Taking questions for Oscar Talk

You know what to do.  PLEASE KEEP IT TO JUST ONE QUESTION, and avoid asking the same thing others have posed in previous weeks.  We don’t always get to everything, but let’s keep it fluid, progressive.  Give us something to think about.  Go!

    Speaking of “Oscar bait”:
Now that “For Colored Girls” has been released, looking back how do you feel about all the time people spend considering the film’s Oscar chances?

In other words, in retrospect, is it really that suprising that the film, is not in fact a real contender after all? If it isn’t, then what made people who cover Oscars write articles about a film that has been directed who never had any creal critical successes?

Was it the subject matter, the recent success of Precious or was it the belief that this time out Perry was making a film with one eye on the Oscars?

Common consensus is that critics have played a bigger part in the race over the last few years. What will the critics champion at the end of the year that the Academy might be influenced into voting for that they probably wouldn’t otherwise?

What elements does a film have to have, to be considered “Oscar bait” before anyone sees it, and does it actually mean anything anymore?

What do you think Lionsgate has to do for For Colored Girls to get the academy to see it?

And do any of you see it yet?

Do you REALLY think Bening’s subtle, boarder-line support role in an Indie comedy will be enough to make her win? Sure she’s overdue, but Portman’s performance is supposedly what Oscars are made for.

Doesn’t this sound like Bridges in ’09 all over again? Overdue Oscar for a role not very indicative of the actor’s ability?

    Or.

Disney’s mounting a real OSCAR campaign for TOY STORY 3.

    Possibility? Or waste of money?

    Now or never, right?

  8. Cordy Avatar

Do you think Toy Story 3 would have had a chance at a nomination in a year of 5? It seems that it is in the top 5 of everyone’s predictions, and even though I know this is because it is a certainty with the 10, would it be in the discussion otherwise?
And now that Disney has revealed a very concerted effort for best picture, with a very creative campaign, do you think it has any chance to actually win? especially since it might place highly on ballots?

If Portman wins Best Actress, will it be the first of her kind to win? I mean she as the lead actress in a psychological thriller that contains all of these thriller/horror-like elements. I think of Catherine Deneuve in Repulsion and Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby when I think of Portman’s performance, and they were not even nominated.

Considering the recent news that Disney will be campaigning for Toy Story 3 to win Best Picture, why hasn’t anybody considered Lee Unkrich as even a remote possibility for a best director nomination? Does Hollywood generally perceive that animated films direct themselves? And if the film fails to receive nominations in both director and editing, should we even consider it in the running?

When you look back at this decade, what do u believe are the films that best reflect the mentality and state of society today and do these films drastically contrast with the oscar best picture winners of the 00’s?

    Or:

What film will benefit the most from guilds or the critics awards?

Not a question, but True Grit gets PG-13 “for some intense sequences of western violence including disturbing images”. There was some discussion about what would happen with this, so FYI.

Could a late surge for “The Way Back” mean both Colin Farrell and Ed Harris make it in, upsetting say Andrew Garfield or Mark Ruffalo?

Blake: An animated film has never been nominated in editing.

Kris: Are animated films not eligible for the editing category? I realize the Academy doesn’t necessarily have the most respect for the animated form, but…

Not sure if this question is worth returning and it might be better to address it when the dvd is released December 7th, but is there any chance Inception could miss out?

I’m also wondering if Black Swan has a real shot at Best Picture, but I’ll save that closer to its release.

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” comes out this weekend, and don’t worry about me raving about how it could be nominated for Best Picture. I’m much more concerned with Alexandre Desplat’s chances for Best Original Score. I know he’s a pretty safe bet for “The King’s Speech”, but his work on the new “Potter” film is arguably amongst his best work. I want to know what you two think on the matter, whether you have seen the film yet or not.

With the word we’re hearing about Christian Bale, with the word that’s been Geoffrey Rush since Toronto, and now the big support for the veteran [and the nominated, but hasn’t won] Ed Harris, could Best Supporting Actor be turning into the most compelling of the acting races?

Also, what are your thoughts on Blue Valentine and its chances in above the line categories (specifically the two leads) with the NC-17 death-knell attached to it? Are the Weinsteins just going to use this controversy as positive promotion and will the Academy bite like they usually do for them?

  18. John Gilpatrick Avatar

Could you envision a scenario in which a film gets a Best Picture nomination without getting nominated in any other categories? Blind Side and A Serious Man only had one other nomination a piece last year. Any 2010 titles that could make it into the Ten without any other recognition?

