POLL: Does ‘Revolutionary Road’ deserve the precursor shaft?

Written by

We need a new poll.  The last one might have helped turn this place into a “Dark Knight” vs. “WALL-E” battlefield, but with that in mind, I should point out the results were “The Dark Knight” by a hair.

But with John’s recent piece on the season’s snubbing of “Revolutionary Road,” aside from some notices here and there from critics groups and the HFPA, and with the film opening in two days (so you’ll all have your own opinion on it), I thought I’d ask the readership: Is the film getting the shaft this Oscar season?

This is the time for a film that is dwindling to turn on the afterburners and leap back into the thick of it, so give your answer some serious thought.  Does “Revolutionary Road” deserve more consideration than it’s received or does it belong in the also-ran column it seems to be headed toward?  Tell us in the sidebar poll!

Well it is getting the precursor shaft thus far – that’s undeniable. If you mean WILL it get the Oscar shaft as well, I say no.

P.S. is “Revolutionary Road” coming out wide this Friday, or only in LA/NY?

I should say, does it deserve to. Let me clarify that.

I feel it deserves to be in cotention .

Yes, it opens only in 2 theaters in NY and one in L.A. …very limited :)

True, Helena. I guess I should allow for that kind of thing. Sorry about that. :)

I’m excited, I got free screening tickets here in Chicago to see it on January 2. Keep the poll up til then, and I can promise an opinion!

Yeah, I’ll keep this one running through the holidays.

    Kris,

Glad you are going to keep the poll going through the holidays, as I know my friends are anxious to see it, but, unlike me, they won’t have the opportunity to do so to either Jan 2nd or Jan 9th.

I’m just glad I lucked into an early screening :)

The question is a bit illogical, since the majority of us haven’t seen the movie, and the quality of the movie for me (I can’t speak for others) determines whether I think a movie should or should not be snubbed.

Which is why I’m keeping it open through the holidays, Big. It opens limited Christmas Day after all. Not the least timely of polls or anything.

I’m amazed that Michael Shannon is getting snubbed. I thought for sure he was our runner up this year.

I thought this happened every year with the precursors — mostly the Globes, but occasionally the guilds and critics associations. They favor the films that come out late (3rd/4th week of December) and ignore the films that come out even later.

The glut of films — prestige and otherwise — coming out around Christmas Day 2008 is embarrassing. Especially since the pickings were so slim the week after Thanksgiving.

    Hey McGuff,

I too am from the Chicago area, very curious how you won those tickets? Any others floating around? Thanks a bunch..

Much like “Atonement” last year, after seeing this film I thought to myself that the hype leading up to this film might carry it to an Oscar Nom but I won’t agree with it. In my opinion, “Into the Wild” got snubbed big time and I feel the same way about “The Wrestler” and whichever film doesn’t get it due to a possible “Revolutionary Road” Nom like a “Frost/Nixon” or “The Dark Knight.”

I don’t think the film is deserving of nominations & awards at all except for some of the performances and ironically these are the two performances that get little awards attention – Michael Shannon and Leonardo DiCaprio, who delivers a beautiful and complex performance – unlike Kate Winslet’s work, which feels mechanical and too reminiscent of her earlier work – especially in Little Children. The film is really underwhelming and doesn’t do justice to the film, though some details are really appealing. I liked some scenes and there was the mood I liked, but as a whole the film disappoints.

I just saw it. I think it’s a brilliant film. And Kate Winslet, who I despised in The Reader, gives a harrowing and honest performance and worthy of the Oscar. Leo and Shannon are equally great. It’s a heartbreaking horror movie about conflicting emotional realities and dreams running wild. It has equal humor and dread, beautiful cinematography and the most unfiltered performance moments of the year.

Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet give the two best performances of the year and the fact that they were snubbed is just shocking. I’ve never seen Leo this good and had he been nominated, he would have won.
