BOX OFFICE: ‘Megamind’ outsmarts ‘Due Date’

Keep forgetting to post these.  “For Colored Girls” opened to respectable numbers, per the usual for Perry.  I never saw the film because suddenly there was a cone of silence from the studio on invites (make of that what you will) and I didn’t much feel like chasing it down.

“Secretariat” is holding okay.  “Red” even better.  Go Malkovich.

Kris, how do you feel about the weird McNabb benching?

Looks like The Town finally got bumped from the top ten, as expected. The film did remarkably well, considering that it’s been out for nearly two months.

I gotta say all the openings this week were right on expectations, with the holiday season coming up (a boost for family films) and the best reviews of any of the wide releases this week I expect Megamind to have better legs than the other two.

While I didn’t care for either movie, it certainly is impressive how Secretariat and RED have been holding on.

James: What can you say? It’s bewildering. I’d like to think it’s some weird way of sending a message to the team but at what cost?

I do wonder.. Red a GG nominee for Best Comedy/Musical and Malkovich for Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical?

I was putting together some first predictions for the Golden Globes.. It’s a pretty pathetic year for comedy, can’t believe how hard it was to come up with five plausible Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical contenders..

Secretariat is holding on more than okay. It has now quadrupled its opening weekend gross, which is pretty amazing for a film that seemed like it was a flop after opening weekend. It may not be enough to get it back into the Best Picture nominations race, but it’s certainly looking far better off now than it did after its first weekend.

Oh, and since it wasn’t listed in the article: 127 Hours made $266,000 in four theaters, while Fair Game did an excellent $700,000 in 46 theaters ($15,000/theater). I’m not particularly surprised about 127 Hour’s success, but I gotta say I’m a bit amazed how well Fair Game managed to do. Even with Penn and Watts, it just seemed so below the radar in every regard. Good for them.

I think the real winner this week was 127 Hours! $266K in 4 theaters is pretty damn good! I saw Megamind and loved it, while Due Date was… meh at best.

I could see Robert Downey Jr getting a nomination for Due Date at the GG I wasnt to fond of the movie but the GG love him

Wilson, I was actually thinking the opposite. I could see Zach Galifianakis nominated at the GGs for Due Date, not Downey. Downey has the straight man role, while Galifianakis is the one who provides the vast majority of the humour.

True, the Golden Globes are starfuckers, but I really can’t see them nominate Downey for such a straight-man role.

Fantastic Mister Fox made $265,900 in four theatres one year ago (November 13th-15th to be exact). Can’t wait to see how 127 Hours does as it expands.

I thought both The Social Network & The Town would be 100 million dollar films. But it now seems both will miss.

I can’t imagine The King’s Speech, Another Year, True Grit, Made In Dagenham, Secretariat and The Way Back will be 100 million dollar films. The Fighter & 127 Hours might be. So that means currently only Inception, Shutter Island and Toy Story 3 are the candidates with 100 million.

Box office wise, this is much worse than last year when half the nominees had cleared that bench mark.

  13. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

Nice insight there, red_wine. I still say take Shutter seriously.

  14. Loyal Avatar

    Toy Story 3 – $414,288,000
    Inception – $291,130,914
How To Train Your Dragon – $217,581,231 (no longer in theatres)
Shutter Island – $128,012,934 (no longer in theatres)
    The Town – $89,774,000
    The Social Network – $85,047,000
    Secretariat – $50,965,000
    Hereafter – $28,730,0009
    For Colored Girls – $20,100,000
The Kids Are Alright – $20,811,365 (no longer in theatres)
    Winter’s Bone – $6,213,942
    Waiting for Superman – 5,399,000
    Conviction – $4,721,000
    Inside Job – $970,000
    Fair Game – $700,000
    127 Hours $265,925

Last year, the 10 BP nominees made a total of 1,515,443,225 pre-Oscar nomination (2/2/09).

I think success should be considered in the context of the film though. Few films are destined to be $100m+ grossers, even at their most successful. If last year had more $100m+ grossers in the Best Picture lineup all that means is that more mainstream films were among the best of the year.

Consider The Kids Are All Right with its $20.8m gross. It may seem paltry, but it will provide a very nice return on investment for that $4m movie. Percentage-wise, it’s like a $50m movie making $260m.

Box office is mostly just important to the films that weren’t as successful otherwise. If The Hurt Locker proved something last year, its that box office ultimately isn’t important if you have that kind of acclaim. On the other end of the spectrum, it’s easy to imagine that a film like The Blind Side probably wouldn’t have been a BP nominee if it’d only made $50m. It made up for its lack of acclaim with being a box office phenomenon.

127 Hours will never make $100 mil. $25 mil would be an achievement.

I can’t see The Fighter topping $70 mil.

Due Date could’ve been funnier, but does anyone else think Galifianakis is a fine dramatic actor? He had some potent scenes.

