion for “The Social Network” didn’t make much of a dent and it seems increasingly unlikely it’ll cross that mark, leaving “Black Swan,” “Inception,” “Toy Story 3,” “True Grit” and potentially “The Fighter” as the only Best Picture nominees to ultimately get there.

In more depressing news, “The Way Back” will barely make $3 million when all is said and done.

I went to see The Way Back…so I did my part.

I’m sitting here getting ready for an orchestra performance and as I read the words “The Fighter”, the oboe gave us our tuning note, reminding me of that movie’s excellent second trailer.

I never would have predicted that a film about psycho ballerinas and a Western would gross $100 million before a Facebook movie.

Very true. I actually thought Black Swan was going to flop.

Just ecstatic for all the prime Oscar contenders.

And True Grit has finally passed Little Fockers. Yay!

The box office story of Black Swan is historic. A milestone for “arty” psychologic dramas/thrillers (please, people, it is NOT a horror film).
    A true phenomenom.

It just opened in Denmark. I can’t remember the last time people wrote this much about a film on Facebook. It’s a true phenomenon here as well. It got better reviews here than The Social Network.

Who ever thought it would cross 100 million? True Grit becoming this big a deal, as well. Before these films, The Wrestler and No Country were considered Aranofsky’s and The Coens’s masterpieces but didn’t have the amazing impact in theatres… This time, wow: Box office history!

“In three weeks, Weinstein Co. is planning to expand the movie to more than 3,000 theaters –- unusually wide for a small, low-budget picture -– and launch an ad campaign around Valentine’s Day.

It’s far from obvious given that there’s no romantic tension in the movie. But Weinstein said a campaign timed for the Feb. 14th holiday will encourage people to “see it with the person who inspired you and changed your life.”

I have to ask — in what way is The King’s Speech aggressive climb to $100 million and probably beyond quiet? If The Social Network team’s endless pimping struck you as gaudy, what do you make of this?

The box office is in a weird state right now…lots of smaller films are proving to have strong legs and are slowly accumulating hefty purses, while the “made-to-be-blockbuster” movies are under-performing. I’m especially happy to see how well “True Grit” and “Black Swan” are doing.

6-It is SO a horror film. How is it not one? It tries to scare, frighten, and creep you out at every moment possible.

I just wish Blue Valentine had more buzz to ride. It’s somehow playing in my small college town in Virginia. I’ve already seen in it DC back when it was very limited release, but i never imagined it would make it down here, and got about 10 friends to see it last night. I’m hoping it gains some word of mouth and eventually makes some bank.

Oh, and The Way Back is somehow playing here too, so i will be sure to check that out sometime this week…before it probably goes away.

There’s no need to worry for Blue Valentine. It cost a mere $1m to make, and it has already earned over $6m. That’s the equivalent of a $20m movie making $120m, and well beyond the point of being profitable. Everything from here on out is just icing on the cake.

TKS weirdly managed to both make more money than last weekend and drop a ranking on the chart.

Why is that weird? There were two new films opening.

Thank you Kris for pointing out “The Way Back.” Very disappointing, but I’m glad I was able to catch that fine film in theaters-in another decade, that film would have swept the Oscars and Weir would have nailed best director.

127 Hours had a nice boost over last weekend, although it isn’t generating as much money as the other nominees it’s still nice to see interest renew. At the SAGS tonight I watched a nice TV spot for the movie, very fresh compared to the old ones, so I hope it keeps performing better during the next weeks.

Black Swan has performed amazingly well, I’m happy for Aronofsky, he needed a commercial success!

Pretty remarkable that King’s Speech will probably pass Social Network given the subject matters of the two films, how much media attention Social Network got at its release, and that Social Network is rated PG-13. Really shows how big a crowd pleaser King’s Speech is.

I think The Way Back has to be on of the most botched releases in a while and I can start to see why the producers were considering direct to dvd given how poorly it did theatrically. Perhaps they should have just started in limited release and hoped to build positive buzz, since Newmarket clearly didn’t have enough money for an ad campaign (I never saw a single trailer, tv ad, or poster for the film) to support as wide a release as they were going for and I bet most theatres will dump the film after this week.
