James Cameron on ‘The Hurt Locker’

Written by

With the more gossipy factions of the press trying to conjure up tension between him and his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow, it’s great to see that James Cameron is having none of it.

In this extract from an interview with David Poland — worth checking out here — Cameron sings the praises of “The Hurt Locker,” suggesting it could emerge as the “Platoon” of the Iraq generation. He also makes clear that they continue to enjoy a professional friendship … so the wags hoping for some kind of bitter rivalry come Oscar season will be disappointed.

Nice to see Cameron be nice for a bit.

I honestly think he’s very proud/happy for her.

My opinion of ‘The Hurt Locker’:

    Ehh? Good? 7.5/10

Nice direction, great acting, very good editing, nice sound design.

But the story? The chronicling of days? I know that the point of the film is to show what goes on and what doesn’t go on and how much of it is lying in wait … waiting til the end.

But, wow, the pacing killed me. I looked at my watch, finally, out of desperation, and saw that there was 30 minutes left. I was thinking/hoping for 5.

Don’t know if I’ll see this again for a while. I RESPECT it, definitely. But it’s just not my type of movie.

From all the stories I hear about Cameron being an asshole seems to only really be when he’s filming on set. Otherwise it seems he’s a pretty decent guy.

Good to see there’s no bitter rivalry between the two, though. They were married, what, 18 years ago? They can surely move on with their lives after all this time.

I’m with John. By the last third the thing was dragging like crazy, at the risk of becoming quite dull and tiresome. It pulls itself up back in time for the end, but it just fails to sustain that much interest. Good flick though. Not great.

I imagine that Avatar and Hurt Locker are designed to appeal to different audiences. One is a tightly-wired dramatic thriller made for adults, the other is a festival of sci-fi gadgetry aimed at kids. So trying to pit Cameron against Bigelow simply because they are ex’s with a movie out in the “same year”, seems silly and sort of a double-standard. I mean, are bloggers going to solicit Linda Hamilton’s review of Avatar? And who really cares?…
