Anne and I discuss “Toy Story 3” as the Best Picture category’s best bet coming out of the summer movie months in today’s Oscar Talk. Much of that has to do with critical approval, yes, but plenty has to do with the monstrous box office take the film has generated.
I’ve already written about the potential impact of something like that, but it’s worth pointing out that today the film will cross $1 billion worldwide, the second Disney film to do so this year (the other being “Alice in Wonderland,” which, well, wasn’t as well received critically, to put it mildly). And both films, by the way, are 3D efforts, so that crap isn’t going away for a while. I can’t wait for them to retrofit “True Grit” so we can see bullets whizzing at us off the screen.
Anyway, big news and a big congrats to this franchise for hitting virtually every mark perfectly on the way to assumed awards season glory.

I can’t think of a better animated film or animated film studio to win Best Picture.
I agree!!!
All i can say is congrats to such a worthy franchise. i strongly hope that they get what they deserve come Oscar time
I second Marc R.
Toy Story 4 before 2015. I would put money on it.
I guess now we can expect more movies with cute creatures facing peril only to be rescued by Deus Ex Machina.
Oh and it will be rated “G” as well.
Overrated entry in a great franchise.
Am I the only person who participates in the Oscar-blogosphere that thinks Toy Story 3 will be all but forgotten come Oscar-time? I can’t honestly put my finger on why, but I just don’t feel the same reverence for the film as the last couple Pixar endeavors. I think it’s an incredible piece of work, but I don’t see Oscar going for it in anything besides Best Animated Feature and perhaps Best Original Screenplay.
That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t be pleasantly surprised if I’m very very wrong.
**EDIT**
I keep forgetting that Toy Story 3 would be nominated for Best ADAPTED Screenplay. My apologies for the earlier oversight.
@MattyD
TS3 will likely remain the highest grossing movie of the year (unless TRON somehow becomes a sensation), and it will no doubt duke it out with The Illusionist for most of the animated feature prizes, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it won a couple of them in the Best Picture category. Plus, with all that money and the upcoming DVD/BD release, Disney will send it to voters and they will see it with their families over the holidays. So, I doubt it will be forgotten.
Also, “Toy Story 3” is likely to appear on many “best of the year” lists in December.
couldnt happen to a better movie, im hoping it passes alice in wonderland bye the end of its run
It makes me happy inside when quality movies do this well financially. It restores my faith somewhat in the film business. Congrats to Pixar!
