I really feel bad for the girl who’s announcing. She’s really going in circles now, waiting for the announcers.

Feel free to announce the nominees here as I have to step out in a bit and won’t be able to put up a proper post.

Damn, I missed the whole damn announcement by mere seconds! Gotta wait for the list to get out then..

I heard most of them just moments ago via Indiewire. One big surprise? Two nominations for The Last Exorcism, which I actually liked well enough, but never imagined would earn any noms from any committees.

Julianne Moore and Ryan Gosling snubbed. But both Annette Bening and Michelle Williams nominated.

They really liked Greenberg! Both Gerwig and Stiller nominated and I think it also got in for best film.

Yes, Greenberg got in! Big surprise.

Yeah, I was a bit miffed (though not surprised) that Greenberg’s script and Gerwig’s performance have been completely absent from all Oscar discussion, but at least they got some attention here.

And my man, John Hawkes, who for some inexplicable reason isn’t even being mentioned by msot pundits, got a nomination for his great work in a supporting role in Winter’s Bone.

Very happy with a lot of the choices.

Interesting: JC Mitchell, Kidman, Eckhart, but no ‘RH’ Best Feature. Still, it’s well liked, for sure.

No Gosling: must have been close. But glad Williams keeps Blue Valentine in the mix.

Bening vs. Portman … oh, boy.

John Hawkes, yay!!!! Watching ‘Perfect Storm as I speak’.

Typing from memory the Best Picture nominees include

    127 Hours
    Black Swan
    Winter’s Bone
    The Kids Are Alright

And I think directing nominees were for

    127 Hours
    Black Swan
    Winter’s Bone
    The Kids Are Alright
    Rabbit Hole

The Big news were the 6 Best actress nominees.

How did Blue valentine get shut out except Williams? I liked Greenberg, but come on to place it about BV is idiotic.

Very weird that Robert Duvall wasn’t nominated as Get Low was nominated for both supporting actor and first feature!

    Duvall snub?

    Not good.

A surprise no Rabbit hole for Best picture.

Solid bunch of nominees. Very happy to see Greenberg getting so much love, since it’s not going to get a whole lot of that from here on out. Nice to see Please Give getting the ensemble award too, an overlooked gem.

Oddest omission has to be Robert Duvall in Get Low, particularly since Bill Murray made the cut and it got a Best First Feature nomination, as well as looking at the ones who were nominated. Oh, and Michelle Williams being the sole nominee for Blue Valentine is rather odd too.

The ceremony could not be more awkward by the way. Renner was probably the worst offender. Stupid laugh during monogamy. Kissing noises during “Kisses” and dismisive awesome after “Exploding girl” was announced. Meh.

And personally, I’m just glad they didn’t snub Aronofsky again like they did for “The Wrestler”.

I’m also most surprised by the Duvall snub.

this is a very, very mainstream nominee list for the ISA. no especially small pics made it through to the top, and the best actress category could be a near carbon copy of what we’ll see in two months time at the kodak (with the gerwig exception — disappointed there couldn’t be a BSA case made for that performance, unsurprised, but glad to see her getting love from her community in what is a big leap for her)

I’m really happy about the love for John Hawkes in Supporting Male.

Oh, and Dale Dickey… I didn’t even notice she was nominated the first time around, but great for her too.

    @Steve,

One could argue that it’s simply a sign of the times, though. Films like 127 Hours and Black Swan would’ve probably been made at a higher budget in better economic times, but with things being the way they are, they are being done as cheaply as possible.. The same for all these mainstream actors, they simply want to make artful films, and right now this is within the budget range they can even be made.. That’s personally why I think the nominees seem even more “mainstream” than usual.

Maybe Tapley and Thompson will finally feel compelled to discuss John Hawkes’ chances for an Oscar nomination.

I just found out how much the people behind this site love Moulin Rouge.

    That is unfortunate.

I would say that it’s a triumph stylistically, if not story-wise. But then I remembered that its style made me bored and nauseous. On an unrelated note, anyone know a good place to buy cheap fireworks this time of year?

    @Graysmith,

This might certainly be true. But I think we’ve seen most years that the ISA’s flip our expectations to see such Hollywood-centric names completely filled the boards. We’re all shocked to see a Greta Gerwig in there, but even she will be seen co-starring with Natalie Portman (in a studio rom com) and Russell Brand in the coming year. A Tarra Riggs or even Summer Bishil, she is not. Even “Winter’s Bone” (the ‘smallest’ of the Best Feature nods) has very respectable BO performance and a well-publicized campaign. I was surprised to not see more of a, let’s say, Lena Dunham presence throughout the list.
