Craig Brewer’s rock and roll film

Some time ago I remember an interview or maybe just a bit of director Craig Brewer’s general PR patter that he was interested in making a series of films that reflect various styles of music.  “Hustle & Flow,” for instance, was his “rap film.”  “Black Snake Moan” was his “blues film,” and so on.

It came back to me immediately after I had the expected kneejerk “huh?” reaction to the news that he’ll be helming the long-gestating “Footloose” remake, but as I thought about it, it totally made sense.  This could be his “rock and roll” movie, and really, what better material to use than this?  A tale of finger-wagging adults warning the kids off of the devil’s music?  Perfect fit, really.

One thing is certain: Brewer is a much better choice than the parade of potential directors the project has boasted in recent years.  First reactions might be to recoil, but I find myself strangely game for this.

What about you?

    I’m actually interested.

I’m huge fan of Hustle and Flow, and was slightly disappointed by Black Snake Moan. But I was still waiting for Brewer to make something. For a while he was attached to a film called Gang Leader for a Day, which sounded interesting.

As for Footloose, I don’t know. I’ll try to remain optimistic.

I’m always vaguely intrigued when they bring someone with a clear vision on board for something like this. I’d much rather see his “baroque film” or his “zydeco film”, but I can dream.

Strangely, I never actually saw “Hustle & Flow,” but I wasn’t a fan of “Black Snake Moan” (one of those films that aspired to many things and never really succeeded at any of them), but I dunno, maybe he’d be a good fit for “Footloose” (which is a film I love).

“Hustle and Flow” took me completely by surprise (in a good way), and while “Black Snake Moan” was a bit disappointing it did have its redeeming qualities. There has never been a point where I’ve been interested in this “Footloose” remake…until now. Color me intrigued…

Craig Brewer is the only reason I’m excited for this! I love “Hustle and Flow” and “Black Snake Moan”, the latter to a lesser extent though.

I was thinking this might end up being his “dance-pop” movie, but I guess it will depend on what direction the music goes in.

I’m the other way around, “Hustle & Flow” was a bit disappointing, but “Black Snake Moan” was a hoot!