Wow, look at Red. Really sticking in there. Hmm, The Social Network may not be the audience and critic favorite that I thought it was. I was hoping by this point it could crack 100 considering the film was number 1 for solid weeks.

I didn’t see anything this week. 127 Hours won’t open near me for another 2 weeks. Maybe I’ll get around to Due Date at some point merely for the fact I do find Downey and Galifanakis funny. Might see Megamind as a family flick in the future.

I’m not the best at these box office numbers but it sure looks like The Social Network will have a hard time passing the 100 mil. mark. I thought it would do that easily.

Red Wine-well we can’t always have international record-breakers in ever years race.

I do think there is a chance for True Grit to hit the 100 million mark.

The Social Network has nearly quadrupled its opening weekend gross.. It’s hard to imagine it doing much better than it has, especially if you look at the weekend-to-weekend drops. Yes, it probably won’t pass $100m at its current trajectory.. But it could happen if they put it back into theaters in mid-December to capitalize on presumed award wins and nominations.

Expanding on what red_wine and Kris said … I bought and showed ‘Shutter Island’ to my mom (age 57). She hates any movie that’s remotely scary, and she’s usually critical of Leo DiCaprio. When the movie ended, she turned to me (I was eager to hear her opinion) and said “now THAT was a good movie”. I was shocked, to say the least. She thought the story was great, thought Leo was great, and was completely surprised by the twists near the end. I wonder how many AMPAS members could surprise us, like she did me.

And while 20 mill looks good for Colored Girls, I’m sure it would have done gangbusters with 3,000 screens instead of 2,000. Why so low? Demographics, I guess?

    m1,

That can be said about all the other non-Oscar awards too. I still think it’s fun to talk about and speculate about the Globes, especially the comedy part of it.. It’s just a nice little diversion from the slog of waiting for the season to really get going.

Mcnabb is terrible. Easily the worst big name qb.

85 million for The Social Network is more than fine. I don’t know what people thought it was going to do

I agree with Rashad. TSN will most likely go over $90 mill dom. It’s doing very well overseas. I find it to be a rock solid success, moneywise.

And I still do enjoy the Golden Globes. It’s just nice to see everyone glammed up, mingling, boozy — I also like the variance of categoies, the different types of nominees, and the tv crowd, as well.

And finally, big WOW to the ‘Red’ and ‘Secretariat’ drops. Actually, to most of the drops this weekend.

Well, whether it makes sense or is fair or not, I think that $100 mil is the all-important barrier for films to reach. Frankly, I don’t think “Blind Side” was taken seriously until it reached $200. “The Town” is an automatic in if it breaks $100 mil (a long shot, but not unlikely if it gets a second wind). Of course, I thought “Hangover” was in for the same reason last year, so what do I know.

  31. Jacob S. Avatar

Drew: True Grit probably won’t do too well at Box Office. Coen Brothers movies don’t make much money and Westerns don’t make much money. Toss that in with a competitive release date and I’ll be shocked if it ever hits $30mil.

  32. Drew Avatar
    Drew

Jacob: No Country did about 75 million stateside. Granted, that did have ALOT of things helping it.

The fact that Paramount has moved up the release date of “True Grit” by three days has to show some level of confidence on their part. While it will have serious competition, ironically from another film head lined by Bridges, it could have great word-of-mouth as well as serious awards buzz to help push it along. I don’t think 100 million is out of the question.

this weekend I saw Secretariat in a quarter filled theater at a multiplex for the Step Moms b-day. and Get Low in a packed restored indie theater.

  34. Glenn Avatar

JJ1, they specifically target certain areas that have high african american populations, hence the lower theatre count.

“Last year, the 10 BP nominees made a total of 1,515,443,225 pre-Oscar nomination (2/2/09).”

That’s a bit of an unfair statistic since one of the last year’s nominees was the highest grossing film of all time.

  35. JJ1 Avatar
    JJ1

So, regarding demographics, if a movie like Colored Girls doesn’t do well in, say, Nebraska … it won’t play there because the studio loses money by sending it to the theater and theater fees than actually seeing if tickets get sold? I think it’s a gamble. But to me, I always think: play the movie, and maybe the people will show up. To me, the more theaters the better. Or am I completely misguided with the whole demogrpaphics/theaters available thing?

  36. Jacob S. Avatar
    Jacob S.

Put it this way, JJ1: I live in a town with a very low black population and with many upper-middle-class white Jews. For Colored Girls wasn’t playing in my local theatre because no one who lives here would want to watch it, so it’s a waste of effort if the movie played there.

    Interesting. Thanks, Jacob. :)

I guess it’s too much to ask for. I’m a 30 yr. old white guy who loves movies of all kind and would have been disappointed not to see it (if I lived in a highly populous white section), but that’s just me, I guess.
