Wallach finally gets his

Written by

One of the easiest Honorary Oscars to peg was probably Eli Wallach’s (the recipients were announced this morning).  Many have in fact been waiting and waiting for some kind of AMPAS recognition for the esteemed character actor, and finally, it looks like he’ll get it.  So in honor of that:

This is fantastic! Not only a non-winner, but a non-nominee, which seems unfathomable having seen Baby Doll. He’s overdue for recognition. I’m really happy for Wallach–he deserves this.

Eli Wallach, with zero Oscar nominations, would’ve been suited for an Honorary Emmy or Tony win. Giving him (and repeat winner Francis Ford Coppola) an Honorary Oscar when a treasure like Doris Day goes another year without? For shame. No surprise to see you championing him.

But of course, just like last year, he won’t be honored AT the actual ceremony. Oh no, they have to make room for Taylor Lautner and Miley Cyrus to present and insipid skits.

    Idiots.

I fail to see what makes Doris Day more obviously worthy of recognition than Eli Wallach. Apples and oranges.

Richard: What does that even mean, “no surprise to see you championing him?” If you’re going to make a jab at least make it make sense…

    And what Guy said.

Oh Richard, you old curmudgeon. I love your work, but let go of that bitterness. They’ll never award you posthumously. You and poor Thelma Ritter, Irene Dunne, and Claude Rains will remain forever robbed.

Guy: Doris Day is a national treasure, you British twit.

Tapley: You champion the worst possible causes. Cheering on Wallach is just another to add to the list.

Actually, that was immature. I apologize. Stay here. Don’t go anywhere. Tell me the list of the “worst possible causes” and then tell me why the world ended because someone had the passion to champion them.

Eli Wallach is a terrific choice.

And that he is winning as someone who has primarily been a character and supporting actor (though of course he has major lead performances as well) is not only unusual but damn near unprecedented (Ralph Bellamy, who won as much for his other services to the industry, is the only precedent.

I just saw his small part in The Ghost Writer – he’s 94, yet totally owned the screen. The energy he conveyed that has always been part of his work was still front and center.

To take nothing away from Doris Day and others, Wallach is a great choice.

You know what that means: Goddard is this year’s Roger Corman.

    Absolutely ridiculous.

But, Mr Burton.. Aren’t you British as well?

Doris Day at least got a nomination. Wallach didn’t even get that. He probably deserved that and a win for Baby Doll alone. The only surprising thing is the fact that it’s taken the Academy this long to recognize him.

    Paulette Godard got an Oscar?

How the most influential director since Eisenstein and Griffith, who also is internationally widely regarded as brilliant, is a ridiculous choice is itself an absurd statement.

As much as I love Wallach, I’m totally dissapointed for this all-male selection. I would give this Oscar to Liv Ullman, Gena Rowlands and, above all, to Angela Lansbury.
