Tonight, during the season finale of AMC’s “Made Men,” Paramount Pictures featured a two-minute trailer of sorts for “The Fighter.” It differs drastically in tone from the official trailer that hit a few weeks ago. Instead of the lofty hallmarks of a “Rocky”-esque feel-good experience, we get a more character-focused assemblage. Watch an embed of the trailer after the jump.

I thought the first trailer was great — this one looks like it goes deeper and made me want to see the film even more.
Its amazing how one excitement can go up when the marketing differs drastically like you said from a previous trailer.
This trailer gives an indication they might be a personality behind camera. Hell even on camera as well. I have a feeling we will hear alot more people interested in seeing it on the basis of this ad deceptive or not.
“Made Men” …. is that the one where Nucky Thompson recruits 1920’s Ad Men to sell the idea of booze to a dry country before Lucky Luciano whacks him?
^First of all, lol at Gareth.
Anywho… I really liked this trailer much more than the first. I was gonna see it regardless, but this makes it’s Oscar chances seem more likely.
I don’t know if it’s that much better of a trailer. It starts out well but the whole increasing loudness of the music with fast cuts seem more like from the thriller/horror playbook.
Don’t see this being more than a Supporting Actor nom and maybe Supporting Actress, still.
This is worlds better than the previous trailer, definitely excited for this now.
-Wahlberg looks pretty ok.
-Bale looks like the scene stealer.
-Leo looks good and showy.
-Adams looks good and subtle.
-Better trailer than the first, for sure, but I’m still hesitant on it’s quality and awards chances, and I don’t know why.
Why wouldn’t they put Leo name on, especially if they think she has a chance at nomination? She’s an Oscar nominee after all.
The only reason I would ever see this film at this point is Christian Bale. I don’t see anything else of much interest. Marky Mark looks dull as usual. Amy Adams just lacks the same spark as usual. I don’t even know anything about Melissa Leo.
Duncan: we’ll pretend you didn’t say that about Melissa Leo.
Yep, better.
Joe: I don’t know anything about Melissa Leo. What a terrible thing to say about a one time Oscar nominee. In my defense, she’s not exactly had a perfect track record.
“In my defense, she’s not exactly had a perfect track record.”
Neither has Christian Bale
I don’t know. To me this how a trailer is supposed to be done. If this a character drama, market it as such rather than your run of the mill Rocky story. I mean I get it. Its to get the asses in the seats, but we can probably presume this isn’t gonna be a huge box office hit. It might do reasonably well for a possible oscar contender, but I doubt it will generate much. Can’t wait to see it.
Watching this trailer, I couldn’t help but think how it would have looked if Darren Aronofsky stayed with the project.
The second thought that I had was that Christian Bale is really not that good of an actor, maybe knows it and makes up for it for his bodily transformations. I do him credit for the transformations though. Show real commitment and are almost scary.
P.S. Did anyone discuss this as a possible cinematography contender? (I am saying this mostly based off of the original trailer).
Pete…just no, no…Bale’s made a couple career hiccups, but this bloggers’ retrograde bashing of his talent is obvious and stupid.
See, Duncan, you knew that she was a one time Oscar nominee. When you said you didn’t know anything about her, I had to make sure you didn’t literally know nothing about her. Heck, I don’t know that much about her, but I can at least name three movies she’s recently been in. (Boy, did I smile when she showed up in “Everybody’s Fine”.)
Bale may be showy and he may go for the physical transformations but that doesn’t mean he lacks any talent as an actor. The Machinist, Rescue Dawn, The New World, The Prestige, and 3:10 to Yuma were all very good performances, and I’d argue that he was nothing short of great in Rescue Dawn, even if the movie was far from perfect.
Is there actual skepticism about Christian Bale’s ability as an actor. Has anyone seen his performance in a movie called: American Psycho?!?!? Seriously, wtf?
“The second thought that I had was that Christian Bale is really not that good of an actor, maybe knows it and makes up for it for his bodily transformations.”
This might be one of the single worst deductions I’ve ever read.
Agreed Kris. I would argue that Bale’s best work was in American Pscyho and The Prestige, neither of which involved drastic physical transformations. It was just really good acting, period.
