Paramount is showing David O. Russell’s “The Fighter” to press tomorrow night on the lot, but this morning brings a curious announcement that the film will have a “secret” AFI Fest screening tonight.  I may give it a shot.  The press release, in part:

AFI FEST 2010 presented by Audi announced today that it will screen THE FIGHTER, from director David O. Russell, and starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Melissa Leo, for festival attendees tonight at 9:30 p.m. at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.

Admission to the screening is available to AFI FEST 2010 passholders and the general public through online ticket reservations at AFI.com/AFIFEST and the AFI FEST box office at Hollywood & Highland from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., on a first-come, first served basis. The Rush Line will begin forming at 8:30 p.m. All attendees are invited to walk the red carpet for the screening.

Despite my recent disenchantment with Wahlberg, I’m hoping this one turns out to be a really good movie. Let us know what you think if/when you see it.

I’ll be there. I was hoping that they would announce that the screening was going to be of True Grit, but this is exciting too!

I’m a big Christian Bale fan so I can’t wait.

True Grit is still not finished.

Has there been any verification one way or another on whether Grit’s running time is around or slightly below the ninety minute mark?

For what it’s worth, I just watched the original True Grit. I found it fine; ditto John Wayne. But the first half of the movie stunk. I think it will be a struggle for the Coens to make Gold out of the source material. I think it will be a challenge. Though, if anyone can do it, it could be them.

Roy: I’ve been told 140 minutes so not sure what that’s all about.

Thanks Kris, was just a rumour I’d read in the comments section here and on another site a few weeks back. 140 minutes sounds more realistic alright

For the record, True Grit and Cowboys and Aliens are NOT the same movie.

“True Grit is still not finished.”

Coens need to tell Roderick Jaynes to hurry it up then :D.

The final length should be announced at the time we get the MPAA rating.

I think the trajectory of this thread says it all:

(The Dude + Jason Bourne) x The Coen Brothers > David O. Russell + (Batman x Dirk Diggler)

I’m curious about the state of embargoes on this one. I find my interest in the film is dwindling outside of Christian Bale’s performance, which is odd because for a while I was completely on board with this film. Hopefully we hear something really soon because the film’s buzz needs to get going soon if Paramount really wants it to be a major contender (no pun intended).
