Lionsgate sets Nov. release for Perry’s ‘For Colored Girls’

The rumors were swirling around a potential fall release for Tyler Perry’s adaptation of the Ntozake Shange play “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the World is Enuf.”  Today, a release dropped announcing a November 5 release.  And, perhaps predictably, the film’s title has been shortened to “For Colored Girls.”

Guy pondered the awards possibilities of the title a few days back.  Could we have a player on our hands?  It’s the best bet Lionsgate has on its plate, and there are plenty female performances that could have the stuff.  Time will tell.  Check out a new image from the film after the jump.

I think at this point, it’s best shot might be for the performances, but I’m willing to give Perry a chance.

Anyone else notice the coincidence (sp?) that this is gonna be released on the same weekend that “Precious” was last year?

No coincidence. This was intentionally done to make people think it’s an awards contender, when it really isn’t.

The title’s been shortened?!? Dammit! It would have been awesome if he had just kept it the way it was. Plus, if it does score an Oscar nomination, the film would have tied with ‘Who is Harry Kellerman, and Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?’ for having the longest title of any nominated film in Academy history (assuming he puts his signature “Tyler Perry’s” possesive in there).

I agree that the longer title was better, but Robert, does he not only put ‘Tyler Perry’s” on the title when he is adapting his own stage plays?

Heads up, Kris: the title of the play is “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf”.

I have never seen a Tyler Perry film. I doubt this will be different, but we’ll see what happens.

Tyler Perry will HAVE to screen this for critics.

Curious only to see what Macy Gray will do. How could she possibly match her performances in “Training Day,” and “Shadowboxer?”

Maybe Claire Huxtable can get an Oscar nom. That’d be pretty cool.

I’ve never seen a Tyler Perry movie (in fact, only about half of his movies have received direct-to-dvd releases here as far as I am aware), but I sooo want to see this one. Even if it’s terrible I just want to see all those fabulous, talented women together. All of them so criminally underrated by Hollywood. And, yes, even Macy Gray who is certainly one of the more… electric singer-to-actors of recent years.

I doubt it’ll be very far in the awards race (it won’t have the critics behind it like Precious), but if it’s middlebrow enough like The Blind Side, makes enough money and gets enough press for its “look at all these talented black actors that Hollywood doesn’t want” hook then…. hmm… maybe?

Any info on the characters yet? I know they’re nameless, in keeping with the concept of the play, but what I’d love to know what conflicts and struggles each woman is experiencing, and a little about their personalities. My favorite actresses in the film are Kerry Washington, Kimberly Elise and Thandie Newton, so I’m particularly interested in the characters they portray.

They’re not nameless in the film, as is evident from the set of character posters that was recently released.

@ Guy Lodge: I was just about to post a comment retracting the part about namelessness, as I saw the promo pics on Lionsgate’s site after writing that. But thanks anyway for correction.