    I like John Gilpatrick’s question.

Also: could the Globes bring some attention to non-contenders, particularly in the Comedy categories? For example, I recall you saying that the HFPA loved “Nowhere Boy”. Could something like that, if it dominates the comedy categories (even though it’s nowhere near a comedy nor a musical), sneak in at the Oscars? Also, while we’re at it, how is the comedy/drama designation decided at the Globes?

Saw Blue Valentine last week, loved the film and the performances.

How has this film been received in industry screenings so far? Is there a chance the Academy will embrace it, allowing it to get to a wider audience despite the NC-17 (people will seek out an Oscar film regardless of rating)?

At my screening, there were many elderly guild members, who all seemed to love it despite the harsh reality of the story.

In contrast, my girlfriend saw it at USC a few weeks back, and the audience was apparently split.

    Thoughts?

What’s the early word on “Burlesque”. Could it sneak into some of the tech categories and maybe a chance for Cher?

I don’t think this has been covered at all in other episodes, but I am curious to know where you and Anne stand on Nolan getting a director nod. I know you’re skeptical, but I was looking at the Gurus of Gold charts and you are one of the very few who aren’t predicting him for a Best Director nod. I hope this topic doesn’t sound repetitive, but I’m genuinely curious to hear some discussion on his chances. I myself am not convinced of the Coens or Peter Weir right now, I think the five directors, based on consisten buzz and such will be

    Tom Hooper
    Danny Boyle
    David Fincher
    Christopher Nolan
    Darren Aronofsky.

Aronofsky is the only one I could see getting moved out, but again, very hungry for some discussion on the matter, especially in regards to Nolan.

    Thanks!

Hindsight is 20/20, Maxim. It was a move to a prime awards season release. Most of us, Anne and I included, were always clear that the film would get the campaign treatment because Perry has done well by Lionsgate. I think pretty much all coverage of its awards potential included the same modest skepticism.

It seems to me that Lesley Manville would be a shoo-in for Best Supporting Actress in an absolutely tremendous performance. What are the odds that voters put her in that category based on wanting her to win rather than Best Actress because she (Debatably) has the role fitting that category, but where she has a much tougher time with Bening and Portman, etc.?

Also, if either The Fighter of True Grit don’t live up to expectations, is Another Year next on the list to move into the Top Ten?

Do you think Adams and Leo might cancel each other out for a win, or even nominations, in the supporting actress category? Looks like word on the web is pretty split on who was better. If so, who do you see as the frontrunner there?

I’ve noticed Julianne Moore campaigning hard for The Kids Are Alright. She’s at every international film festival wearing schmatta after schmatta.

The other night she was on the Tonight Show and Leno closed the interview with, “Come back when you win.”

Where the hell is Annette Bening this season? Could we all be surprised and see Moore take home the gold on her fifth nomination?

    SMART QUESTION ALERT!

If there’d be any justice in the world, “Mother and Child” would be nominated for a couple of Oscars! Which is YOUR favorite 2010 film that has NO chance at receiving any Oscar nominations???

[however it goes, please no more questions about The Way Back :D ]

Last year at this point, we had 4 movies that were not yet seen (Avatar, The Lovely Bones, Invictus, and Nine), and only one of them survived and made it to the Top-10. From the movies that have not been “seen” yet, which one you think will make it? True Grit? The Fighter? How do you know? Tron Legacy?…

Reading all this stuff about Disney “going for the gold” for Toy Story 3 and other studios “going all out” for movies like The Town, I was wondering about how much money they splurge in these campaigns; do they eventually gain something back (a kind of profit) that justifies their “investment”? In other times I would figure the prestige the awards bring to the people involved could be enough, but seeing our recent economy and how many good to excellent movies even struggle to get picked up, the whole situation strikes me as a weird curiosity.

Warning: this question is morbid as hell, but I urge you not to get too offended. Ronni Chasen was hard at work promoting Michael Douglas for a Wal Street 2 nomination, do you think news of her death is only likely to add on to sympathy votes that Douglas would have received anyways?

127 HOURS seems to be on most Best Picture lists, but I rarely hear that this film will win. Is this because there’s a feeling Danny Boyle already has his statues? Do you guys truly believe that SOCIAL NETWORK and KING’S SPEECH are “better movies.” If 127 was directed by someone “overdue,” i.e. Fincher, would things be different?
