I have a feeling that this is going to be this year’s Australia.

It can’t be THAT bad. The difference being that many awards prognosticators were annointing Australia long before it came out. Even Oprah got the female audience in a tizzy about it- only to see it fall flat. The point is, Australia was destined to fail based on the build-up. This film has no such circumstance. I think it will be good but cheesy- a paint by the numbers film. Even so, I enjoy a good period film, so I will see it. But let’s not kill the thing by comparing it to Australia- mercy. No magical aborigines here, please.

Variety trashed it today…

If it’s even half as good as “Australia” I’ll be happy.
Since Amelia has been one of the big “ifs” of the year, I find it quite funny that the first 2 reviews are one rave and one “meh”. So the question remains on what the general opinion will be. Not that it would have made a big difference if both critics had agreed but this is fun.
This trailer looks fine to me but so what?

I’ve been thinking for some time that there’s no way Amelia can lose a Cinematography nomination. Art Direction, Costume Design and Actress nominations also seem very probable… I wouldn’t be surprised if this films gets Best Sound Mixing and Best Picture nods too…

Can anything be as bad as “Australia”??? I’ll give credit to Swank – I don’t think she’d give as ludicrously over-the-top performance as Kidman’s in the first 45 minutes of Luhrmann’s fiasco. Also, this may be mean, but Swank has yet to cosmetically alter her face. Every Kidman close-up in “Australia” felt cruel – what happened to her???

Just checked out the reviews so far… Though decidedly mixed, they all share love for Christopher Eccleston – a truly underappreciated actor.
Whether or not Swank’s Earhart is Oscar-worthy, I do hope she’s nominated – just to see the other nominees sweat!
Adam Smith
Wait, I didn’t know The Doctor was in this movie.
Oh, well, still not seeing it.

Why does every one of these Australia mentions turn into a Kidman bash? I thought the film was quite lovely and Kidman typically strong. Did people actually watch the movie? As for Amelia, looking forward to it. Not super high on my list, but I like Mira Nair for the most part.

This trailer was so much better than the last. Makes me think there might still be some Oscar hope for this one.
The fact that you’re seeing this 5 days before it’s release into 800 theaters has me thinking that the studio isn’t that confident.
There always 1 dog to kick and this season Amelia is it.Everyone’s dying to see Swank fail.
Have they been using Explosions in the Sky for the trailers? No wonder its been reminding me so much of Australia.
@Andrew R: my thoughts exactly.
I don’t think i’ll even bother with this film.
