Kris, do you think “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” has to be a big hit at the box office in order to have a chance at winning Best Picture?

I’m not Kris, David, but I’ll give you my thought. I don’t think Benjamin Button needs to win the weekend, necessarily … I haven’t seen the projections, yet, but I imagine Marley and Me will do that. It does, however, need to get on the radar, and the film better turn a profit. I recall this being a very expensive movie to make — the special effects will show us that much, I hope — but I just can’t imagine the Academy giving it Best Picture love if it doesn’t hit the populace in the way it was intended.

This was a film, from the beginning, with Best Picture intentions. If you set that goal, then you have to both meet the critics expectations and do well in the box office to be considered a success. A movie like Slumdog just needs the critics, and a movie like Dark Knight depends most on its box office success. Movies like BB need both. Double-edged sword if I’ve seen one…

Well-spoken, McGuff. This year’s BP nominees, with the way things are going, will be interesting ones indeed.

Just saw “Benjamin Button,” and it’s nothing short of spectacular, mesmerizing, haunting, beautiful. There was a huge audience at my screening today, and an even bigger hoard waiting outside the theater. Count this one in.

I saw it as well today and it was basically sold out. I wasn’t left cold like some critics.

Yeah, I was surprised to see Defamer predict that ‘Bedtime Stories’ would take the weekend. Their box office predictions are usually okay, but it seemed like a battle between Button and Marley to me. Glad to hear the right movie might be prevailing.

Idk McGuff, the line for Marley & Me was big. I don’t see anything special with that movie considering all the 100 movies coming out this week. I think its pretty much assured that “The Spirit” will bomb. Terrible reviews/buzz + Wrong date to open= box office bomb
