WGA gives leg up to ‘Please Give,’ ‘Phillip Morris’

Well, we all knew the WGA would have a unique slate of nominations, given the list of ineligibilities this year (which included “Another Year,” “Blue Valentine,” “Biutiful,” “The Ghost Writer,” “The King’s Speech,” “Love & Other Drugs,” “Made in Dagenham,” “Never Let Me Go,” “The Way Back” and “Winter’s Bone,” among others).

I was expecting to see “The Fighter” slide onto the list in the wake of that purge, as well as “The Town” (which adds to SAG and PGA recognition with this nomination).  But I didn’t think Nicole Holofcener’s “Please Give” would make the cut (though Anne mentioned it as a possibility in Friday’s Oscar Talk), and I definitely didn’t see “I Love You Phillip Morris” coming (which is one of my favorite adaptations of the year).  Interesting that it was another Roadside Attractions released that filled in for “Winter’s Bone.”

We’ve still got the USC Scripter finalists on the way later today. (NOTE: I’ve just been notified that the Scripter finalists will be revealed tomorrow.) Tomorrow, the Art Directors Guild will announce nominees, followed by the Cinema Audio Society on Wednesday.  Check out the full list of WGA screen nominees at The Circuit.

Nice to see nominations for both Please Give and I Love You Phillip Morris, two of the most overlooked and underrated films of the year.

It seems easy to imagine The King’s Speech will replace Please Give at the Oscars in the Original Screenplay category. The adapted category seems a bit more open-ended though, with Toy Story 3 and Winter’s Bone being two strong contenders for Oscar nominations. Feels like the last two slots are a mirror of the Best Picture race with The Town, 127 Hours and Winter’s Bone fighting it out.

Dang, I picked the wrong comedy! Please Give was awfully good, though. And now I totally have to see I Love You Phillip Morris (which premieres locally this Friday).

Kris The Town did not have SAG recognition, unless you mean Renner.

Social Network, Black Swan, Fighter, Kids Are All Right have all scored with the SAG,PGA & WGA. This would perhaps silence people doubting the chances of Kids Are All Right. The first three could end up scoring with the DGA as well, making them the Top 3 with across the board support.

Please Give is an inspired choice. The movie is genuinely funny and a liked it a lot. The writing was very good indeed.

    That’s exactly what I mean.

I actually consider The Town missing out on a SAG ensemble nomination a bigger blow against it than Renner’s nomination being a plus. So I’m with red_wine on that one, if that’s what he meant.

That said, a PGA and WGA nomination is more than enough wind in its sails, SAG ensemble nomination be damned.

Rabbit Hole should have been the replacement for Adapted Screenplay.

Loving that “Phillip Morris” citation. Definitely one of the highlights of the season.
