Perhaps the most predictable news of the season comes today by way of Anne Thompson at indieWIRE. She reports that Terrence Malick’s heavily anticipated film “The Tree of Life” will not be ready for release this year:
Apparition had tentatively scheduled a December 25 release for River Road’s 50s period film, which stars Sean Penn and Brad Pitt. But Apparition chief Bob Berney says that a year-end opening was “wishful. It’s definitely not going to come out this year.” That’s because it won’t be finished in time. Berney still hasn’t seen the film.
And…onward…

goddamn dinosaurs!
But yeah, we all saw it coming. Foolish to think we’d get The New World follow-up in the same decade. HA!
This throws a huge wrench into my Oscar predictions!!!! I was predicting it to win… oh wait…
Just kidding, but thank you for confirming this.
Gee, what a shocker!
Shit…yet another of my most anticipated films pushed back to next year.
Well, 2010 should be a blast anyway.
Damn was really looking forward to it, I wonder if they will a full year to set a Dec 10 release or open it maybe in Oct or Nov…
damn damn damn, just opened a spot though in my list, and moving on..
Well, shit, that means my top two most anticipated films of the year are now my top two most anticipated films of next year. I guess I’m still gonna get Scorsese and Malick in the same year, but it could’ve been Scorsese, Malick, Mann, and Coppola in the same year. Oh well.
Byyyeeee ‘Tree of Life’.
Look forward to you next year.
Now my predictions lists can clear up, a bit.
*sigh*
I’m not terribly surprised, but I am glad the film is being given some time to marinate. I’ve only seen one Malick film so far (The Thin Red Line) and it struck me as the work of a true cinematic master-the ideas driving the film seemed so impeccably integrated within every aspect of it, and I’m positive that if Malik hadn’t had to cut out portions of I it would have been the unrivaled best film of 1998. Having said that, as sad as I am that I’ll have to wait a little longer to see it, I’m glad Tree of Life’s post-production is being handled thoughtfully and methodically, and I have full confidence that come next year we will be presented with a true masterpiece. I can’t f***in’ wait.
Maybe in the interim Cameron, you can actually watch the rest of Malick’s filmography.
Kris, just a heads-up: The link to Anne’s blog is invalid.
Also, this is a bit of a relief, what with the clusterfuck of films yet to premiere this year.
Oh crap. Thanks, James.
It’s all up to you now The Way Back!
=) You’re welcome.
And…wtf? Although I *am* extremely anticipating that movie. Perhaps between “The Way Back” and “Ondine”, an Oscar nod at last for Colin Farrell?
Gittes: That’s not opening until next year.
Well that sucks. I must have missed the news about it opening next year. Can it be 2010 already? Look what’s coming: Inception, The Way Back, Tree of Life, Shutter Island, Green Zone, Robin Hood, etc.
James D: I agree about Farrell, though I hear Jim Sturgess is the one to look out for in The Way Back.
Supposedly Sofia Coppola’s next film is out next year. So films I’m looking forward to: Rapunzel, Tree of Life, Potter 7, Somewhere. Romcoms in which I like the cast but I’ll see reviews to see how shlocky they are: When in Rome, Date Night, Valentine’s Day…sorta SATC 2 except I hated the first movie. Only Potter 7 is 1000% must-see though even if I still only really like one of the films.
Do we have any confirmation for The Way Back? Right now I’m thinking only of that movie that could make Ronan the first doubly-nommed actor born after the 70’s, if Lovely Bones doesn’t pan out.
Just to edge it out and make a T10 for next year: Burlesque starring Kristen Bell, Christina Aguilera, and Cher which could be a trainwreck and/or awesome; and maybe Your Highness because of the supporting cast though I don’t like Danny McBride.
Hm, you’re neglecting/omitting so many, J. For instance: “Ondine”, “Fish Tank”, hopefully “Mother and Child”.
And speaking of the cast of YH, don’t forget James Franco’s biopic, “Howl”, which I’m hoping will be a potential nom for the rising actor. Or at the very least be the launchpad for his next great role.
Hm, I have a not-so-secret desire to see “I Love You, Phillip Morris”–I’ve heard good things actually. Probably not Oscary, but some have said it’s enjoyable. Not every gay film needs to be awards-bait.
And….aside from “The Way Back” and “The Tree of Life”, I’m also looking forward to: “The Social Network”, “Rabbit Hole”, “Get Low”, “Shutter Island”, “The Special Relationship”, “Life During Wartime”, “Inception”, “Mary and Max” (sicne it doesn’t have a 2009 release date), “All Good Things”, “Crazy Heart”, “Within the Whirlwind”, “White Material”, “The Seagull” (if it is completed), “The Kids Are All Right”, “Brooklyn’s Finest”, “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”, “Never Let Me Go”, “Rapunzel”, “Chloe”, perhaps “Love and Other Drugs”, and I suppose “Alice in Wonderland”. And also, the American releases of “A Prophet” (though I already have a copy of it) and “Lebanon”.
Yeah, 2010 has a lot going for it, or so it seems….
Crap….Forgot “Green Zone”. And I didn’t include HP7a because I’m behind, but that as well.
I am aware there are a lot of movies a lot of others may want to watch, but I said films I personally want to watch. I don’t want to watch any of those you list as of now.
I never said you had to have the desire to watch them either. It was just a segue into my post.
Damn you, Malick.
Oh well. More to look forward to in 2010. I still don’t get the premise of this film.
Perhaps it’s gonna be the tentpole 3D film of 2010.
There’s a good chance it will debut at Cannes, before a fall release (like No Country for Old Men). If it’s not finished in time it could premiere later, though.
